LG 55UK6500AUA: At First Glance

LG is known for manufacturing high-quality televisions with good picture quality and the LG 55Uk6500AUA is no exception.

With a price tag of $2,999.99 as at the time I wrote this article in December 2021, the LG 55Uk6500AUA doesn’t seem highly priced for a 4K television. After all, the array of features LG claims this TV offers looks mouth-watering enough for the TV’s asking price.

With that being said, how well does the LG 55UK6500AUA stand against its other competition? Well, that is what you are about to find out in the other sections of this article.

LG 55UK6500AUA: Design, Dimension, and Weight

The LG 55UK6500AUA is another one of LG’s shows of consistent quality. From their introductory HD set of TVs to their awesome OLED TVs, you’ll never catch LG failing to show quality.

It is pretty much the same with their 4K mid-range 4K TVs.

From the first inspection, you will notice the obvious flair in the LG 55UK6500AUA’s design. The TV shows off LG’s design brilliance with its brushed steel finish.

If you focus more on the details, you will notice how well LG has put its design prowess into display here. Unlike the LG 49UH6100, the LG 55UK6500AUA’s design is much more simple and straightforward.

The LG 55UK6500AUA has narrow bezels and an ultra-slim finish that perfectly rounds off its fantastic design.

You may, however, be a bit disappointed when you hold the LG 55UK6500AUA. This is because the TV is mainly built with plastic.

On the bright side, this TV’s plastic build is not very obvious from plain sight. You will have to hold it to fully confirm its construction material.

Aside from the fact that it picks up a lot of fingerprints, the LG 55UK6500AUA’s nice body finish and glossy textured back panel make it look more solid. Besides, the TV has a durable and solid build.

It barely creaks or twists when you apply pressure on its body.

Not only is the TV’s body solid, the stand on which it sits is also incredibly stable. With just a few screws, you can easily fit in the stand to both sides of the TV.

Talking about stands, the width between the two stands is nearly as wide as the TV itself. Although the wide space between them may cause you some troubles in the sense that you have to place the TV on a wide tabletop, there’s a bright side to it.

First of all, the large spacing between the two legs ensures that the TV sits firmly on any smooth surface it is placed on. Aside from that, the stands also permit you to conveniently place a soundbar below the TV.

If you still don’t buy the idea of tabletops and stands, you can also wall-mount the LG 55UK6500AUA. All you need to do is install a VESA mount on the back of the TV and you will be able to place it on a wall.

The good thing about installing this TV on a wall is that it is neither very big nor too heavy, so it will fit just fine on your wall. As for its dimension, the LG 55UK6500AUA measures 1236.9 x 63.5 x 718.8 mm and it weighs 16011 g.

Overall, the LG 55UK6500AUA has a simple and elegant design. As a result, it scores an eight in this design review.

LG 55UK6500AUA: Display Features

The brilliance of the LG 55UK6500AUA doesn’t start and end with its design. The quality of pictures this TV can offer is equally remarkable.

In fact, the clean and colorful pictures this TV offers will leave you in awe.

For the most part, the LG 55UK6500AUA’s good picture quality is largely thanks to its 4K UHD resolution of 3840 x 2160. Since 4K resolution is four times greater than Full HD, this TV is able to produce very clear images.

Moreover, LG equips this TV with the 4K active HDR technology that further helps bring content to life. This feature makes the LG 55UK6500AUA capable of producing a beautiful range of colors.

However, that is not all there is to the LG 55UK6500AUA’s accurate picture reproduction capabilities. There are still more features that help to ensure that LG 55UK6500AUA produces colorful content.

The LG 55UK6500AUA features a True Color Accuracy technology. This technology helps the TV perfectly reproduce colors in content as the director of the content intended for you to see them.

In other words, the LG 55UK6500AUA displays contents with incredible accuracy that makes them seem as if they are real. This feature makes the LG 55UK6500AUA very suitable for watching documentary content or for playing games.

With the LG 55UK6500AUA, you can appreciate the beauty of nature and other colorful contents right in your living room. Speaking of colors, it is necessary to mention that the LG 55UK6500AUA also has an incredibly wide color gamut.

For more understanding, the color gamut indicates the number of colors a display is capable of offering among the available color space. If a TV has a wide color gamut, it means the TV can accurately reproduce a wide range of colors.

This is the case with the LG 55UK6500AUA since it offers an excellent range of color gamut.

With a wide color gamut of 94.17%, the LG 55UK6500AUA can display most of the colors commonly used today. This is particularly great for HDR content since they are always very colorful.

Consequently, the LG 55UK6500AUA’s wide color gamut means you will be able to accurately enjoy colorful HDR content.

