For most people carrying a compatible multitool loose in a pants pocket, the pocket clip is the better default: it keeps the tool at the pocket edge for quick access and avoids a separate sheath. Choose a lanyard ring when you will attach the tool to cord, a backpack, a suspension clip or another tether, or when you prefer pulling a loop from a pouch. The choice is only useful if the accessory fits your exact Leatherman model.

There is no independent, controlled test showing that one option is universally stronger or more comfortable. Leatherman’s own guidance says the decision depends on how you use the tool, which tool you have and your personal preference. Treat the comparison below as a carry-planning decision rather than a durability ranking.

Quick decision: clip or ring?

Question Choose a pocket clip when… Choose a lanyard ring when…
How will you access the tool? You want to pull it from the edge of a front or back pocket with one hand. You will pull a loop from a pouch or retrieve the tool from a tether.
Where will it be attached? Directly to pocket fabric; no separate suspension hardware is needed. To cord, a backpack, a belt-suspension clip or another attachment system.
What is your main concern? Keeping the multitool in a predictable position for repeated access. Preventing loss when the tool must remain connected to other gear.
What trade-off can you accept? Some exposure to pocket seams and snag forces. Extra tether or suspension hardware and potentially slower access from a loose pocket.
What must you verify first? The clip variant is made for your exact model family. The ring variant and any tether are made for your exact model family.

If you alternate between these situations, buy the model-specific interchangeable kit rather than assuming a clip or ring from another Leatherman family will fit.

What the two carry methods actually do

Pocket clip

A pocket clip fastens to the multitool and hooks over the top edge of your pocket. The tool remains near the opening instead of settling at the bottom, so your hand has a consistent place to find it. Because the clip is the attachment point, you do not need a sheath or a separate cord for ordinary pocket carry.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This arrangement suits office carry, commuting and everyday-carry routines in which the tool is used repeatedly. It also keeps the tool’s weight concentrated at the pocket edge rather than at the bottom of the pocket. The same exposed position creates its principal cautions: the clip can meet pocket seams, catch on other objects and experience snag forces when clothing moves or the tool is pulled out at an angle.

Lanyard ring

A lanyard ring provides an eyelet for a cord, tether, suspension clip or similar attachment. The ring itself does not suspend the multitool; you supply the cord or connector that determines where the tool hangs. That makes it useful on a backpack, inside a pouch, on a work rig or anywhere you need the tool connected to another item.

The ring can also serve as a pull loop. If the multitool is in a pocket or pouch, a short loop gives your fingers a defined point to grab. When the tool is simply loose in a pants pocket, however, the ring normally adds a separate tethering step and may not be as quick as a clip positioned at the pocket opening.

Comparison by the factors that affect daily carry

Factor Pocket clip Lanyard ring
Access speed Usually fastest for a tool carried at the top of a front or back pocket. Fast when the tether or pull loop is positioned correctly; slower if the ring is buried and has no accessible loop.
Retention arrangement Retention comes from the clip gripping the pocket edge. Retention comes from the cord, clip or suspension system attached to the ring.
Snag exposure The clip is exposed outside the pocket and can meet seams or other fabric. The ring has little benefit without a tether; the tether and its connector introduce their own snag points.
Pocket-seam comfort Comfort depends on where the clip sits and how the pocket opening is constructed. A ring inside the pocket or pouch can avoid a metal clip on the seam, but a loop may still press against the fabric.
Weight distribution Places the multitool at the pocket edge. Places the load wherever the tether or suspension point is located.
Extra equipment None for ordinary pocket carry. Requires a tether, cord, suspension clip or another connector for its main purpose.
Switching effort Requires a compatible accessory and its mounting hardware. Requires a compatible accessory plus a suitable tethering setup.
Model dependence High; clips are sold in family-specific variants. High; rings are also sold in family-specific variants.

These are use-case differences, not measured performance results. Leatherman’s official pages do not publish a controlled retention-force, failure-rate or comfort comparison between the two methods.

Compatibility: check the model before buying

Compatibility is the deciding check because Leatherman sells separate carry accessories for multiple tool families. A ring or clip that looks similar may not match the mounting holes, screws or body geometry of your multitool.

