Choose Lean for a new Mathlib-centered mathematics project or when you want theorem proving and functional programming in one language. Choose Coq (now commonly branded Rocq) when an existing dependent-type development, certified-programming workflow, or course already uses it. Choose Isabelle/HOL for higher-order-logic theories, mature automation, and teams invested in Isabelle’s structured document and proof workflow. There is no universal winner: the logic, libraries, automation, programming model, editor support, and existing codebase determine the practical choice.

Lean, Coq/Rocq, and Isabelle at a glance

All three systems let you construct machine-checked formal proofs, but they organize definitions, proofs, automation, and programming differently. The most important distinction is not a popularity ranking; it is whether the assistant matches the work you already need to do.

Assistant Foundation and style Strongest fit Main trade-off
Lean Dependent type theory, explicit proof objects, a theorem prover and functional programming language, with extensive metaprogramming. New formal mathematics, projects using Mathlib, and people who want proving and programming in one language. Lean’s rapidly evolving ecosystem and Mathlib conventions become part of the learning curve; check version compatibility before starting.
Coq/Rocq Dependent-type formal proof management for definitions, executable algorithms, and machine-checked proofs. Established Coq/Rocq developments, certified programming, and courses or teams built around its tooling. Proof scripts and libraries are assistant-specific, so migration can be expensive; verify the project’s branding and tool versions.
Isabelle/HOL Isabelle is a generic proof assistant; Isabelle/HOL uses higher-order logic and an LCF-style architecture. Structured HOL theories, mature automation, and projects using Isabelle’s theory, document, and proof infrastructure. Its concepts and workflow differ substantially from dependent-type systems, so course and tutorial fit matters.

These are engineering choices rather than a contest. A small trial of the same exercise in two systems usually tells you more than a broad claim that one assistant is “easier.” Compare the resulting proof script, library coverage, editor feedback, build behavior, and how comfortably another contributor can review the work.

What Lean is and when it fits

A prover and a programming language

Lean’s official FAQ describes it as a dependent-type system with proof objects, metaprogramming, and a modern user interface. It makes a deliberately broad promise: as the FAQ puts it, “Contrary to other proof assistants, Lean is a full-blown programming language.” That matters when a project needs executable functional code alongside theorems, rather than a separate programming environment and proof language.

Lean’s foundations are dependent type theory. A proposition can be treated as a type whose inhabitants are proofs, and a checked proof object is the artifact the kernel accepts. You do not need to choose between “writing programs” and “formalizing mathematics” at the project level; both activities can live in the same language and toolchain. The practical consequence is that the team must learn Lean syntax, its tactic and term styles, and the conventions of the libraries it uses.

Why Mathlib changes the decision

Mathlib is a community-driven mathematical library and is the central reason many new mathematics projects start with Lean. The Lean community provides browser trials, tutorials, API documentation, cross-platform installation guidance, Zulip support, and GitHub resources. A library is valuable only when its definitions and theorem names fit your intended development, so inspect the relevant Mathlib area before committing to a long project.

Mathlib’s active development is an advantage for coverage and collaboration, but it also creates maintenance work. Lean versions, library revisions, naming conventions, and API changes must line up. Pin the toolchain and library revision for a reproducible project, read the compatibility notes for the tutorial or course you are following, and avoid assuming that an example written for one release will compile unchanged in another.

Lean is the default for a particular question

Pick Lean when your first question is: “Can I formalize modern mathematics with a large shared library and also write functional programs?” It is especially sensible for a new project without an inherited assistant, for a learner who wants one environment for definitions, executable examples, and proofs, or for a team whose target theorems already have Mathlib support.

Lean is not automatically the right choice merely because it is modern or because a tutorial looks approachable. If your institution supplies a Coq course, your organization maintains Isabelle theories, or your project depends on an assistant-specific library, those existing assets outweigh a generic preference.

