For ordinary desktop document editing, LibreOffice is usually the better fit for an HP Stream if the laptop allows you to install it. Its published Windows installer requirements are lighter than Microsoft 365’s. If your Stream is still in Windows S mode, start with Microsoft 365’s free web apps instead: installing a non-Store desktop app requires leaving S mode, and Microsoft says that change is permanent.
Choose Microsoft 365 desktop apps when your work depends on Microsoft-specific features, close workflow compatibility, or Microsoft cloud services—and only after checking your exact Stream model and available disk space. HP Stream configurations differ, and published minimum requirements are not performance tests.
Which is better on an HP Stream: Microsoft 365 or LibreOffice?
For local editing of everyday documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, LibreOffice is the better starting point when desktop installation is possible. The Document Foundation lists up to 1.5 GB of available disk space for its Windows installer, compared with Microsoft’s 4 GB available-disk-space requirement for Microsoft 365 consumer desktop apps. Those figures are installation requirements, not evidence that LibreOffice runs faster on a particular Stream.
Microsoft 365 is the stronger choice if you depend on Microsoft-specific desktop workflows or its cloud services. Its larger listed storage requirement makes it especially important to check free space first on a low-capacity laptop. For browser-based editing or a Stream that remains in S mode, Microsoft’s web apps may avoid the need to install a desktop suite.

Which office suite uses less storage?
The published desktop-install requirements favor LibreOffice: The Document Foundation lists up to 1.5 GB of available disk space, while Microsoft lists 4 GB of available disk space for Microsoft 365 consumer desktop apps. LibreOffice’s stated Windows requirement is 256 MB RAM, with 512 MB recommended; Microsoft lists 4 GB RAM. These numbers are publisher requirements, not a head-to-head benchmark or a guarantee about how either program will feel on your laptop.
Available space is not the same as drive capacity. HP lists one example, the Stream 11-ak0053dx, with 64 GB eMMC storage and 4 GB onboard RAM. Windows, updates, personal files, and other apps already use part of that drive. Check free space in File Explorer or in Windows Settings before installing anything; do not assume every HP Stream has the same hardware. HP Stream Laptop 11-ak0053dx specifications.
Microsoft’s 64 GB minimum for a Windows 11 storage device is a Windows requirement, not space reserved for Office. A 64 GB drive therefore does not mean that 4 GB is free for Microsoft 365. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.
Can I install LibreOffice on an HP Stream in S mode?
Not through the normal downloaded desktop installer while S mode remains on. Microsoft says Windows in S mode runs only compatible apps from Microsoft Store. The Document Foundation’s Windows requirements page provides the desktop installer and lists administrator rights as a requirement, so check whether a suitable Store version is available for your exact laptop before considering a switch.

If the app you need is not available through the Store, Microsoft documents switching out of S mode in Windows’ Activation settings. Microsoft Support states, “There’s no charge to switch out of S mode, but you won’t be able to turn it back on.” Treat that as a one-way change, not a reversible installation setting. Can I use Microsoft Office for free on an HP Stream?
Microsoft offers free browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint through Microsoft 365 for the web. They are an option when you want to avoid installing desktop apps, including on a Stream that remains in S mode. Microsoft’s cited US page says files must be saved in and shared from OneDrive, and lists 5 GB of free OneDrive storage. Will Microsoft 365 fit on a 64 GB HP Stream?
Capacity alone cannot answer that. Microsoft lists 4 GB of available disk space and 4 GB RAM as Windows requirements for Microsoft 365 for home, but a particular Stream’s remaining free space depends on Windows, updates, files, and installed software. The HP Stream 11-ak0053dx is one model listed with a 64 GB eMMC drive; it is not a specification for every Stream. Check the product number and the actual free space on your laptop before installation.
Also check whether the exact device meets Windows 11 requirements rather than inferring eligibility from its name. Microsoft lists, among other minimums, a 64 GB or larger storage device, 4 GB RAM, an approved processor, Secure Boot-capable UEFI, and TPM 2.0. These are Windows requirements, separate from the office-suite requirements.

Can LibreOffice open Word and Excel files?
Do not assume perfect interchangeability for every file. The official product pages cited here do not establish a guarantee covering all Office formats and features. If school or work depends on exact layout or behavior, open representative files in LibreOffice before switching—especially macro-enabled workbooks, complex spreadsheets, and documents with elaborate formatting or templates. Keep Microsoft 365 available if a critical file does not behave as required.
