The right LiteLLM alternative depends on what you are replacing. LiteLLM combines a common interface for many model providers with a Python SDK and a self-hosted, OpenAI-compatible gateway. If you need a different operating model, managed access to model catalogs, stronger enterprise governance, or deeper observability, another gateway may fit better. The current shortlist worth investigating includes Bifrost, Portkey, Kong AI Gateway, Agent Router, TrueFoundry, Cloudflare AI Gateway, Vercel AI Gateway, OpenRouter, Helicone, and Respan. None is a universal winner: compare hosting, credentials, routing and failover, governance, telemetry, migration effort, and commercial terms against your workload, then verify each vendor’s current documentation before committing.

Is there one best alternative to LiteLLM?

No. “Best” changes with the constraint that caused you to look beyond LiteLLM. A platform team that wants to run every component inside its own Kubernetes cluster has a different requirement from an application team that wants a hosted model catalog and one consolidated bill. An enterprise may care most about identity integration and audit records, while a small team may value a quick migration and low operational overhead.

Start by writing down the exact problem: gateway operations, provider access, routing quality, governance, debugging, or a combination. Then test candidates against production-shaped traffic rather than choosing from a feature list. Secondary comparisons currently mention ten products as alternatives, but those lists are shortlists for investigation, not independent rankings.

What does LiteLLM provide as the comparison baseline?

LiteLLM documents two related components. Its Python SDK gives an application a common calling pattern across model providers. Its self-hosted gateway exposes an OpenAI-compatible endpoint so teams can centralize provider connections instead of embedding a different client in every service.

  • Provider normalization: applications can use a consistent request and response shape while the gateway or SDK translates provider-specific APIs.
  • Routing: teams can direct requests among models or providers, including policies that use retries and fallbacks when a route fails.
  • Access controls: virtual keys, budgets, and rate limits are documented features for controlling who can call which route and how much they can consume.
  • Cost tracking: usage can be attributed so operators can inspect spend by key, model, or application.

Use that set as a checklist, not as a promise that every alternative replaces every layer. One product may replace only the proxy, another may bundle managed model access, and a third may primarily improve tracing or policy enforcement while leaving provider accounts in your hands.

Which LiteLLM alternatives should I investigate?

The following names appear in current secondary comparisons of LLM gateways and routing platforms. Their inclusion does not establish identical capabilities, current pricing, certifications, model counts, or performance. Treat each row as a starting point for primary-source verification.

Candidate Why it belongs on a shortlist Questions to verify before a proof of concept
Bifrost Named as an LLM gateway alternative in recent comparisons. Can it be self-hosted, and how are routing, credentials, logs, and upgrades operated?
Portkey Included among gateway and routing options. Which controls are available in your deployment model, and how are provider keys and usage charges handled?
Kong AI Gateway Relevant when an organization already evaluates API-gateway technology. What AI-specific routing, policy, and telemetry functions are included in the edition you would deploy?
Agent Router Listed as a routing-focused option. Does its routing model cover ordinary completion traffic as well as agent workloads, and what failover controls exist?
TrueFoundry Appears in comparisons spanning model operations and enterprise controls. Which components are hosted, which run in your environment, and how does it integrate with your identity and deployment stack?
Cloudflare AI Gateway Included as a managed gateway option in market comparisons. Where are requests processed, what data-retention settings apply, and which provider accounts can you attach?
Vercel AI Gateway Named for teams already using a web-application platform and its AI tooling. How are provider selection, quotas, logs, and non-platform workloads handled?
OpenRouter Included as a hosted model-access and routing service. Can you bring your own provider credentials, how is billing consolidated, and what controls exist for regulated traffic?
Helicone Appears in comparisons emphasizing observability around model calls. Does it provide the routing and fallback layer you need or mainly telemetry, and where are logs stored?
Respan Listed in the same alternative landscape. Which gateway, evaluation, and tracing features are available today, and what is the deployment boundary?

Vendor documentation should be the authority for current feature limits, license terms, regional availability, security attestations, and prices. A comparison article can identify candidates, but it cannot establish that a feature is still included in a particular plan.

Should I choose a self-hosted, managed, or hybrid gateway?

Hosting is the first major decision because it determines who runs the control plane and where request data travels. Decide this before comparing individual feature checkboxes.

