It was a security-bulletin-related update for a device running Android 12L—not a new Android version upgrade. Microsoft says Surface Duo 2 has reached end of servicing and will receive no newer Android version or security updates.
What was the last Surface Duo 2 update?
Microsoft Support’s Surface Duo 2 update history lists the final release as follows:

The device’s update-history page does not enumerate how many vulnerabilities were fixed or provide a device-specific list of fixes. The release description identifies the Android Security Bulletin scenarios it addresses, so it should not be described as a new Android major-version upgrade.
Was it a new Android version upgrade?
No. Microsoft identifies the Android 12L operating-system upgrade in an earlier entry, dated October 24, 2022. That release, software version 2022.815.179, upgraded the operating system to Android 12L for foldable devices and also addressed an October 2022 Android Security Bulletin scenario.

Surface Duo 2 has two PixelSense Fusion displays and runs Android, according to Microsoft’s October 2021 product fact sheet. Android 12L was the operating-system upgrade named in the history; the October 2024 record is a later security-bulletin-related release for the Android 12L-era device.
A brief update timeline
- October 24, 2022 — Android 12L: Version 2022.815.179 upgraded the operating system to Android 12L for foldable devices.
- December 8, 2022 — maintenance update: Version 2022.819.57 addressed December 2022 Android Security Bulletin scenarios and a call-handling issue after the Android 12L upgrade.
- October 8, 2024 — final listed release: Version 2023.501.541 addressed scenarios outlined in the October 2024 Android Security Bulletin.
Is Surface Duo 2 still getting security updates?
No. Microsoft Support states: “This device has reached its end-of-servicing date based on the Surface Lifecycle for Android-based devices and will no longer receive newer Android version and security updates.” That means the October 2024 entry is the last release in Microsoft’s published update history; Microsoft says newer Android version and security updates will not follow.

How to check for the update
If you are checking whether the last listed update is available to install, Microsoft’s Update Surface Duo instructions give these steps:
- Connect the Surface Duo 2 to a trusted Wi-Fi network.
- Open Settings, then tap System > System update > Check for update.
- If an update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
- After installation, tap Restart now.
Microsoft says updates are staged, so not every device receives an update at the same time. It also says an installed software update cannot be uninstalled or reverted.
