Choose Microsoft 365 Personal if one person needs the subscription. Choose Family if two or more people need their own access and OneDrive storage: it covers up to six people, each with 1 TB. At Microsoft’s listed US annual prices, Family costs $129.99 a year, compared with $199.98 for two separate Personal plans. One important limit: Family’s included AI benefits belong to the subscription owner and aren’t shared with other members.
Microsoft 365 Personal vs Family: the key differences
The figures below are from Microsoft’s US plan comparison page, accessed in 2026. Prices are US list prices, not global rates; taxes, discounts, and future price changes may affect what you pay. Microsoft says subscriptions automatically renew at the regular price and selected term unless cancelled, so check the terms at checkout. Microsoft 365 plan comparison.
| Plan detail | Microsoft 365 Personal | Microsoft 365 Family |
|---|---|---|
| Listed price | $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year | $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year |
| People covered | One person | One to six people: the owner and up to five additional people |
| OneDrive storage | 1 TB for the subscriber | 1 TB per person, up to 6 TB total |
| Simultaneous app and device use | Sign in on up to five devices at once | Each person can sign in on up to five devices at once |
| Sharing | Subscription benefits aren’t shared with other people | The owner can share with up to five additional people in the owner’s Microsoft family group |
| Included AI benefits | Available to the subscriber under the plan terms | Available to the subscription owner only; additional members don’t receive the owner’s AI benefits |
When Microsoft 365 Personal is the better choice
Personal is the straightforward option when only one person needs Microsoft 365. At the listed US annual price, it costs $99.99 and gives that subscriber 1 TB of storage and use on up to five devices at once. Paying for Family adds no additional user coverage if nobody else will use the subscription.
Personal also avoids relying on family-group sharing. If a second person later needs their own account, storage, and apps, compare the cost of upgrading to Family with buying another Personal subscription.

When Microsoft 365 Family is worth the extra cost
Family makes sense when at least two people want their own Microsoft 365 access and individual storage allocations. At Microsoft’s listed US annual prices, Family is $30 more than one Personal plan, while two separate Personal plans total $199.98 per year. That makes Family $69.99 less per year than two Personal plans at those list prices. This is arithmetic based on Microsoft’s published prices, before taxes or discounts.
The monthly list-price difference is $3: $12.99 for Family versus $9.99 for Personal. If more than one person will use the subscription, compare that extra monthly cost with the price of separate subscriptions.

Family is not a single shared login or a pooled 6 TB drive. Microsoft says each person has a separate sign-in and 1 TB allocation, and the owner may share with a maximum of five additional people. See Microsoft’s instructions for sharing a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Check family-group eligibility before choosing Family
People you invite must join the subscription owner’s Microsoft family group to receive shared benefits. Someone who already belongs to another Microsoft family group may need to leave it before accepting the invitation. If an intended user cannot or does not want to join the owner’s group, don’t assume Family sharing will work for them; check Microsoft’s sharing requirements first.

Family does not share the owner’s AI benefits
Do not choose Family on the assumption that every member will receive the subscription owner’s included AI features. Microsoft Support says AI features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Designer included with Microsoft 365 Family and Premium are available only to the subscription owner and cannot be shared. The other Family members may still receive other shared plan benefits, but they do not inherit the owner’s subscription AI access. Microsoft Support’s explanation of AI benefits.
Specific AI features and usage limits can change. Check Microsoft’s current plan terms and AI limits before subscribing if those features are central to your decision; don’t rely on a fixed number of prompts or uses without verifying the current limits.

- Other members specifically need the owner’s included AI benefits: Family does not provide those benefits to additional members.
- An invitee is outside the owner’s Microsoft family group: confirm they can join before counting them as a covered user.