Self-hosted gateway

You deploy the proxy in your own infrastructure and normally retain direct relationships with model providers. This approach offers the most control over network paths, secrets, upgrades, and data retention, but your team owns availability, scaling, patching, on-call response, and capacity planning. Confirm whether the candidate supplies a container image, Helm chart, infrastructure guidance, health checks, and a supported upgrade path rather than assuming that “open source” means production-ready operations.

Managed gateway

The vendor operates the routing service. You gain a shorter path to production and offload much of the gateway’s maintenance, but requests and telemetry cross a vendor-controlled boundary. Check processing regions, retention, deletion behavior, incident support, service-level commitments, and whether an outage leaves you with a usable fallback path. Clarify whether you supply your own provider keys or buy access through the service.

Hybrid deployment

A hybrid pattern keeps sensitive traffic or credentials in your environment while using a hosted control plane for policy, analytics, or selected routes. It can satisfy data-boundary requirements without recreating every management function, but it also introduces two systems to configure and troubleshoot. Map the exact path of prompts, completions, metadata, and logs for each route; “hybrid” is not a sufficient description for a security review.

What routing and failover behavior should I compare?

Routing is more than selecting a model name. Compare how a candidate makes a decision for each request, how it reacts to errors, and how operators can explain the result later.

Load balancing

Ask whether traffic can be distributed across multiple credentials, regions, or providers and whether distribution is weighted, round-robin, latency-aware, or quota-aware. Determine whether weights can differ by application, model, tenant, or time window. A simple rotation may spread calls but still send traffic to a provider that is returning throttling errors.

Retries

Verify which failures trigger a retry, how many attempts are made, and whether delays use exponential backoff. Retrying a non-idempotent operation can create duplicate side effects, especially when an agent invokes tools. Policies should distinguish transient transport failures and rate limits from invalid requests, authentication errors, and content-policy responses that will not improve on a second attempt.

Fallbacks

Confirm whether a fallback can change provider, model, region, or API version while preserving the response contract your application expects. Test what happens when the primary route times out after the provider has accepted the request: a fallback may reduce user-visible errors but can also duplicate generation and cost. Record fallback events so they are visible in billing and incident analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request-level model selection

Some workloads need deterministic routing rules, while others choose a model dynamically based on task, context length, latency target, or budget. Ask whether those rules live in configuration, application code, or a policy service, and whether changes are versioned and reviewable. If a gateway silently rewrites a model name, debugging becomes difficult unless the selected route is returned in logs or response metadata.

How should credentials, billing, and governance be evaluated?

Two gateways can expose the same API while creating very different control and accounting obligations.

  • Credential ownership: determine whether you bring provider keys, use keys issued by the gateway, or can support both. Find out where secrets are stored, who can rotate them, and whether a compromised application key can access every upstream provider.
  • Tenant isolation: check whether projects, teams, or customers can receive separate virtual keys and policies. Verify that one tenant cannot view another tenant’s prompts, logs, budgets, or provider credentials.
  • Budgets and rate limits: identify whether limits are enforced per key, user, model, provider, or time period. Ask what happens at the limit: hard rejection, route change, notification, or temporary overage.
  • Identity and access: enterprise deployments may require single sign-on, role-based administration, approval workflows, and an exportable audit trail. Do not infer these from a generic “enterprise” label.
  • Billing: separate upstream provider charges from gateway charges. A hosted model-access account can simplify invoices but may change markups, credits, tax treatment, or the ability to negotiate directly with a provider.

Write a sample policy before testing: for example, a development team may use lower-cost models, production may require two independent providers, and a regulated project may prohibit prompt retention. Then ask each vendor to demonstrate that policy with the exact role and account structure you will use.

Which observability features matter for multi-provider traffic?

When requests cross several providers, an application log that says only “model call failed” is not enough. Compare the granularity and export options of the gateway’s telemetry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Request records: capture timestamp, application or key, selected provider and model, status, latency, token counts, and retry or fallback events.
  • Cost attribution: determine whether usage is calculated from current provider pricing, imported from your invoices, or entered manually. Check how price changes are updated and how cached or streaming tokens are represented.
  • Tracing: agent workflows need a view that connects the user request, model calls, tool invocations, retries, and final response. Ask whether trace identifiers can be propagated into your existing logging system.
  • Privacy controls: establish whether prompt and completion bodies are stored, redacted, sampled, or excluded. Confirm retention periods and access permissions for sensitive logs.
  • Export and alerting: verify APIs or sinks for your monitoring stack, alerts for error-rate and latency changes, and reports that remain available after you change providers.

