“Phoenix” is a reported codename for a possible Microsoft Edge visual refresh, not an officially announced Edge product or feature. The closest cited report, published by Windows Central in January 2026, described experimental Canary and Dev builds with a redesigned interface influenced by Microsoft’s Copilot visual language. Microsoft’s announcements do not call that work Phoenix. What you can try is Edge’s Copilot experience: Microsoft announced Copilot Mode as an opt-in experiment in July 2025, then said in May 2026 that Copilot capabilities were being integrated into the regular Edge experience.
What does “Phoenix” mean for Microsoft Edge?
Phoenix is a community or reported codename associated with a planned Edge visual refresh. It is not an official product name confirmed in the cited Microsoft announcements. The January 2026 Windows Central report is the closest cited evidence: it described experimental Canary and Dev builds with a redesigned interface influenced by Copilot’s visual language.
That distinction matters. A report about experimental builds is not the same as a Microsoft announcement that a named Phoenix update is shipping, nor does it establish that every Edge user can enable the redesign. There is no confirmed Phoenix-specific switch to turn on.
Which Edge feature can you try now?
Copilot Mode was the opt-in experiment
On July 28, 2025, Microsoft launched Copilot Mode as an experimental, fully opt-in feature. Microsoft described it as a step toward making Edge a browsing collaborator: Copilot could use page context to help people work through web research. Microsoft Edge corporate vice president Sean Lyndersay said, “This is why today we’re excited to launch Copilot Mode, a new experimental mode in Microsoft Edge, and our next step towards building a more powerful way to pilot the web.”

Copilot capabilities are moving into regular Edge
In a May 13, 2026 update, Microsoft said Copilot capabilities were available directly in Edge on desktop and, for the first time, in its mobile app. The update listed reasoning across multiple open tabs, answers informed by browsing history and past chats when those options are enabled, Voice and Vision for hands-free browsing, a redesigned new-tab page, and Journeys. Microsoft also said it was retiring the separate Copilot Mode label and distributing its capabilities through the normal Edge experience.
That means the practical feature to look for is Copilot in Edge, not a Phoenix toggle. Availability may differ by platform, account, region, and staged rollout, so a feature described by Microsoft may not yet appear for every user.

How to look for Copilot in Edge
- Update the browser. In Edge, open Settings and more > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge. Check for an update and let Edge install it if one is available.
- Open related pages. Keep several tabs on the same subject if you want to try asking Copilot to compare information across them.
- Look for Copilot or the updated new-tab experience. The interface and availability can vary, and the separate Copilot Mode label may no longer be present as Microsoft integrates its capabilities into Edge.
- Try a specific task. Ask Copilot to compare the open tabs, summarize important details, or help plan a task based on the pages you have open.
- Review personalization choices. Before enabling answers informed by browsing history or past chats, check the relevant privacy and personalization settings and decide whether that context suits you.
If Copilot or a particular capability is missing, check whether Edge has updated and whether the feature has reached your platform, account, or region. Do not expect a Phoenix setting: no Phoenix-specific switch is established.
Stable versus Canary and Dev: which channel should you use?
The channel choice is a trade-off between a steadier browser and earlier access to experimental changes. The January 2026 report described the interface work in Canary and Dev; it does not establish that the same design is in Stable or available to all users.

| Edge channel | What it is useful for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stable | The regular release intended for everyday browsing; use current Stable release notes to check what has shipped. | Experimental interface changes may arrive later than in preview builds. |
| Canary | Trying changes that may appear earlier in preview builds. | Experimental features can change or disappear; availability is not guaranteed. |
| Dev | Trying preview changes before relying on them in Stable. | As with Canary, early access can mean less predictability and no guarantee a reported design will ship. |
Microsoft announced that Edge Stable would move to a two-week major-release cycle beginning with Edge 152 on August 27, 2026. Extended Stable remains on an eight-week feature-update rhythm, intended for organizations that prefer a slower planning cadence. Because releases and feature availability change, consult the current Stable-channel release notes for the exact version and what it includes.

Copilot features and privacy choices
The Copilot capabilities Microsoft listed do not all use the same context. Comparing open tabs draws on pages you have open; answers informed by browsing history or past chats depend on those options being enabled. Voice and Vision provide hands-free interaction, while Journeys and the redesigned new-tab page are other parts of the announced Edge experience. Check the controls for each kind of personalization rather than assuming every Copilot interaction uses the same data.

Extensions are also changing
Microsoft reported that 95% of the top Manifest V2 extensions on the Edge Add-ons website had moved to Manifest V3. Microsoft said consumer migration away from Manifest V2 would begin in August 2026, with the consumer transition targeted for completion by the end of 2026 and enterprise deprecation following in early 2027. If an extension is important to your workflow, check its current Edge Add-ons listing and the publisher’s migration information before changing browser channels or relying on it during the transition.