Wave, Charge and Surge accessory

Leatherman’s “Pocket Clip & Lanyard Ring (Wave, Charge, Surge)” listing, SKU 934855, describes interchangeable options: the owner can attach either the quick-release lanyard ring or the pocket clip and carry the tool without a sheath. The same listing warns that the accessory is not compatible with older model Wave.

The United States listing names Wave Plus and Surge as compatible. Regional Leatherman pages additionally list Charge Plus and Charge Plus TTi. Because regional catalogs can differ, use the exact compatibility list shown for your market and edition. Do not infer that every Wave, Charge or Surge generation is covered by the same part.

FREE K-Series accessory

The separate “Lanyard Ring & Pocket Clip FREE K-Series” kit includes a lanyard ring, pocket clip, two T6 screws and a Torx T6 wrench. Its listed compatible models are FREE K2X, FREE K4X and Batch #009 Adapter. That is a different accessory family from the Wave/Charge/Surge kit, so the presence of T6 hardware in the K-Series package is not evidence that the same hardware fits another model.

Other families

Leatherman’s carry-accessory collection shows separate variants for Wave/Charge/Surge, FREE K-Series, Skeletool, Wingman/Rev/Sidekick/Bolster, MUT and other families. The collection is a catalog of variants, not a universal fit chart. Start with your tool’s exact model name and generation, then select the matching accessory listing.

Tool family or listing What is established What to verify
Wave/Charge/Surge, SKU 934855 Interchangeable pocket clip and quick-release lanyard ring; no older-model Wave compatibility. Your exact generation and the regional compatibility list.
Wave Plus and Surge on the US listing Listed as compatible on the US product page. That your tool is the listed edition, not an older or different variant.

FREE K-Series, SKU 934868 Fits FREE K2X, FREE K4X and Batch #009 Adapter; includes ring, clip, two T6 screws and T6 wrench. That your tool is one of those exact FREE models.
Skeletool, Wingman/Rev/Sidekick/Bolster, MUT and other families Separate variants appear in Leatherman’s collection. The individual product page for the exact family and generation.

How to install or switch the accessory

The mounting procedure varies by family, so the accessory’s model-specific instructions take precedence. The following sequence prevents the most common selection and fit mistakes without assuming that every kit uses the same screw or wrench.

  1. Read the model marking. Identify the name printed on the tool, then confirm the generation or edition. “Wave” alone is not enough because the Wave/Charge/Surge listing specifically excludes older model Wave tools.
  2. Open the matching accessory listing. Confirm that your exact model appears in the compatibility text for your region. If it is absent, do not use visual similarity as a substitute for a fit confirmation.
  3. Check the supplied hardware. The FREE K-Series kit includes two T6 screws and a Torx T6 wrench. Use only the hardware supplied for that kit or the hardware specified by the matching instructions; do not transfer screws between unrelated families.
  4. Work with the multitool closed. Keep all blades and implements folded before handling the mounting area. Place the tool on a stable surface so it cannot roll while you position the accessory.
  5. Attach the selected part to its matching mounting point. Align the accessory without forcing it. If the holes or fasteners do not line up cleanly, stop and recheck the model and variant rather than enlarging holes or substituting hardware.
  6. Tighten the specified fasteners evenly. The accessory should sit flush and should not rock when you apply light hand pressure. Do not rely on a partially engaged screw for carry.
  7. Perform a carry check. For a clip, confirm that it grips the pocket edge and that the tool does not slide free during ordinary hand movement. For a ring, attach the intended tether and pull it gently in several directions before carrying it over a hard-to-reach location.
  8. Recheck after the first few carries. Look for a loosening fastener, a shifting clip or a tether connector that is opening. If any part moves, remove the tool from service until the fit is corrected.

Which method fits common carry situations?

Office and commuting

Choose a pocket clip when the multitool is used at a desk, during a commute or for occasional repairs and you want it available without opening a bag. Positioning at the pocket edge also makes it easier to remove the tool without emptying the pocket. A ring is sensible when workplace rules or clothing make an exposed clip undesirable and you can keep the tool inside a pouch with an accessible pull loop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backpack, equipment bag or work rig

Choose a lanyard ring when the tool must stay connected to a bag, cord or suspension clip. The tether can keep the multitool from being left behind when you set it down, while still allowing it to be pulled toward you for use. Select a connector that matches the load and environment; the ring is only the attachment point, not a guarantee that an arbitrary cord will hold.