What Coq/Rocq is and when it fits

Formal proof management for definitions and algorithms

The project is commonly known today as Rocq, although “Coq” remains widespread in documentation and conversation. Its official repository describes it as “a formal proof management system.” The description emphasizes definitions, executable algorithms, and machine-checked proofs: Coq/Rocq is designed to let you define computational objects, reason about them in a dependent-type setting, and obtain checked evidence that the reasoning is valid.

That combination makes Coq/Rocq a natural home for certified programming and long-running dependent-type developments. A team can formalize an algorithm, prove properties about it, and keep the definitions and proofs in one assistant-specific ecosystem. The value is highest when the project already has those definitions, proof scripts, extraction or certification practices, and contributor knowledge.

Why an existing Coq codebase is decisive

Proof scripts are not portable source code in the usual sense. Tactics, theorem statements, module structure, generated artifacts, and library APIs are tied to an assistant and often to particular tool versions. Rewriting a mature Coq development in Lean or Isabelle is therefore a migration project, not a change of editor. Estimate the cost of translating definitions, re-proving lemmas, replacing automation, retraining contributors, and validating generated programs before treating another assistant as an upgrade.

Choose Coq/Rocq when your team already has Coq proofs, relies on certified programming or dependent-type developments, or follows a Coq-centered course. A newcomer should also consider it when the available supervisor, textbook, exercise set, and support community all use Coq/Rocq; a well-supported path is usually more productive than an isolated choice based on general reputation.

Branding and version checks

Because the project is now commonly branded Rocq, check the name used by the repository, course, packages, and build scripts you receive. “Coq” and “Rocq” may refer to the same project in different materials, but commands, package names, and compatibility instructions still need to match the version your project expects. The cited project repository supplies installation and documentation links, but it does not provide a single consolidated hardware matrix in the available material.

What Isabelle/HOL is and when it fits

A generic assistant with a higher-order-logic instance

Isabelle’s official project description is concise: “Isabelle is a generic proof assistant.” Isabelle/HOL is its higher-order-logic instance. Its LCF-style architecture and theory language produce a workflow that differs from Lean and Coq’s dependent-type approach. You build structured theories, invoke automation suited to HOL, and use Isabelle’s document-oriented infrastructure to organize the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Higher-order logic is not simply a different spelling for dependent type theory. Definitions, polymorphism, induction, simplification, automation, and the way executable material is represented can feel substantially different. A learner moving from Lean or Coq should follow an Isabelle/HOL tutorial rather than infer the workflow from familiar tactic names. Conversely, a team already using HOL theories will usually lose time by forcing its development into a dependent-type assistant without a specific technical reason.

Automation and the theory/document workflow

Isabelle is a strong fit when repeatable automation and structured theory documents are first-class requirements. Its ecosystem includes current releases, documentation, mailing lists, and the Archive of Formal Proofs, where completed formal developments can be published and reused. Those resources matter to organizations that need a reviewable body of theories and a stable process for maintaining large formal documents.

Choose Isabelle/HOL when your course teaches HOL, your existing project uses Isabelle, or your team values its theory and document infrastructure. The fact that another assistant has a larger beginner audience, a different programming model, or a more familiar syntax is not enough to justify abandoning an established Isabelle workflow.

