The September 2025 announcement introduced two approaches: work with Copilot inside Word or Excel, or ask for Office files in Copilot chat. Microsoft’s current documentation uses updated names, including Editing with Copilot and Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Agents, and access depends on whether you have an eligible consumer plan or a properly configured business license.
What does “vibe working” mean?
Microsoft announced “vibe working” on September 29, 2025. The idea is to begin with a prompt, guide Copilot through follow-up instructions, and shape an Office artifact through an iterative exchange. It is a product description for a way of working, not a separate Microsoft 365 subscription or a guarantee of a particular result.
In the launch announcement, Microsoft executive Sumit Chauhan described the intended workflow as starting “with a simple prompt” and then steering Copilot as it handles multi-step tasks. That is Microsoft’s characterization of the feature, not an independent performance finding. The announcement mentioned SpreadsheetBench as an evaluation context but did not report a result figure, so it does not establish a benchmark score or ranking.
How the two workflows differed at launch
| Workflow | Where you start | What Microsoft described at launch |
|---|---|---|
| Agent Mode | Inside Word or Excel | Prompt Copilot in the Office app, then steer it as it generates, evaluates, and refines work. Excel was the detailed example, including spreadsheet creation and checking; Word Agent Mode began rolling out in the same announcement. |
| Office Agent | In Copilot chat | Generate Office artifacts from the conversation. Microsoft described Word documents and PowerPoint presentations as available at launch, with Excel support forthcoming. |
The launch-era access details are historical, not a description of current availability. At the time, Microsoft said Office Agent was initially rolling out to Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium subscribers in the United States using Copilot on the web in English.

What Microsoft calls the features now
Microsoft’s later documentation updates the terminology. The editing capability previously marketed as “Agent Mode” is now referred to as Editing with Copilot for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Microsoft Learn also describes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Agents in Microsoft Copilot. The older Agent Mode and Office Agent labels are useful for understanding the September 2025 announcement, but they are not the only names readers may see in current guidance.
The distinction remains useful: Editing with Copilot describes working on content in an Office app, while the agents in Copilot provide a chat-based route to Office work. Microsoft’s current product names and controls can change, so use the live Microsoft support or Learn page for the exact app experience available to your account.

Who can use Copilot’s Office agents?
Business and organizational accounts
Microsoft Learn describes the business Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Agents as premium features that require a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license. They appear in Copilot when the organization has Anthropic models enabled. An administrator can disable that connection; if so, the agents are hidden. A license alone may therefore not be enough: availability also depends on tenant configuration.
Personal and family accounts
Microsoft’s consumer-facing Editing with Copilot guidance covers eligible Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium plans. Eligibility and rollout still matter, so do not assume that every subscriber, region, or app version has the feature. Check Microsoft’s current support guidance for your account and app rather than relying on the narrower United States, web, and English rollout description from September 2025.

What happens to business files and organizational data?
For business agents, Microsoft says the agents use organizational content the user is permitted to access, respect relevant sensitivity labels and compliance policies, and save created files in the organization’s tenant. In practical terms, the agent does not grant access to material beyond the user’s permissions, and the output is stored within the organization’s environment rather than treated as a personal consumer file.
There is a regional qualification: Microsoft’s cited guidance notes that processing involving Anthropic models is outside the EU Data Boundary. That point is specific to the documented configuration and geography; organizations should consult Microsoft’s current documentation and administrator settings before drawing conclusions about a particular tenant’s data residency or compliance obligations.

How to decide which route fits your task
- Choose in-app editing when you are already working in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and want to shape the artifact where it lives.
- Choose a Copilot chat agent when you want to start with a conversation and have it produce an Office file, subject to the agents available to your account.
- For a work account, confirm access first: check that you have a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license and that your administrator has enabled the relevant Anthropic model connection.
- Review generated work: inspect calculations, wording, structure, and facts before using or sharing an artifact. Microsoft’s quality language describes intended product behavior, not a guarantee of accuracy.
