LG Gram 14: At First Glance

Just like their name suggests (Gram), you can easily guess that LG gives special attention to the weight of its Gram line of laptops. The LG Gram 14 with its extreme lightweight, is no exception.

Though there are numerous thin and light laptops that have gotten thinner, LG’s Gram series remains one of the lightest.

Despite the lightweight of the LG Gram 14, LG hasn’t sacrificed the laptop’s hardware specs and performance. This laptop features the range of high-end specs you would expect in a laptop of its price range.

LG Gram 14: Design, Dimension, and Weight

The LG Gram 14’s light weight is its most notable feature. This laptop weighs 994 g!

When compared to other 14-inch laptops, the LG Gram 14 is very light. For instance, it is lighter than the Lenovo Yoga C930 that weighs 1380 g.

Moreover, it is also lighter than the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 that weighs 1252 g, and the HP Spectre Folio with a weigh of 1470 g.

A major contributing factor to this laptop’s lightweight is its magnesium alloy chassis. This magnesium material makes the LG Gram 14 very light but also surprisingly strong.

However, you will notice a little bit of flex in the lid and keyboard deck when pressure is exerted on them. But, it is not something to be worried about.

Put that aside and you will be forced to appreciate the laptop’s lightweight and solid build. Moreover, the LG Gram 14 has passed a series of MIL-STD-810G tests.

Hence, it can withstand shock, high temperatures, humidity, and other severe real-life usage conditions.

Moving on, despite being light, the LG Gram 14 is not very compact. It measures 322.5 x 210.8 x 15.2 mm.

LG took a very simple approach in terms of the LG Gram 14’s design. Its dark Silver finish doesn’t call for attention but it is very classy.

The moment you open this laptop you will be impressed by its awesome display. It is not much of a surprise since LG still maintains its reputation for creating excellent displays.

Below the display is a well-spaced keyboard that is comfortable for typing. This laptop’s touchpad is also very smooth and responsive.

Furthermore, the LG Gram 14’s port selection is very impressive for a laptop as thin as it is. This laptop offers 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 3.0 Type C port, 1 USB Type C port, an HDMI port, and a headphone jack.

Overall, the LG Gram 14’s build quality is very solid despite being very light. Therefore, it scores a nine in this review.

LG Gram 14: Processor (CPU) Performance

LG equipped the LG Gram 14 with a quad-core Intel Core i7-8550U processor. This processor has a base frequency of 1.80 GHz and a maximum (boost) frequency of 4.0 GHz.

With this Core i7 processor, the LG Gram 14 offers excellent processing speed and power. It easily handles regular computing tasks like Spreadsheet preparation, document editing, and web browsing.

This laptop also has enough power to push through some more demanding tasks as long as they are not graphically intensive.

On a Geekbench 4 single-core CPU test, the LG Gram 14 scored 4085 points. Moreover, it scored 14,392 in the multi-core test.

Comparatively, the LG Gram 14 did better than Lenovo Yoga C930’s 13,978 points in the multi-core test. However, it performed lower than Lenovo Yoga C930’s single-core test score of 4,151.

Nonetheless, the LG Gram 14 is a strong performer for its class of CPU. Therefore it scores an eight in this CPU review.

LG Gram 14: Memory (RAM) Performance

The LG Gram 14 comes with 8 GB DDR4 RAM. This laptop’s RAM cannot be upgraded because it has only one RAM slot.

Nonetheless, the LG Gram 14 excels in terms of RAM performance. Moreover, its results in benchmark tests were also very impressive.

The LG Gram 14 scored 5749 points in a PCMark 10 productivity test. It only fell behind a few of its competitors like the Dell XPS 13 that scored 5759 points.

On regular RAM performance tests, the LG Gram 14 ran smoothly with 15 Chrome browser tabs while a movie was being streamed on Netflix.

In conclusion, I rate this laptop a seven for its above-average RAM performance.

LG Gram 14: Storage Options and Performance

LG offers a 512 GB M.2 SSD for this laptop’s storage. You also get a microSD card reader for additional storage.

The LG Gram 14’s storage speed is very impressive. On a CrystalDiskMark test, the LG Gram 14 recorded a sequential read speed of 3408 MBps and a sequential write speed of 1540 MBps.

Moving on to the file transfer test, the LG Gram 14 also performed considerably well. It took 12 seconds to copy 4.97 GB of multimedia files at a transfer rate of 389 MBps.

However, it came short of the 526 MBps category average. Nonetheless, the LG Gram 14 still surpassed the Yoga C930 that recorded a 339 MBps copy rate, and the Surface Laptop 2’s 203 MBps copy rate.

Hence, the LG Gram 14 scores an eight in this review for its impressive storage speed and capacity.

LG Gram 14: Graphics Card Performance

The LG Gram 14 features an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU. This GPU has a base frequency of 300 MHz and a boost frequency of 1150 MHz.

Although the LG Gram 14 offers an excellent CPU performance, its GPU (graphics) performance is not very spectacular.

To give you some details, the LG Gram 14 is more suitable for carrying out simple media tasks and light gaming. This laptop is not capable of running most AAA title games.

On a gaming test, the LG Gram 14 ran Dirt 3 at 51 FPS. It surpassed the Lenovo Yoga C930’s 37 FPS but couldn’t surpass the Surface Laptop 2 that offered 82 FPS.

In conclusion, the LG Gram 14 scores a six in this review for its below-average GPU performance.

LG Gram 14: Battery Life and Performance

The LG Gram 14 comes with a 4 Cell 72Wh Lithium-ion battery. According to LG, this laptop offers 17.5 hours of battery life.

However, the LG Gram 14 didn’t offer the advertised battery life when its battery was put to test. This laptop lasted 11 hours 30 minutes on a continuous web surfing battery test.

Nonetheless, the LG Gram 14’s battery life is enough to get you through a full workday.

Moreover, the LG Gram 14 surpassed the 8 hours 30 minutes premium laptop average battery life. The LG Gram 14 also outlasted the Surface Laptop 2 that delivered 9 hours 22 minutes.

The Yoga C930 that lasted 8 hours 9 minutes was also not a macth for the .

Ultimately, this laptop’s battery life is excellent. Therefore, it scores an eight in this review.
