That makes the code open source; it does not make the old application a current Microsoft product or guarantee that it will build or run on a modern computer. Microsoft’s repository is archived and read-only, and warns that the project is unlikely to build successfully with modern hardware or software.
What Microsoft released
Microsoft published the original source code for 3D Movie Maker, a 1995 program, under the MIT License. The official Microsoft repository identifies the project as archived and read-only. Its code is released as-is, and Microsoft labels the software unsupported.
The repository says Microsoft restored the code from corporate archives and cleared it for release. The publication is not a complete collection of every related development or product component: alternate builds and products from the archive CDs were excluded, and some developer names and aliases were removed, except for consenting current Microsoft employees.
The source includes a 1995 build of Argonaut’s BRender engine; the repository says former Argonaut CEO Jez San approved releasing BRender under MIT. It does not include the 1992 SoftImage SDK in ./DKIT. So the release is valuable historical source, but it should not be mistaken for a turnkey package containing every dependency.

What 3D Movie Maker did
3D Movie Maker was a creativity program designed for children. In the 3DMMForever community project’s description, users create short animated movies with supplied scenes, 3D models, sound effects, and music. They place and animate characters using mouse movements and drags, record or import sound, then save and share their movies. The program also included an explorable “kidspace” theater with tutorials and ideas.
That description comes from a community project README that preserves historical information, rather than a current Microsoft product page. The key point is that 3D Movie Maker was a child-oriented movie-making environment, not a general-purpose modern 3D animation suite.

Can you build or run it today?
Microsoft’s original instructions rely on period-specific tools, including Visual C++ 2.0 development tools from the installer disk. They also describe using a short checkout path, font files, setvars.bat, and nmake. The repository cautions that modern compilers may reject conventions that predate C++98 and explicitly says the project is unlikely to build successfully under modern hardware or software.
Those are the repository’s instructions, not evidence that the original code has been independently built or tested on a current Windows release. A reader seeking historical source can inspect the official archive, but should expect setup and compatibility work rather than a supported installation experience.

Official source versus the community modernization fork
| Route | Ownership and status | Documented build path | Scope and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft source | Microsoft’s archived, read-only repository; the software is unsupported. | Historical Visual C++ 2.0 tools, plus repository-specific setup including a short path, font files, setvars.bat, and nmake. |
Original source released under MIT. Microsoft warns it is unlikely to build with modern hardware or software; the SoftImage SDK is omitted. |
| 3DMMForever | Community modernization project, separate from Microsoft’s archive. | Its README lists CMake 3.23 and Visual Studio 2022, targeting x86; when configured, its CMake build should produce 3dmovie.exe. |
The README notes that install setup is not yet correct, files do not display correctly in Visual Studio, and compiling SITOBREN.EXE is disabled because it needs the omitted SoftImage SDK. These are project-documented limitations, not a compatibility guarantee. |
3DMMForever’s stated goals include building with modern open-source tools, adding macOS and Linux support, preserving compatibility with original movie files, and keeping enhancements light. Its README also describes 3DMMPlus ambitions as future plans; those should not be read as completed features.
Choose the Microsoft archive if your aim is to examine the released historical code. The community fork is the more relevant starting point if you want to investigate a modernized build route, but its own documentation describes limitations and does not make it a Microsoft-supported release.

Why the source release matters
The repository includes an anecdote attributed to Jez San, former CEO of Argonaut Software, about BRender’s design process:
“When Sam Littlewood designed BRender, he didn’t write the code. And then document it.
The way most things were built at the time.
First, he wrote the manual. The full documentation
That served as the spec. Then the coding started.”Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