Run a deliberate failure test. Cause a provider timeout, an authentication failure, and a rate-limit response in a non-production environment. The operator should be able to identify the route, policy decision, retry count, final outcome, and associated cost without reading raw application code.

How can I evaluate alternatives without trusting a feature list?

Use a short proof of concept with representative traffic and explicit pass/fail criteria. A practical evaluation can be completed in stages.

  1. Define routes: list every provider, model family, region, credential, and data classification you expect to use. Include long-context, streaming, tool-calling, and embedding traffic if they are part of the workload.
  2. Freeze test cases: create a repeatable set of prompts and expected response properties. Include invalid credentials, malformed requests, throttling, timeouts, and provider-specific errors.
  3. Measure policy behavior: verify load distribution, retries, fallbacks, per-key limits, budget exhaustion, and model-selection rules. Record what the gateway reports, not only what the application receives.
  4. Inspect data paths: document where prompts, completions, metadata, and secrets travel and how long each system retains them. Obtain written answers for unresolved residency or deletion questions.
  5. Exercise operations: rotate a credential, change a route, roll back a configuration, and perform an upgrade in a staging environment. Time the work and record every manual step.
  6. Test failure recovery: disable a provider, revoke a key, and exhaust a quota. Confirm that alerts fire, fallbacks behave as designed, and operators can restore normal routing.
  7. Review economics: calculate upstream usage, gateway fees, observability storage, support, and engineering time. Use your own request mix; published examples rarely match it.

Keep the same test harness when comparing products. Otherwise, differences in SDK behavior, prompt formatting, or retry settings can be mistaken for a gateway advantage.

How do I migrate from LiteLLM to another gateway?

A staged migration limits risk and keeps a rollback path. The exact dashboard labels differ by vendor, but the sequence is broadly portable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory current behavior: export model aliases, provider credentials, virtual keys, budgets, rate limits, retry settings, fallback order, logging destinations, and application-specific headers. Include undocumented assumptions in client code.
  2. Classify traffic: separate development, production, batch, interactive, streaming, tool-calling, and sensitive requests. Each class may need a different route or retention policy.
  3. Map the API contract: compare authentication headers, model naming, streaming events, error shapes, timeouts, token accounting, and response metadata. Resolve incompatibilities before moving production traffic.
  4. Recreate provider connections: add credentials in the new system using its recommended secret store. Start with the least-privileged keys and confirm rotation procedures.
  5. Implement routing policies: reproduce primary routes, retry boundaries, and fallbacks explicitly. Do not assume that a setting with the same name has the same semantics.
  6. Connect observability: send gateway logs and metrics to the same incident and cost systems, while applying the new platform’s redaction and retention controls.
  7. Shadow or canary: send a small, non-user-visible sample or a limited percentage of traffic to the candidate. Compare success rate, latency, token usage, output validity, and fallback frequency with the LiteLLM path.
  8. Cut over gradually: move one application or tenant at a time. Keep LiteLLM configured and credentials valid until the new route has passed an agreed stability period.
  9. Retire deliberately: revoke old keys, remove obsolete DNS or service entries, archive configuration, and document the rollback decision and ownership.

Which architecture pattern fits common workloads?

Application-side SDK with a thin proxy

Use this when developers need a convenient common client but the platform team wants only central credential and policy enforcement. Keep business logic in the application, and ensure that provider selection remains observable.

Central enterprise gateway

Use one shared endpoint for many services when identity, budgets, audit, and provider policy must be consistent. This reduces duplicated integrations but makes the gateway a critical dependency; deploy health checks, capacity limits, and an emergency bypass or secondary path.

Separate gateways by data boundary

Run distinct instances or accounts for regulated, internal, and public workloads when their retention or residency rules cannot be combined safely. This increases administration, so automate configuration and maintain a single policy inventory.

Managed model catalog plus private sensitive route

Use a hosted service for general workloads and a self-controlled provider connection for restricted prompts. The routing rule must be explicit and testable; a model alias should not accidentally send sensitive data to the hosted catalog.

What are the most common failure modes?

