Lenovo Thinkpad T430: At First Glance

As the next release in the Thinkpad T series, Lenovo offered the T430. The predecessor Lenovo Thinkpad T420 made a reputation in its time and the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 is capable of holding up the mantle.

When it was released in 2012, the notebook might have been a little more expensive however, now it cost just $199.00. The price was accurate when we published this article in August 2021 which is about 9 years from the notebook’s release date.

We have successfully given you an overview of the Thinkpad T series and discussed the price of T430. Therefore, let’s get into the main business of reviewing the king of 14-inch business notebooks!

Lenovo Thinkpad T430: Design, Dimension & Weight

If you take a look at the Lenovo Thinkpad T430, you will agree with me that Lenovo built this laptop with durability as its core value. You can attribute its resilience to the magnesium-alloy roll cages, carbon-reinforced plastics, and fiberglass.

Lenovo made the notebook out of black plastic reinforced with carbon fiber. The lid of the laptop is graced with Lenovo and Thinkpad text ensigns at the top left and right corners.

To open the lid, you need to slide a latch that securely locks the lid to protect the display during transportation. When you open the lid, it exposes the display which is firmly supported by two metal hinges customary to Thinkpads.

The 14-inch display has an antiglare coating. This is a good thing especially for preventing light reflections that are associated with a glossy coating.

Moreover, the display is surrounded by thick bezels which conform to the 2012 standards. Meanwhile, on the top bezel, there’s the 720 p HD front-facing camera for facial recognition.

Although the screen is not particularly bright, it is colorful and the pictures are detailed. A bit of brightness would have nailed it but it is what it is.

On the laptop’s deck, you’ll find a layout of backlit island keys. There’s a red track point at the center of the keyboard for fast and easy control of the cursor.

At the top of the keyboard, there’s a blue ThinkVantage button that you can use to start system diagnostics and other functions. Asides from the ThinkVantage button, there are also the volume keys and the power button.

The keys are adequately spaced, but regular Thinkpad users will notice a change in the position of some keys. However, it doesn’t take too long to get a hang of the arrangement of the keys.

The keys are firm and have a bouncy feel with satisfying feedback. Typing on the keyboard is generally comfortable.

The keys have more roundness to their bottom edge to reduce the possibility of pressing two keys at once. This curved keys technique seems more efficient and accurate than the regular square keys found on most Thinkpad laptops.

Below the keyboard, there’s a touchpad with 4 separate mouse buttons. The touchpad is precise and it supports multi-touch gestures like pinch to zoom, swipes, and taps.

Moreover, the mouse buttons are firm and they have tactile feedback. The red track point allows fast cursor movement but it may be too fast sometimes.

Using the track point automatically deactivates the touchpad. Hence, users have the option of alternating between the track point or touchpad – personally, I prefer the touchpad.

By the right-hand side of the touchpad, there’s a fingerprint reader for easy biometrics verification.

As a business laptop, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 has a reasonable number of ports for plug-and-gos. Specifically, on the left, there are two USB 3.0 ports.

Impressively, the T430 is the first laptop in the series to include the USB 3.0 for fast lossless transfers. In addition to the USB 3.0, there’s a DisplayPort, VGA, and a jack that works for both headphones and microphones.

While on the right side of the laptop there is a USB 2.0 port and a 4-in-1 card reader. Furthermore, the right side also houses an ExpressCard/34 slot, a wireless on and off switch, a DVD-RW drive, and a security lock slot.

Meanwhile, the laptop’s rear houses another USB 2.0 port, a power adapter, and a Gigabit Ethernet connector.

When it comes to weight and dimension, the laptop is on the bulky side. This bulkiness is an inevitable fate of the T430 due to its 9 cell battery and magnesium roll cages.

The laptop measures 340.5 x 232 x 29.9 mm. Additionally, the laptop weighs 2,166 g and 2,358.68 g without and with the inclusion of the 9 cell battery respectively.

The laptop is portable enough to slide easily in a backpack. However, it will begin to tell on your back when you carry it for long.