Loose pocket carry with no sheath

A compatible pocket clip is the straightforward option because it replaces the sheath’s positioning function at the pocket edge. A ring can work if you add a short loop that remains easy to find, but a bare ring at the bottom of a pocket does not provide the same immediate indexing point.

Pouch carry

Either method can work. A clip can secure the tool to the pouch opening if the pouch has a suitable edge. A ring is preferable when the pouch has an internal tether or when you want to pull the multitool out by a loop without exposing a clip to the pouch seam.

Activities where loss is costly

Favor a lanyard ring with an appropriate tether when dropping the multitool would mean losing it or creating a retrieval problem. Inspect the entire connection—the ring, cord, connector and attachment point—because the weakest component determines whether the system stays together.

Retention, snagging and comfort: what can and cannot be claimed

A clip and a ring retain a multitool in different ways, so “more secure” has no universal answer. A clip is secure only while it remains engaged with the pocket edge. A ring is secure only while its tether and connector remain attached. Clothing, movement, pocket construction and the direction of a pull all change the outcome.

The exposed clip can catch on pocket seams or nearby fabric. That does not establish a particular failure rate: Leatherman’s official pages provide no controlled snag test or retention-force comparison. Use the clip where the pocket opening is strong and easy to monitor, and avoid routing it through a position where a normal reach repeatedly twists the clip.

A ring avoids an exposed clip when it is used inside a pouch or on a tether, but the cord or connector can create a new snag path. Keep the tether short enough to control the tool, route it away from moving machinery and inspect it for fraying or damaged gates. These are risk-management practices, not claims that one accessory is inherently more durable.

How to choose in five checks

  1. Identify the carry location. Pocket edge points to a clip; bag, pouch or suspension point points to a ring.
  2. Decide whether a tether is required. If the tool must remain connected to another item, choose a ring and plan the connector at the same time.
  3. Set your access priority. Repeated one-handed pocket access favors a clip; retrieval by a loop favors a ring.
  4. Evaluate snag exposure. Consider seams, zippers, straps and nearby equipment before choosing where the accessory will sit.
  5. Confirm the exact listing. Check model, generation, market and included hardware before ordering.

Common mistakes and fixes

Buying a universal-looking part

Symptom: the accessory does not align or the fastener will not seat. Fix: return to the exact family listing and verify the model and generation. Leatherman’s collection contains multiple family-specific variants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every Wave is compatible

Symptom: an older Wave is being matched to the Wave/Charge/Surge kit. Fix: do not use SKU 934855 for an older model Wave; select an accessory explicitly listing that tool, if one is available.

Using a regional compatibility list as a global guarantee

Symptom: a Charge variant appears on one regional page but not another. Fix: consult the Leatherman page serving your market. The US listing names Wave Plus and Surge, while some regional pages also list Charge Plus and Charge Plus TTi.

Installing a ring without planning the tether

Symptom: the tool is still difficult to find or retrieve. Fix: add a short, accessible loop or suspension connector and test its routing in the actual pocket, pouch or bag.

Ignoring movement after installation

Symptom: the clip rocks, a screw backs out or the tether connector opens. Fix: stop carrying the tool, inspect the model and hardware, and correct the attachment before using it again.

Price and catalog context

Leatherman’s official carry-accessory collection contained 10 results in a 2026 catalog crawl. The Wave/Charge/Surge pocket clip and lanyard ring kit was listed at $10 USD at that time. That is a catalog price for the listed kit, not a guaranteed current price, and regional taxes, shipping and availability can change.

The FREE K-Series kit is a separate product with its own compatibility list and included hardware. Do not use the $10 Wave/Charge/Surge figure as the price of every family’s accessory.

Bottom line for each carry style

  • Choose the pocket clip for a compatible tool that will ride loose at the edge of a pants pocket and needs fast, repeatable access.
  • Choose the lanyard ring when the multitool must connect to a cord, backpack, pouch or suspension system, or when a pull loop is more useful than an exposed clip.
  • Choose an interchangeable kit only after confirming the exact model, generation and regional compatibility list.
  • Do not claim a universal durability winner. Official information describes use cases but does not provide controlled testing of retention, snag failure or comfort.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
