For keeping two separate tasks visible, the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 is the more purpose-built multitasker. Its two physical displays are designed for side-by-side use. A Samsung Galaxy Z Fold is more versatile if you want to switch between one large continuous workspace and configurable split-screen or floating windows. For a current purchase, however, the Duo 2’s ended software support is a serious drawback.

“Galaxy Z Fold” covers multiple generations, and multitasking features vary by model. This comparison distinguishes family-level capabilities from features reported specifically for the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

How do their screens change multitasking?

Surface Duo 2: two distinct displays

Microsoft describes the Duo 2 as having two Dual PixelSense Fusion displays that provide 8.3 inches of combined workspace when open. A center hinge keeps the displays physically separate, making it natural to leave one task on each screen rather than arrange two windows on a single canvas. The 8.3-inch figure is a manufacturer specification, not an independent measure of productivity. Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 features page gives the display details.

Galaxy Z Fold: one continuous inner display

The Galaxy Z Fold’s main display is a continuous surface when unfolded. Samsung’s guidance covers using apps across the cover and main displays, and partially folding the device for compatible apps. That flexibility makes the Fold a better fit if you sometimes want one large workspace and sometimes want multiple apps visible. The exact options depend on the generation and app. Samsung’s foldable-phone support guidance explains these usage patterns.

How do they arrange multiple apps?

Surface Duo 2: pair two apps for a repeatable workflow

The Duo 2 supports app groups, which let you launch two frequently used apps together. Microsoft also identifies preinstalled apps with dual-screen enhancements or drag-and-drop capability, including Office, Outlook, Teams, OneNote, To Do, OneDrive, and Edge. Support and behavior vary by app, so check that the specific apps in your workflow handle the layout or drag-and-drop action you need. Microsoft’s Surface Duo usage guide describes app groups and dual-screen use.

This design is especially useful when you want two tasks to remain visibly separated—for example, keeping a document on one display while referring to a message or notes on the other. It is less compelling if your usual work depends on several movable windows or a single uninterrupted canvas.

Galaxy Z Fold: configurable layouts, with features varying by generation

Fold multitasking options depend on the specific model. A review of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 published September 30, 2026, reports that it can display up to three apps on screen and five floating windows. Those counts are specific to that review’s Fold 8 coverage; they should not be assumed for earlier Galaxy Z Fold models. Tom’s Guide’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 review provides that generation-specific report.

If you are comparing another Fold generation, confirm its supported split-screen and window options rather than relying on Fold 8 figures. Also consider whether your apps behave well in the layouts you plan to use: an app’s support for spanning, split-screen, or floating windows can matter as much as the phone’s hardware.

What does software support mean for a purchase today?

Microsoft says the Surface Duo 2 has reached its end-of-servicing date and will no longer receive newer Android versions or security updates. Microsoft’s update history lists October 8, 2024, as the date of its last posted update, addressing the October 2024 Android Security Bulletin. Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 update history documents its servicing status.

That makes the Duo 2 difficult to recommend as a primary device for a new purchase, even if its two-screen workflow is exactly what you want. Before choosing a Galaxy Z Fold, identify the generation and check its current official support status and availability in your region; support terms were not established for a particular Fold model here.

Which one should you choose?

Choose When it fits Trade-off to weigh
Surface Duo 2 You specifically want two separate displays and a dedicated paired-app workflow. It no longer receives newer Android versions or security updates from Microsoft.
A specified Galaxy Z Fold generation You want the option of a large continuous workspace as well as that generation’s supported split-screen or window layouts. Features vary by generation; verify the exact model, app behavior, support status, regional availability, price, and condition.

Verdict: The Duo 2 is the more focused choice for keeping two tasks independently visible, while a suitable, currently supported Galaxy Z Fold generation is the more flexible multitasking choice overall. The Duo 2’s end of servicing changes the practical buying decision: its distinctive layout is best suited to someone who knowingly accepts that support limitation, not someone seeking a well-supported new primary phone.
