SecurityWeek’s July 5, 2024, roundup covered several separate cybersecurity stories: Microsoft’s disclosure of two vulnerabilities in Rockwell Automation PanelView Plus industrial interfaces, researchers’ findings about a Wi-Fi-connected Traeger grill, and distinct developments involving CapraRAT and Predator spyware. The industrial flaws presented the most immediate operational concern; the other reports raised questions about connected-device security and how confidently spyware activity can be tracked.

What Microsoft disclosed about PanelView Plus

Microsoft reported two remotely exploitable, unauthenticated vulnerabilities in Rockwell Automation PanelView Plus human-machine interfaces (HMIs), the terminals operators use to monitor or interact with industrial systems. Microsoft said it disclosed the issues to Rockwell through coordinated vulnerability disclosure in May and July 2023. Rockwell issued advisories and patches in September and October 2023.

Microsoft described one flaw as remote code execution (RCE), and the other as a denial-of-service issue. The CVSS scores below are severity ratings reported by Microsoft in 2024; they do not indicate how often attacks occurred.

Vulnerability Reported impact CVSS severity Technical detail
CVE-2023-2071 Remote code execution 9.8, reported by Microsoft in 2024 Microsoft described a technique using custom Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) classes to upload and load a malicious DLL.
CVE-2023-29464 Denial of service; the NVD record also describes potential information disclosure 8.2, reported by Microsoft in 2024 Microsoft characterized it as a denial-of-service flaw involving an out-of-bounds read. The NVD says crafted packets could disclose memory data and, if large enough, make FactoryTalk Linx communications over CIP unresponsive.

How the RCE technique worked

Microsoft’s technical account described combining capabilities exposed through custom CIP classes: one allowed file operations, while another could load a DLL and call a function. In the demonstrated attack path, those capabilities could be used to upload and execute a malicious DLL. This was a disclosed technique, not evidence that attackers had used it in real-world incidents.

Which software versions Microsoft identified

Microsoft identified FactoryTalk View ME versions 12 and 13, and FactoryTalk Linx versions 6.20 and 6.30 on PanelView Plus, in its disclosure. The cited account does not map each listed version to a specific CVE. For remediation, check Rockwell Automation’s current advisories against the exact PanelView Plus model and installed software version rather than assuming that every device or release is affected in the same way.

How to reduce risk to an industrial HMI

Microsoft recommended applying the relevant patches and limiting network exposure. Because HMIs can be connected to operational technology, changes should be planned with the people responsible for safe plant operation; an internet-facing fix should not disrupt a process or bypass change-control requirements.

  1. Identify the exact installation. Record the PanelView Plus device and the FactoryTalk View ME and FactoryTalk Linx versions in use. Compare them with the affected versions in Rockwell Automation’s current advisory.
  2. Apply the applicable vendor patches. Follow Rockwell’s instructions for the specific product and version, including any operational precautions. Microsoft’s Threat Intelligence team wrote on July 2, 2024: “We highly recommend PanelView Plus customers to apply these security patches.”
  3. Remove unnecessary internet exposure. Microsoft recommended disconnecting critical devices—including PLCs, routers, and PCs—from the internet and segmenting them from networks that do not need access.
  4. Restrict CIP access. Allow communication with CIP devices only from authorized components, using network controls appropriate to the site’s architecture.

What researchers reported about a connected Traeger grill

SecurityWeek reported that Bishop Fox researchers found vulnerabilities in a Wi-Fi-connected Traeger grill that could let someone control other users’ grills, including changing the temperature during a cooking cycle. That could affect a user’s control of a cooking process, but the cited roundup did not report a number of affected grills or confirmed compromises.

The roundup did not identify a specific model. It therefore does not establish that every Wi-Fi-enabled Traeger, or any current model, has the same vulnerability or behavior. It also does not establish whether the issue remains unpatched. Treat the finding as a reported security issue in the product context examined by the researchers, not as a claim about all connected grills today.

What the roundup said about CapraRAT and Predator

The spyware items were separate reports, not evidence of one campaign. SecurityWeek summarized SentinelOne’s updated findings about CapraRAT and separately relayed Cyberscoop reporting about apparent changes in Intellexa-associated Predator activity.

CapraRAT: reported targeting through curated apps

SecurityWeek said SentinelOne reported CapraRAT, an Android spyware previously associated with the Pakistan-linked Transparent Tribe threat group, embedded in curated video-browsing applications. The reported target audiences had broadened to include mobile gamers, weapons enthusiasts, and TikTok fans. These audience details describe the activity summarized in the July 2024 roundup; they are not a current assessment of CapraRAT’s distribution or targets.

Predator: an apparent decline with another possible explanation

SecurityWeek’s summary of Cyberscoop reporting said Intellexa-associated Predator activity appeared to decline after sanctions and public exposure of operations. Researchers cautioned that the apparent drop could also reflect the spyware maker finding ways to avoid detection. A decline in visible activity, on its own, does not show that Predator disappeared.

How to read these reports in context

  • The HMI vulnerabilities had a defined vendor remediation path. Microsoft identified affected product versions and said Rockwell had issued patches in 2023. Current installations still need to be checked against current vendor guidance.
  • The grill report was a researcher finding, not a broad product-status statement. The roundup supplied no model-specific scope or evidence about current firmware.
  • The spyware trend claim was explicitly uncertain. The reported decrease in Predator activity could indicate reduced activity or reduced visibility; the cited account did not resolve which explanation was correct.

All four briefs are historical reporting from July 2024. Later patch releases, product changes, campaign activity, or sanctions may alter the present-day picture.
