The mobile experience added chat, cited answers, voice input and response-style choices; Skype let a group ask Bing a question together. Microsoft later renamed Bing Chat as Copilot, and Skype retired in May 2025.
What arrived on iOS and Android
Microsoft’s February 22, 2023 announcement described a new Bing mobile app for iOS and Android, with preview access for people approved to try the new Bing. Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, called it “a fresh look and experience.”
In the Bing app, tapping the Bing icon at the bottom opened a chat session. Users could ask follow-up questions and receive answers with citations, choose how a response was presented—such as bullets, prose or a simplified version—and use voice input. Microsoft said voice was one of the preview community’s most-requested features.
Approved preview users could also reach Bing through the homepage in the Edge mobile app. The launch announcement framed mobile access as a way to bring the same chat experience to phones; its statement that 64% of searches occur on mobile phones was Microsoft’s rationale for the release, not a universal measure for every market or period. How Bing worked in Skype group chats
Skype users could add Bing to a group as they would another contact. Anyone in that group could then ask a question for the group and receive Bing’s answer in the shared conversation. Microsoft described possible uses including looking up travel information, weather, events, news and entertainment.
The interaction was designed for group questions rather than a private one-to-one chat: members could see the same response and use it in the conversation. Microsoft announced the feature as a worldwide preview on February 22, 2023, subject to preview access. It is a historical feature, not evidence that Bing remains available in Skype today.

Who could use the preview, and what Microsoft reported
The mobile app and Skype integration were presented as preview features, not as a generally available launch. Microsoft’s announcement reported more than one million people in 169 countries had joined the new Bing preview. It also said 71% of testers gave the new search and answers capabilities a thumbs-up. Those figures describe Microsoft’s launch reporting; they are not independent measurements of accuracy or satisfaction across all users.
From Bing Chat to Copilot
The 2023 mobile and Skype experiences were part of the new Bing preview, commonly called Bing Chat. On December 1, 2023, Microsoft announced that Microsoft Copilot—“formerly Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise”—was generally available. Microsoft described Copilot as AI-powered web chat with cited sources. The product name therefore changed after the preview: use Bing Chat for the 2023 launch and Copilot for the later product. Is Bing in Skype still available?
Microsoft Support says Skype retired in May 2025 and directs users to Teams Free. In light of that retirement, the 2023 Bing-in-Skype group-chat preview should be treated as discontinued historical functionality; the retirement notice does not establish that the integration moved to Teams. Microsoft Support: Skype is retiring.