The beauty of the display features that have been talked about in the previous paragraphs is that LG further equips this TV with more complementing features.

LG also equips this TV with other HDR features to help ensure that you don’t only get accurate colors, but also bright and vibrant ones. The two other HDR features are the HDR10 and the HLG.

These two features help to improve the picture performance on the LG 55UK6500AUA. To start with, the HDR10 helps by expanding the TV’s contrast ratio and color palette to achieve more details across the images the TV displays.

More precisely, the HDR10 feature refines image details from the darkest part to the brightest part. Through this process, it offers a good contrast ratio that results in more realistic image production.

If you are not familiar with what contrast ratio means, it is the ratio between the brightest white and the darkest black the TV can reproduce simultaneously. To give more detail, the LG 55UK6500AUA has a contrast ratio of 1300:1.

Going by the major standard of 3000:1 ratio, this contrast ratio won’t seem very appealing, but the LG 55UK6500AUA still has more tricks up its sleeve. With the help of other additional features, the LG 55UK6500AUA can further improve its contrast ratio.

One of these additional features is the local dimming feature that helps to improve the depth of the black colors the TV offers so it can offer a splendid viewing experience. The other is the ultra luminance feature that increases the contrast ratio even more so you can get brighter whites and darker blacks.

Also, this feature ensures that the LG 55UK6500AUA can get bright enough in general. As a result, the LG 55UK6500AUA can offer a peak brightness of 400 nits.

The HLG, on the other hand, serves another different purpose from what the HDR10 does. LG equipped this TV with the HLG feature to give the assurance that this TV won’t become obsolete quickly.

In simpler terms, this HLG feature ensures that the LG 55UK6500AUA will be able to keep up with new 4K TV broadcasts. Since HLG is the newest transmission technology for upcoming 4K broadcasts, watching 4K channels on this TV will look more stunning than standard HD.

Aside from these features, this TV also offers the benefits an LCD and IPS screen has to offer because its display technology is a combination of the two. Due to this, the LG 55UK6500AUA has impressive viewing angles.

In comparison, its viewing angle is much better than the one LG NANO90 has to offer. You won’t face any viewing difficulty if you have a wide seating arrangement in your room.

When you are viewing at an angle, this TV is capable of retaining contrast and color accuracy. Aside from its display panel technology, I also feel the TV’s good aspect ratio complements the excellent viewing angles it offers.

The LG 55UK6500AUA has a display aspect ratio of 16:9. In case you are not familiar with what aspect ratio means, it is the ratio between the horizontal and vertical sides of a TV’s display.

As for motion-specific performance, the LG 55UK6500AUA performs excellently with motion contents. To start with, the LG 55UK6500AUA offers a very good response time.

If you are not aware of the meaning of response time, it represents the minimum amount of time a TV display takes to transition from one color to another. In the case of the LG 55UK6500AUA, you get a response time of 9 milliseconds.

This means that the TV will be able to cope with fast-motion content. Hence, viewing content like fast-action movies and sports on the LG 55UK6500AUA will be smooth and enjoyable.

That is not all, gaming on the LG 55UK6500AUA will also be a very enjoyable experience thanks to its fast response time. Another factor that makes the LG 55UK6500AUA excellent for gaming is its incredible input lag.

To be precise, the LG 55UK6500AUA has an input lag of 13.6 ms. The fantastic low input lag this TV has means it can deliver an extremely responsive gaming experience.

However, the gaming experience the LG 55UK6500AUA offers is a bit slower than the ones most gaming monitors offer because of its 60 Hz refresh rate. Nonetheless, its gaming performance is very impressive.

In conclusion, the picture quality and motion production this TV offers are excellent. As a result, LG 55UK6500AUA scores an eight in this display features review section.

LG 55UK6500AUA: Sound Features

The LG 55UK6500AUA comes equipped with two built-in speaker channels with each of them carrying 10W power. Hence, you get a total sound output power of 20W.

Within an average room space, this 20W power speaker should be loud enough. Besides, the speaker set included in this TV is the Dolby Digital Plus set.

Hence, the sound the LG 55UK6500AUA produces is a bit better than what you would normally get from the average speaker set. Aside from the improved speaker technology on the LG 55UK6500AUA, it also comes with simulated surround sound technology.

This technology helps the TV to tune and balance the sound it produces. With this process, the LG 55UK6500AUA is able to fill its nearby surrounding with the sound it produces.

However, if you want much better sound quality, I would advise that you get an additional sound system. Besides, the TV’s ultra surround sound system works better when you use it with an external speaker.

For more specific sound performance details, we’ve considered things like the TV’s frequency response and distortion performance. To make it clearer, frequency response has to do with how well a sound system can reproduce each frequency in a sound signal.

