Microsoft will end support for Office 2021 on October 13, 2026. There will be no extension and no extended security updates, but Microsoft has not announced that the apps will stop opening that day. They may continue to function; the key change is that Microsoft will stop providing security fixes, other updates, and technical support.
What happens to Office 2021 on October 13, 2026?
Office 2021 reaches the end of its support lifecycle on that date. Microsoft says it will not extend support or provide extended security updates. In Microsoft’s words, “All of your Office 2021 apps may continue to function. However, you could expose yourself to serious and potentially harmful security risks.” Microsoft’s Office 2021 support guidance distinguishes the end of servicing from an announced shutdown of the apps.
After the deadline, Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security fixes for vulnerabilities reported or discovered after support ends. Software updates, phone or chat support, and updates to support content also end. Microsoft lists the effects of the cutoff.
What should Office 2021 users do?
If you use Office at home
Choose whether to keep using the installed apps or move to a supported option. Office 2021 may still run after support ends, but it will no longer receive security fixes for newly reported or discovered vulnerabilities. Microsoft recommends moving to a newer Office version to stay current with features, patches, and security updates.

If your work or school manages Office
Contact your IT help desk before changing your installation or license. Microsoft directs organization-managed users to their IT team, which can advise on approved software, licensing, and deployment.
Office 2024 or Microsoft 365?
These are different licensing routes, not interchangeable names for the same offer. Microsoft describes one-time-purchase Office suites and Microsoft 365 as follows:

Support dates are another point to compare. Microsoft’s product-support listing gives Office 2021 an end-of-support date of October 13, 2026, and Office 2024 for PC and Mac a date of October 9, 2029. These are Microsoft’s stated lifecycle dates, not a guarantee that every edition or installation has identical terms. Check Microsoft’s product support listing when choosing a version.

Publisher is a related but distinct case. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 subscribers will no longer be able to access Publisher after October 1, 2026, while support for the perpetual Publisher version ends October 13, 2026. Microsoft recommends converting Publisher files before the subscription access change. See Microsoft’s Publisher retirement guidance. This Publisher change does not mean Office 2021 apps are all scheduled to stop functioning on October 13.
