Microsoft released KB5015814 on July 12, 2022, for the original release of Windows 11. It upgrades systems to OS Build 22000.795, incorporates improvements from the June 23 preview update KB5014668, and addresses Windows security issues. It also fixes a specific PowerShell transcript problem in which redirected command output could leave transcript logs empty.

What KB5015814 is

KB5015814 is a cumulative quality and security update for Windows 11 version 21H2, the operating system’s original release. After installation, the build number is 22000.795. Microsoft released it on July 12, 2022, and included the non-security improvements previously delivered in KB5014668 on June 23, 2022.

This is a historical release rather than a current Windows 11 update. Its details apply specifically to the original Windows 11 release and should not be assumed to describe later Windows versions.

PowerShell transcript logging fix

Microsoft describes the main PowerShell correction this way: “Addresses an issue that redirects the PowerShell command output so that transcript logs do not contain any content.”

PowerShell transcription records commands and output for administrative or auditing purposes. With the affected behavior, redirected output could result in a transcript containing no content. Microsoft also notes that, when PowerShell logging is enabled, transcript logs might contain decrypted passwords; in the issue it describes, those decrypted passwords were lost from the transcript. The change should therefore be understood as a fix for missing transcript content, not as a general redesign of PowerShell logging or a new security feature covering every logging scenario.

Security significance

Microsoft classifies KB5015814 as a security update addressing Windows security issues. Microsoft’s July 2022 Security Response Center summary lists Windows 11’s maximum severity for that month’s updates as Critical, with remote code execution as the greatest impact.

That monthly classification is broader than this individual KB entry: it summarizes the July 2022 Windows 11 update set and does not, by itself, identify a specific CVE list or severity assignment exclusively attributable to KB5015814. Microsoft’s KB notes do not establish a reliable CVE count for this package, so informal counts should not be treated as an official total.

How Microsoft distributed the update

  • Windows Update: Consumer devices could receive it through the normal update service, subject to the device’s update settings and eligibility.
  • Windows Update for Business: Organizations could deploy it according to configured servicing policies and deferral rules.
  • Microsoft Update Catalog: Administrators could download a standalone package.
  • WSUS: Managed environments could synchronize and approve the update through Windows Server Update Services.

KB5015814 known issues

.NET Framework 3.5 applications

Some applications that depend on .NET Framework 3.5 might fail to open when they use certain optional components. Microsoft’s release-note rendering does not identify those components, so the issue should not be narrowed to a particular feature without checking the complete Microsoft article.

Start menu may not open

On a small number of devices, clicking the Start button or pressing the Windows key could fail to open the Start menu. Microsoft later listed this problem as addressed by KB5016629. For systems still running an earlier affected update, Microsoft’s notes describe Known Issue Rollback guidance; managed devices require the corresponding policy configuration.

XPS Viewer and non-English documents

XPS Viewer might fail to open XPS documents that use some non-English languages or character encodings, including Japanese and Chinese.

Installing KB5015814 safely

  1. Confirm that the device is running the original Windows 11 release and note the current build in Settings > System > About.
  2. Save work and ensure the computer can restart. Cumulative updates can require a reboot.
  3. Use Settings > Windows Update for a consumer installation, or use your organization’s Windows Update for Business or WSUS policy.
  4. For offline or controlled deployment, obtain the package from the Microsoft Update Catalog and validate that it matches the target Windows 11 release.
  5. After restarting, check Settings > System > About and verify that the OS build is 22000.795.

How to investigate problems after installation

  • If the Start menu is unresponsive, test both the Start button and the Windows key, then check whether the device has received the later fix in KB5016629.
  • If a .NET Framework 3.5 application will not launch, record the application’s required optional components before changing Windows features; Microsoft’s abbreviated release notes do not identify the exact component combination.
  • If XPS documents fail only when they use particular languages or encodings, test a document using a supported encoding to isolate the XPS Viewer condition.
  • If PowerShell transcripts are empty, reproduce the command with transcription and redirection settings documented by your organization, because the KB addresses a specific redirected-output failure rather than every transcript configuration.

How to uninstall KB5015814

Microsoft’s notes warn that this release uses a combined servicing stack update (SSU) and latest cumulative update (LCU) package. For that combined package, wusa.exe /uninstall does not work. Microsoft documents removing the LCU package with DISM and states that the SSU cannot be removed.

Because package identity and removal behavior depend on the installed servicing state, verify the exact package on the computer and consult current Microsoft servicing guidance before using DISM. Removing a security update can leave the system exposed and may not resolve a problem that belongs to one of the separately documented known issues.

What this update does—and does not—promise

Area Established by Microsoft’s notes What not to infer
PowerShell Fixes redirected output that produced empty transcript logs. It is not a universal PowerShell logging or password-protection change.
Security Addresses Windows security issues; July 2022 Windows 11 updates had a Critical maximum severity and remote-code-execution greatest impact in Microsoft’s monthly summary. The summary is not a KB-specific CVE count or attribution.
Compatibility Documents .NET Framework 3.5, Start menu, and XPS Viewer problems for some systems. Every Windows 11 installation will experience these issues.

The Bottom Line

KB5015814 moved the original Windows 11 release to build 22000.795 on July 12, 2022. Its notable fixes include the empty PowerShell transcript issue and Windows security corrections, while a small set of .NET, Start menu, and XPS Viewer problems required separate troubleshooting or later servicing.