Meanwhile, distortion represents the amount of disturbance a sound signal suffers from.

As for the frequency response, the LG 55UK6500AUA has a decent frequency response.

However, this TV barely produces adequate bass response and thumps. At moderate listening levels, you will notice the sound profile of the LG 55UK6500AUA to be fairly balanced.

However, when you increase the TV’s volume to the maximum, you will notice that the sound profile becomes unbalanced. The resultant effect of this is that dialogues may be inaudible at times and they may sound muted.

Even though the LG 55UK6500AUA can get quite loud, there’s a noticeable compression in the sound it produces at maximum volume.

That said, the distortion the LG 55UK6500AUA suffers from is okay. It has a total harmonic distortion of 1.8 which isn’t too bad compared to the 0.100 average acceptable value.

As I hinted earlier, the LG 55UK6500AUA suffers from a decent amount of distortion at moderate listening levels. However, the distortion gets worse at maximum listening volumes.

Fortunately, the distortion this TV suffers from varies between content. Besides, you may not be sensitive enough to be disturbed by the distortion in its sound output.

Due to these reasons, the LG 55UK6500AUA scores a seven in this sound features section.

LG 55UK6500AUA: Ports and Connectivity Features

When it comes to ports, the LG 55UK6500AUA isn’t spectacular, but it does offer a good amount of ports. Most of the ports on the TV are positioned on its back, so it may be a bit stressful to access them if you wall-mount the TV.

There are also a few ports on the side, but the majority of them are on the TV’s back.

Out of the four HDMI ports the LG 55UK6500AUA has to offer, two are located on the side of the TV. Meanwhile, the other two are on the back of the TV.

Still on the HDMI ports, two of them support an audio return channel that enables you to connect a subwoofer or an external sound system to the TV.

On another note, all the HDMI ports are HDCP 2.2 compatible. HDCP stands for High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection.

It is a more secure copy-prevention technology that helps to prevent the copying of digital AV content. The essence of this technology is to help reduce piracy of movies and video content from DVD, BluRay, digital streaming, etc.

Aside from the HDMI ports, the LG 55UK6500AUA also offers two USB ports. One of these USB ports is on the side of the TV while the other is on its back.

There’s also an RF In port, an Ethernet port, a composite In port, and digital audio out port all on the back of the LG 55UK6500AUA.

The LG 55UK6500AUA also offers connectivity features with its version 4.2 Bluetooth, its wired LAN, and Wi-Fi.

For remote control, you get LG’s popular Magic remote. This remote is still as large as it usually is.

Fortunately, LG has recently redesigned the remote so there’s a little bit of change to the remote aside from its unchanged large size. Instead of the previous curved shape we’ve gotten used to, the Magic remote is now flat.

Even with its flatter shape, it has more quick access buttons to apps like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and the app store itself.

Aside from the regular control commands, you can use this remote as a virtual pointer for navigating around the TV’s menus. Since the remote has a built-in microphone, you can make use of voice commands through Google Assistant and Alexa.

This voice control feature makes it easy for you to issue commands to the TV. With this feature, you can easily and quickly search for content, ask questions, or change basic settings on the TV.

Overall, the ports and connectivity feature the LG 55UK6500AUA has to offer are quite satisfactory. As a result, it scores an eight in this section of the review.

LG 55UK6500AUA: Smart Features

The presence of a quad-core processor in the LG 55UK6500AUA ensures that the ‘WebOS’ operating system’s smart features work smoothly. You can switch from one running application to another within the blink of an eye.

Besides, the WebOS has an impressive interface that’s extremely easy to use and understand. With a single touch on the home icon that is on the remote, you can bring up a scrolling bar at the bottom of the screen.

After bringing up this scrolling bar, all you need to do is scroll left or right to get from one smart feature to another. The quick access at the bottom of the screen also allows you to select your next viewing option without losing sight of what you’re watching at that exact moment.

Thanks to the recent redesign LG has done on the WebOS smart platform, you get a full home page displaying all your available app. Hence, navigating around the menu is less complex and straightforward.

Moreover, the smart platform on the LG 55UK6500AUA offers an array of content streaming apps that are enough to keep you entertained. While you have to pay to access some content streaming websites like Now TV, Amazon Prime, and Netflix, there are also some free apps.

These free streaming services include BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, Demand 5, and a few others.

Another beautiful thing about this TV’s smart features is its Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility.

These features will allow you to carry out operations like controlling the TV’s volume and changing channels. You will also be able to navigate around the TV without the use of the remote control.

In conclusion, the smart platform, and features this TV offer are very satisfactory. Its smart platform is smooth, easy to use and navigate around.

Due to all of these reasons, the LG 55UK6500AUA scores an eight in this smart features review.