Nevertheless, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 (without the battery) is slightly lighter than the Dell XPS 14. Specifically, the Dell XPS 14 measures 335.28 x 233.68 x 20.6 mm and weighs 2164 g.

Finally, the Lenovo Thinkpad is a strongly built laptop with guaranteed durability. Additionally, there is a rich selection of ports to connect your peripherals.

Hence, for the design and dimension, I’ll rate the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 a seven.

Lenovo Thinkpad T430: Processor (CPU) Performance

The Lenovo Thinkpad T430 employs a 3rd Gen dual-core Intel Core i7-3520M processor for its processing activities. The Core i7 processor has a cache memory of 4 MB.

Additionally, the Core i7 processor has a base frequency of 2.90 GHz. Meanwhile, you can increase the processor’s speed to a maximum frequency of 3.60 GHz via Intel Turbo Boost.

As a basis for real-life benchmarking, I’ll use the wPrime processor benchmark. The wPrime is a multi-threaded benchmark tool for evaluating a computer’s processor performance using Newton’s method of estimation.

The result is the estimated runtime taken to compute the processor’s overclocking ability, the faster it takes, the better. Based on the outcome of the benchmark test, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 recorded 15.04 seconds.

As a basis of comparison, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 completed the task faster than the HP Elitebook 8460p. The HP Elitebook 8460p runtime was 16.65 seconds.

Additionally, the Dell Lattitude E6420 also lagged behind the Lenovo Thinkpad T430. Specifically, on this benchmark test, the Dell Latitude recorded an estimated runtime of 18 seconds.

Finally, the processor performance of the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 is impressive considering that it outperformed its competitors in the benchmark test. Hence, I’ll rate it an eight for this reason.

Lenovo Thinkpad T430: Memory (RAM) Performance

In terms of memory, the Lenovo Thinkpad employs a DDR3 memory. There are two RAM slots on the motherboard and each slot can take a maximum capacity of 8 GB.

So, since each RAM slot can take up to 8 GB, the laptop can accommodate up to 16 GB of RAM.

Lenovo equipped the T430 model I reviewed was equipped with 8 GB RAM in dual-channel mode. Dual-channel implies that the memory communicates with its controller with 2 channels, which results in a better performance than single-channel.

With 8 GB RAM in reserve for the Lenovo Thinkpad T430, it was quite the multitasker. Even by today’s standard, 8 GB is still an acceptable memory capacity for sufficient multitasking.

However, if you’ll be using this laptop for memory-intensive tasks it is safer to upgrade to 16 GB RAM.

As proof of the laptop’s multitasking ability, I streamed a video on Netflix while six files were opened in File Explorer. Concurrently, there were 16 active tabs running in the Chrome browser.

Consequently, these activities ran smoothly without stuttering or slowdowns. I only started to notice a drop in speed when I tried processing a word document.

For the benchmark test, I used the PCMark 7 benchmark. PCMark 7 is a benchmark tool for Windows 7 and 8 computers, it evaluates the complete system’s performance.

As a result of the test, Lenovo Thinkpad T430 scored 3,135 points. In comparison with the HP EliteBook 8460p, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 underperformed.

Specifically, the HP EliteBook 8460p scored 3,370 points. However, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 outperformed the Dell Lattitude E6420 which scored 2673 points.

Finally, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 was a decent multitasker and it recorded a middling performance in the benchmark test. Hence, I’ll rate it a seven in this aspect.

Lenovo Thinkpad T430: Storage Options & Performance

On the storage front, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 has a few drive options. For instance, there’s a 5400RPM HDD, a 7200RPM HDD, an SSD and there’s also an option for an OPAL SSD.

The model I reviewed shipped with an agreeably fast 500 GB 7200RPM hard drive. 500 GB of storage space is sufficient for fairly light storage users.

Unfortunately, 500 GB is the maximum storage capacity for the HDD drives. On the contrary, for the SSD drive and OPAL SSD, you get a maximum capacity of 180 GB and 256 GB respectively.

On a brighter note, heavy storage users can add a second HDD or an SSD to the 7200 RPM slot. This will substantially increase the storage space available.

Additionally, the Lenovo Thinkpad T43 also has a 4-in-1 SD card reader for easy storage expansion.

