Microsoft stopped selling and renting new movies and TV shows through Microsoft.com, the Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox on July 18, 2025. If you bought titles before the shutdown, Microsoft says you can still watch them in its Movies & TV app on Xbox or Windows. Windows downloads remain available in HD maximum resolution.

Can you still watch movies and shows you bought?
Yes. Microsoft says previously purchased titles remain playable in the Movies & TV app on Xbox and Windows. On Windows, playback remains available both online and from downloaded copies; Microsoft specifies HD as the maximum resolution for downloads. Xbox users can also continue playing personal videos.
Can you transfer your Microsoft purchases or get a refund?
Transfers
Microsoft says purchased movies and shows cannot be directly moved to another service. That means your Microsoft purchase does not become a purchase in an account at another video store.

Where can you buy or rent movies on Xbox and Windows now?
Microsoft points customers to Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home for current home-entertainment releases on Xbox and Windows. Availability and features vary by service and region, so check each service for whether a specific title can be rented or purchased, which devices are supported, whether downloads are available, and the terms that apply to access.

Some eligible U.S. customers may be able to sync certain purchased movies through Movies Anywhere with participating services. This is not a transfer of every Microsoft purchase: eligibility depends on the title, studio, and region. See Tom’s Guide’s report for that qualification.
