These choices replace different parts of Microsoft 365. A free personal editor may be enough for an individual, while a business that depends on shared storage, email, or administrator controls should compare complete business plans rather than editor apps alone.
What does Microsoft 365 cost compared with a one-time Office purchase?
Microsoft’s US consumer page displayed Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99 per year or $9.99 per month, Family at $129.99 per year, and Office Home 2024 at $179.99 as a one-time purchase when checked on October 4, 2026. These are regional, dated examples, not guaranteed current prices elsewhere. Check Microsoft’s plan comparison for current terms.
The subscription and one-time purchase are different bundles, not simply different ways to pay for identical service. Microsoft says its one-time Office suites are for a single PC or Mac and do not include some cloud-backed features or Microsoft 365 services such as OneDrive, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online. Free desktop editing: LibreOffice or ONLYOFFICE
LibreOffice
LibreOffice is a free, open-source desktop suite. Its core applications include Writer for documents, Calc for spreadsheets, and Impress for presentations. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it a strong fit when you want local desktop tools without a subscription or browser-centered workflow.
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is presented as a free desktop suite for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Its listed formats include DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. This is a desktop editing option; the free desktop product page does not tell you what hosted collaboration or team administration would cost.

Neither format support nor an application’s compatibility claim guarantees that every document will look or behave exactly as it did in Microsoft Office. Before committing, open your own important files and inspect page layout, fonts, spreadsheet formulas, macros, and presentation effects.
Browser collaboration: Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Google’s personal Docs, Sheets, and Slides offer a free path for editing, while Workspace is the paid business tier. The browser-centered workflow suits people who collaborate through Google Drive; the apps are separate on mobile. Do not assume a personal Google account includes the same services or administration features as a Workspace plan. Current Workspace pricing and entitlements should be checked on Google’s own plan pages; no exact price is established here.

Imported Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files can have formatting differences in Google’s tools. If collaborators exchange Office files, test representative documents and spreadsheets before moving a whole workflow.
Cross-device freemium option: WPS Office
WPS Office is offered as a free-to-start suite with paid tiers and lists desktop and mobile platforms. Its exact live regional pricing and free-tier limits are not established here, so check the current offer before relying on a specific feature. WPS describes its Microsoft-format compatibility on its suite alternatives page; treat that as a vendor claim, not a guarantee for every file.

How to check whether a replacement will handle your files
- Make a representative test set. Include an ordinary document, a document with unusual fonts or layout, a spreadsheet with formulas or macros, and a presentation with animations or special effects if you use them.
- Open copies in the candidate suite. Check that pages, tables, charts, formula results, and slide elements remain usable. Avoid using the only copy of an important file during migration.
- Round-trip the files. Save in the format you plan to exchange, reopen in the intended app, and verify the result. Pay particular attention to complex formulas, macros, fonts, and slide effects.
- Test collaboration and offline needs separately. Confirm whether your workflow requires simultaneous editing, cloud storage, browser access, or working without an internet connection; these capabilities vary by product and plan.
There is no universal fidelity result for all DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX files. The safest decision comes from testing the files and collaboration tasks you actually use.

What to compare before leaving Microsoft 365
- What is included for free: distinguish a personal editing tool or free desktop app from a paid business collaboration service.
- Where you work: confirm desktop, browser, and mobile availability for your devices. LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE are desktop choices; Google centers on a browser workflow; WPS lists desktop and mobile options.
- Offline editing: establish whether you can edit locally when disconnected, and whether that matches your chosen app and setup.
- Team services: price storage, co-editing, business email, and administrator controls if your organization depends on them.
- Billing and lifecycle: compare recurring subscriptions with one-time software purchases, and check how long your selected edition receives support. Microsoft states that Office suites receive five years of mainstream support after launch and that Office 2021 and later do not receive extended support; details are on its support page.