How the three assistants differ in practice

Decision axis Lean Coq/Rocq Isabelle/HOL
Logical foundation Dependent type theory with explicit proof objects. Dependent-type formal proof management. Generic Isabelle architecture; Isabelle/HOL uses higher-order logic and an LCF-style approach.
Proof style Terms and tactics in a prover that is also a functional language. Definitions, executable algorithms, and machine-checked proofs in a Coq/Rocq development. Structured HOL theories with Isabelle’s proof and document workflow.
Automation and metaprogramming Strong metaprogramming support and a Mathlib-centered tactic workflow. Automation is closely tied to the Coq/Rocq ecosystem and the project’s existing scripts. Mature automation integrated with Isabelle/HOL theory development.
Library fit Mathlib is the key shared mathematical library; check its version and API conventions. Existing Coq/Rocq libraries and project-specific developments are often the decisive asset. The Isabelle ecosystem and Archive of Formal Proofs support structured HOL developments.
Programming model Full functional programming language alongside theorem proving. Definitions and executable algorithms are core stated uses; certified-programming workflows are a major fit. Choose based on the project’s Isabelle/HOL theory and document needs rather than assuming a Lean-style programming model.
Editor and documents Modern user interface, community tooling, browser trials, API documentation, and editor integrations supplied by the Lean ecosystem. Use the editor and build tooling selected by the Coq/Rocq project; compatibility with its scripts matters more than a generic editor preference. Document and theory infrastructure is a defining part of the Isabelle workflow.
Learning resources Official FAQ, Lean 4 tutorial, Mathlib tutorials and API documentation, browser trial, Zulip, and GitHub. Official repository installation and documentation links, plus the course or project resources that match your version. Official tutorials, documentation, mailing lists, releases, and the Archive of Formal Proofs.
Platform support Community installation guidance covers Linux, Windows, and macOS, with a browser trial. Follow the installation instructions for the exact distribution and version used by the project. Official bundles are available for Linux, Windows, and macOS.
Existing-code compatibility Best when the project is new or already uses Lean and Mathlib. Best when the project already uses Coq/Rocq proofs, libraries, and certified-programming tooling. Best when the project already uses Isabelle/HOL theories, documents, and automation.

Choose by your actual starting point

You are starting a new mathematics project

Start with Lean if the theorems you need are represented in Mathlib or close to areas that Mathlib documents. First verify imports, theorem names, notation, and the supported Lean version with a small prototype. The objective is not to prove a toy theorem in isolation; it is to confirm that your intended definitions connect cleanly to the shared library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Isabelle/HOL can be the better new-project choice when the planned work is naturally a structured HOL theory and the team already knows Isabelle’s automation. Coq/Rocq can be the better choice when the project’s mathematical development is also a certified executable program or when your advisors and collaborators have an established Coq base.

You need executable, certified software

Compare the assistants through the implementation you must deliver, not through abstract proof syntax. Coq/Rocq explicitly targets definitions, executable algorithms, and machine-checked proofs, making it a strong candidate for an existing certified-programming pipeline. Lean is attractive when the same team wants functional programming and theorem proving in one language. Isabelle/HOL should be selected when its theory/document workflow and the project’s existing HOL automation are more valuable than adopting a different programming environment.

You are following a class, book, or supervisor

Use the assistant named by the course or supervisor unless you have a specific reason and support for deviating. Exercises depend on exact syntax, libraries, tactics, and version assumptions. A Lean course may assume Mathlib conventions; a Coq/Rocq course may assume its proof scripts and package layout; an Isabelle course may assume HOL theory syntax and Isabelle’s document tools. Switching assistants halfway through usually creates more translation work than learning value.

You inherited an existing repository

Keep the repository’s assistant for the first maintenance milestone. Record its compiler or prover version, package manager, library revisions, editor setup, and continuous-integration command. Replacing the assistant should be a separately justified project with a proof-of-concept, not an incidental consequence of installing a newer tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You have narrowed the choice to two

Build the same small but representative exercise in both systems. Include one definition, a nontrivial theorem, an example that exercises automation, and a library import similar to the real project. Measure the time needed to get a clean build, the clarity of error messages, the quality of editor feedback, the amount of manual proof code, and how easily a teammate can review and modify the result. This is a decision experiment for your context, not a general benchmark of the assistants.

Installation, versions, and hardware

Lean setup

Lean Community provides a browser trial and installation instructions for Linux, Windows, and macOS, along with tutorials, API documentation, Zulip, and GitHub support. Use the browser trial to test a theorem and an import before changing your workstation. Then install the version required by your project, initialize the project’s declared Mathlib revision, and run its build command before writing substantial proofs.