As a means of benchmarking the storage option, I used the CrystalDiskMark benchmark. CrystalDiskMark is a disk drive benchmarking tool for evaluating the overall storage performance of a computer.

The benchmark test reads and writes through the storage filesystem. The result is the speed of execution – the faster, the better.

Based on the outcome of the test, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 recorded a sequential read speed of 118.4 MBps and a sequential write speed of 119.4 MBps.

In comparison, the HP EliteBook 8460p recorded a sequential read speed of 87.93 MBps and a sequential write speed of 87.15 MBps. Comparatively, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 recorded a faster read and write speed compared to the competing HP EliteBook 8460p.

In conclusion, I’ll rate the storage performance of the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 an eight as a result of its impeccable performance in the benchmark test.

Lenovo Thinkpad T430: Graphics Card Performance

Lenovo equips Lenovo Thinkpad T430 is with integrated Intel HD Graphics and the NVIDIA Optimus Graphics. The NVIDIA Optimus is an energy-saving discrete GPU that automatically switches the GPU on when it is in use and off when idle.

The laptop ships with both graphics cards.

As a basis for benchmarking the GPU, I used the 3DMark 6 benchmark test. The 3DMark 6 is a benchmarking tool that evaluates the overall 3D gaming capabilities of a computer’s graphics card.

As a result of the test, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 scored 6,621 points. This outperformed the Dell Lattitude E6420p which recorded 5,230 points in the same test.

Similarly, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 also outperformed the HP EliteBook 8460p which scored 5,028 points in the same test.

Furthermore, I attempted a gaming test on the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 even though I knew this was an overreaching ambition. The Lenovo Thinkpad T430 is a business notebook and not designed for a graphics-intensive task such as gaming.

Moreover, the laptop lacked dedicated graphics which is the powerhouse of capable gaming laptops. However, I still went ahead with the gaming test anyway and was looking forward to a somewhat miracle.

After all, the game – Half-Life 2 was just an old source game and the setting was at its lowest. Specifically, I played Half-Life 2, and surprisingly, the game played between 80 fps and 220 fps.

Additionally, I also played Dirt Showroom at a resolution of 768 p. Impressively, the game was playable even at a high setting where it played at 32.2 fps.

Meanwhile, at medium settings the game played at 52.1 fps. Lastly, at low settings the game played at 78 fps.

That’s pretty much all the gaming juice you can get out of the Lenovo Thinkpad T430. Old games might be playable on low settings but anything other than that, don’t expect a smooth performance or any newer, more graphics-demanding games.

Finally, I’ll rate the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 a seven for its outstanding performance among its competitors in the benchmark test.

Lenovo Thinkpad T430: Battery Life & Performance

The Lenovo Thinkpad T430 is powered by either a 6-Cell 2.6 Ah battery, a 9-Cell 2.8 Ah, or a 6-Cell 2.9 Ah battery. The model I tested shipped with the enormous 9-cell 2.8 Ah battery.

Lenovo advertised that the battery is able to deliver up to 50 hours of battery life. To determine if this claim is true, I carried out a battery runtime test.

The battery rundown test involves surfing the web and refreshing the page every 60 seconds. I also set the screen brightness to 70% and the laptop was on Windows 7 OS.

As a result of the battery rundown test, the Lenovo Thinkpad T430 lasted a whopping 15 hours. This is the longest battery life you will get on a notebook of this category.

In comparison, the HP EliteBook 8460p lasted 10 hours 32 minutes. Meanwhile, the Dell Lattitude E6420 lasted 8 hours 45 minutes in the same test.

Finally, the laptop performed below Lenovo’s claim however, the performance is beyond my expectation and it performed better than other notebooks. Hence, I’ll rate the notebook a ten in this category.

    • It is possible to make and produce music on Lenovo T430. The laptop comes with an i7 processor, up to 16 GB of RAM. In addition to these already excellent specs, you also have an option for SSD – which is very fast storage. Moreover, Lenovo T430 offers a NVIDIA Optimus Graphics which is a discrete GPU.

My point is that the laptop has all the power you need to perform most computing tasks, including music production.
