Microsoft’s August and September 2026 Teams updates cover background file uploads, larger breakout-room meetings, Call Queue recording controls, and several Copilot additions. The updates are documented across separate user-facing and administrator sources, so they should not be read as a single complete feature list or as proof that every tenant already has each feature.
What changed for everyday Teams users?
File uploads continue in the background
Microsoft’s September 2026 What’s New listing says users can keep working while a shared file uploads. The upload continues in the background in chats, channels, and meetings; a progress indicator shows its status, and the file appears in the conversation when it is ready. This describes how the upload behaves, not a guaranteed improvement in upload speed or reliability.
Copilot’s Teams experience gets a refreshed design
In its September 2026 Copilot roundup, Microsoft describes a refreshed Copilot experience in Teams and Outlook. The Teams design includes a full-screen experience and a side pane. The roundup describes the product changes, but does not establish that every user, platform, or tenant has received them.
What changed for meeting organizers?
Breakout rooms for meetings with up to 1,000 attendees
Microsoft’s Teams admin release notes list breakout rooms for meetings with up to 1,000 attendees in an entry dated September 9, 2026. Treat 1,000 as the stated maximum for this feature, not as a general meeting-capacity claim.

Meeting material can inform Copilot Notebooks
Microsoft’s Copilot release notes describe “Meetings as References” in Copilot Notebooks. Users can add Teams meeting transcripts, notes, chats, and shared content as notebook knowledge sources. This makes those materials available as references in the notebook; it does not mean every meeting is automatically added.
What should Teams administrators know?
Call Queue calls can be recorded and transcribed automatically
An August 26, 2026 entry in Microsoft’s Teams admin release notes describes automatic recording and transcription for calls answered through Teams Call Queues. Recordings are stored in SharePoint and can be accessed from call history in the Queues app. Administrators can manage recording settings and agent access in the Teams admin center or with PowerShell.

Microsoft’s notes state that the Queues app requires a Teams Premium license. The feature’s settings and access controls are therefore relevant both to the license configuration and to how the organization manages recordings.
Desk booking on Teams desk hub devices
The September 9 admin notes also list bookable desk support on Teams desk hub devices, naming Yealink Linkhub as an example. Microsoft says each device requires a Teams Shared Space license. Check the current tenant configuration and licensing documentation before planning a deployment.

What did Microsoft announce for Copilot and Teams Phone?
@Copilot can use shared team context
In a September 25, 2026 announcement, Jared Spataro, Microsoft’s Chief Marketing Officer, AI at Work, wrote: “And now when you invoke @Copilot in Teams, your entire team gets the shared context and permissions of the channel, group chat or meeting.” Read this as Microsoft’s description of shared context and permissions when @Copilot is invoked—not as a promise that Copilot can access content beyond the permissions of that space. Teams Phone Agent is described as an AI receptionist
Microsoft’s September Copilot roundup describes Teams Phone Agent as an AI-powered receptionist for organizations using Teams Phone. According to Microsoft, it can answer common questions, book or reschedule appointments, route callers to an employee or department, and provide an AI-generated conversation summary. Microsoft reports support for over 60 languages; that is a vendor-stated product capability, not an independent performance study.

How should readers interpret the rollout?
The September What’s New page is a user-facing feature listing, while the August details here come from administrator release notes and Copilot documentation. Together they cover several documented changes, not an exhaustive August–September changelog. A dated release-note entry or product announcement also does not establish that a feature is available to every tenant, region, platform, or license at once. For deployment decisions, check the current Teams admin center and the licensing documentation for the specific feature.
