Use .closest(selector) to find the first matching element at or above a starting element, including the starting element itself. Use .parents(selector) to collect matching ancestors above it; it can return several. If you need only the immediate parent, use .parent().
How .closest() and .parents() differ

The key difference is whether you want the nearest match or all matching ancestors. jQuery’s .closest() documentation describes testing the element itself before traversing upward. The .parents() documentation describes traversing upward from the parent and optionally filtering the ancestors by selector.
Choose the method for the result you need
Find the nearest matching element with .closest()
Use .closest() when you need the first element that matches a selector. It tests the current element first and stops as soon as it finds a match. If the starting element itself matches, that element is returned.
const item = $(event.target).closest("li");This is useful in delegated event handling: a click may originate on a nested element, while your code needs the containing list item. The jQuery documentation demonstrates this pattern in its delegated click example.

Collect matching ancestors with .parents()
Use .parents(selector) when you want every ancestor that matches, rather than just the nearest one. For example, if nested elements at multiple levels match the selector, all matching ancestors can be included in the result.
const containers = $(element).parents(".container");Because .parents() starts above the element, it will not return the starting element even when that element matches the selector.

Move up exactly one level with .parent()
Use .parent() when the immediate parent is the only element you need. You can pass a selector to include that parent only if it matches. See the jQuery .parent() documentation.
const parent = $(element).parent(".container");Example: a nested element inside a list item
Given this markup:
<li><b>Label</b></li>Starting from the <b> element, $("b").closest("li") returns the containing <li>. In contrast, $("b").parents("li") searches above the <b> and returns any matching list-item ancestors. If the starting element were itself an <li>, .closest("li") could return that element, while .parents("li") would search only above it.

What to know when there are multiple starting elements
Do not assume each input element maps to exactly one output item. A starting element can have no matching ancestor, and several starting elements can lead to overlapping ancestors. jQuery documents ordering and duplicate handling for these traversal methods: .closest() results are in document order; .parents() lists ancestors from the immediate parent outward and, for multiple starting elements, uses its documented reverse-order behavior and removes duplicates. API version notes
The selector form of .closest() has been available since jQuery 1.3. Its context argument was added in 1.4, and the element and jQuery-selection signatures were added in 1.6. The array-of-selectors signature was deprecated in 1.7 and removed in 1.8; it is not a current API option. These version notes are listed on the official .closest() reference. Compatibility behavior across every jQuery release or browser is not established here, so check the documentation for the specific version your project uses.