  • Hidden double retries: the application, gateway, and provider SDK may each retry. Cap attempts at one layer and make the total delay visible.
  • Incompatible streaming: a fallback may return a different event format or terminate streams differently. Test client cancellation and partial responses, not only complete generations.
  • Credential sprawl: copying provider keys into multiple gateways defeats central rotation. Choose one ownership model and remove unused secrets.
  • Incorrect cost attribution: a gateway may estimate prices from a catalog that changed. Reconcile sampled gateway records with provider invoices.
  • Policy bypass: developers may call providers directly when the gateway is slow or unavailable. Use network controls, code review, or explicit exception routes if central governance is mandatory.
  • Stale model aliases: an alias can point to a retired or changed model. Version aliases, announce changes, and keep a compatibility test suite.
  • Log leakage: verbose request logging can expose prompts, secrets, or tool arguments. Redact by default and grant raw-body access only to authorized responders.
  • Single-provider fallback: a second model under the same provider may fail during a provider-wide incident. If resilience is the goal, test independence at the provider and region level.

How should I compare prices and commercial terms?

Reliable current prices and exact limits are not established uniformly across the alternatives. Request a quote or read the vendor’s current plan documentation for the date and region that apply to you. Record whether charges are per request, token, seat, gateway volume, observability retention, support tier, or markup on model usage.

Ask specifically about minimum commitments, overage behavior, free allowances, data-retention add-ons, log-export fees, support response times, and cancellation or data-export procedures. For self-hosted software, include infrastructure, upgrades, security patching, and on-call labor in the total cost. For managed model access, compare the convenience of one invoice with the loss of direct provider billing control.

What is a practical decision checklist?

  • Have you identified whether the primary need is a proxy, managed model access, governance, observability, or operating-cost reduction?
  • Is the hosting boundary compatible with your data-residency and retention requirements?
  • Can you use your own provider keys, and can every key be rotated without application downtime?
  • Do routing rules cover load balancing, retries, fallbacks, streaming, tool calls, and model selection?
  • Are budgets, rate limits, tenant isolation, identity, and audit exports sufficient for your control requirements?
  • Can operators trace a request across providers and attribute tokens and cost accurately?
  • Have you tested provider outages, quota exhaustion, malformed requests, and credential failures?
  • Is there a documented migration and rollback plan with an owner and a review date?
  • Have current license, pricing, support, regional availability, and security terms been verified from primary vendor materials?

If the answers are incomplete, keep LiteLLM or the existing gateway in place while you close the gaps. Switching gateways changes a critical network and policy layer; a slightly longer evaluation is cheaper than discovering an incompatible fallback or retention rule during an incident.

Which alternative should I try first?

Choose the candidate whose operating model matches your strongest constraint, not the one with the longest feature list. Put self-hosted candidates through an operations and upgrade exercise; put managed services through a data-path, outage, and billing review; put observability-focused products through a routing-behavior test if they are expected to replace the gateway itself. The shortlist—Bifrost, Portkey, Kong AI Gateway, Agent Router, TrueFoundry, Cloudflare AI Gateway, Vercel AI Gateway, OpenRouter, Helicone, and Respan—gives you places to start, but your workload’s measured behavior and the vendors’ current terms should determine the final choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use more than one LLM gateway at the same time?

Yes, but define ownership clearly. Running separate gateways by environment or data class can reduce blast radius, while putting gateways in series can create duplicate retries, confusing logs, and unexpected costs. If you do use more than one, assign one system as the policy authority for each request path.

Does an OpenAI-compatible endpoint guarantee that an alternative is a drop-in replacement?

No. Compatibility can cover basic request and response fields while differing in streaming events, tool-call serialization, error codes, timeouts, token accounting, or model naming. Test the exact client features your applications use before changing the base URL.

How can I keep provider outages from breaking an agent workflow?

Design fallbacks around the agent’s side effects, not only its text generation. Make tool operations idempotent where possible, persist workflow state, and distinguish a timeout before provider acceptance from a confirmed rejection so a retry does not repeat an external action.

What should I log when prompts contain personal or confidential data?

Log identifiers, route decisions, status, latency, token counts, and policy events while redacting or excluding prompt and completion bodies by default. Restrict any raw-content access, set a short retention period, and document which operators can retrieve it for incident response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is consolidating all provider billing through one service always cheaper?

Not necessarily. Consolidation may reduce administration, but a gateway can add usage markups, platform fees, or retention charges and may remove direct-provider discounts. Compare an identical request sample against direct provider invoices and include engineering and support costs.