The Lean 4 tutorial identifies Apache 2.0 licensing and describes foundations based on the Calculus of Constructions with inductive types. Licensing is therefore not normally a purchase barrier; your obligations still include reading the license and the licenses of any libraries or generated components you distribute.

Isabelle setup and Isabelle2025-2

Isabelle’s current site lists Isabelle2025-2, released in January 2026, with downloadable packages, documentation, mailing lists, and free/open-source distribution. Official bundles cover Linux, Windows, and macOS. Download the release required by your theory or course rather than assuming that the newest release is compatible with every older session image.

Coq/Rocq setup

Use the installation and documentation links supplied by the official Coq/Rocq repository, then match the exact version, package set, and editor configuration used by your project. The available project material does not state a consolidated hardware matrix, so size a machine from your repository’s build times and parallel workload rather than copying a number from another assistant.

For all three systems, put the tool version and library revisions under explicit project control. A proof that works only because a global installation happens to contain a particular package is difficult to reproduce and expensive to debug.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing on popularity claims

No comparable primary statistic establishes market share, learner counts, library size across all three systems, or relative beginner success. Treat claims that one assistant is universally the most popular or easiest with caution. Concrete evidence from your target library, course, supervisor, and repository is more useful than an unsupported ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing syntax with portability

Similar words such as “lemma,” “tactic,” or “automation” do not make proof scripts interchangeable. The logical foundations and kernel interfaces differ, and library theorem statements are assistant-specific. Plan a migration as a re-formalization effort with validation, not as a search-and-replace exercise.

Ignoring version compatibility

A tutorial, Mathlib import, Isabelle theory, or Coq/Rocq package may assume a particular release. Before debugging your proof, confirm the assistant version, package manager lockfile, library revision, and editor extension. Keep a minimal compiling example in the repository so an upgrade can be tested before the full development is rebuilt.

Starting with a toy that hides the real workload

A tiny arithmetic theorem can make every assistant look equally suitable. Include the project’s real data structures, a representative library import, the intended automation, and at least one executable definition in your trial. The right assistant is the one that reduces friction on the work you will actually maintain.

Underestimating people and documentation

Formalization is collaborative maintenance. Count the tutorials your team can follow, the support channel it can use, the quality of API documentation, and the number of colleagues who can review a proof. Lean offers a browser trial, tutorials, API documentation, Zulip, and GitHub; Isabelle offers documentation, mailing lists, releases, and the Archive of Formal Proofs; Coq/Rocq’s repository provides installation and documentation links. Use the resources that match your project’s version.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify the non-negotiable asset. Is it Mathlib coverage, a Coq/Rocq codebase, an Isabelle/HOL theory, a certified-programming pipeline, or a course and supervisor?
  2. Write down the required logic and output. State whether the project needs dependent types, higher-order logic, executable algorithms, generated programs, structured theory documents, or only machine-checked propositions.
  3. Prototype one representative slice. Recreate a real definition, import the library area you need, prove a meaningful property, and run the intended build.
  4. Lock the environment. Record the assistant release, library revisions, operating-system assumptions, editor integration, and build command.
  5. Evaluate collaboration. Ask another contributor to read and modify the prototype. Note the quality of diagnostics, automation predictability, and review burden.
  6. Choose the lower-risk long-term path. Prefer the assistant that preserves existing proofs and libraries or offers a clearly demonstrated advantage for the new work.

Bottom line

Lean is the strongest general starting point for Mathlib-centered mathematics and for learners who want a theorem prover that is also a functional programming language. Coq/Rocq is the safer choice for established dependent-type and certified-programming developments. Isabelle/HOL is the right fit for higher-order-logic projects that benefit from Isabelle’s mature automation and structured theory/document infrastructure. When the evidence is otherwise close, build the same small exercise in each candidate and let library fit, version stability, editor feedback, and team expertise decide.
