Choose the JBL PartyBox Stage 320 for a hosted party where powerful sound, wheels, lighting, karaoke, and microphone or guitar inputs matter most. Choose the JBL Boombox 4 for poolside, beach, camping, or mixed-weather use where a much lighter carry, stronger water protection, and longer battery life matter more.

These are different kinds of party speakers rather than direct substitutes. The Stage 320 is a rollable event speaker with a published 240 W output figure and party controls. The Boombox 4 is a compact, carry-handle speaker rated IP68, with up to 34 hours of claimed playtime. The right choice depends on whether your priority is event impact or easy, weather-resistant mobility.

JBL PartyBox Stage 320 vs. Boombox 4 at a glance

The comparison below uses the current specifications JBL publishes for the PartyBox Stage 320 and Boombox 4. “Up to” battery figures are maximum claims, not guaranteed runtimes at every volume or with every type of music.

Is the PartyBox Stage 320 louder than the Boombox 4?

JBL publishes a 240 W output figure for the PartyBox Stage 320. For the Boombox 4, JBL publishes separate RMS figures: two 65 W RMS woofers and two 40 W RMS tweeters when operating in AC mode. Those figures are not expressed in the same format, so adding or comparing them does not produce a reliable loudness ranking.

There is also no controlled, head-to-head loudness measurement in the official material. A wattage number describes an electrical output specification under a manufacturer’s stated conditions; it does not by itself tell you how loud a speaker will sound at a particular distance, how evenly it will cover a yard, or how much distortion it will produce at maximum volume.

For a party decision, the Stage 320 is the safer choice when you need the product JBL positions as the higher-impact event speaker. Its 240 W specification is accompanied by a larger party-focused design, wheels, a lightshow, and microphone or guitar inputs. That combination is more relevant to a hosted event than a wattage comparison alone.

The Boombox 4 can still be a strong choice for a small or medium gathering, especially when the speaker will be close to listeners. Its advantages are not a published claim that it beats the Stage 320 for maximum output; they are its lower weight, IP68 protection, and substantially longer claimed battery life.

Party features: where the Stage 320 pulls ahead

Lightshow and event atmosphere

The PartyBox Stage 320 includes a lightshow, making it a visual part of a hosted event rather than only an audio source. This is useful for birthdays, indoor gatherings, dance areas, and backyard parties after dark. The lightshow can add atmosphere without requiring separate lighting equipment, although you should position the speaker where the light effects are visible without blocking the drivers.

Karaoke and live inputs

The Stage 320 lists dual microphone/guitar inputs and karaoke functionality. That matters if guests will sing, make announcements, or play a guitar through the speaker. Two inputs let you accommodate, for example, a microphone and a guitar at the same time, subject to the controls and levels available on the unit.

Plan the physical setup before guests arrive. Put the speaker on a stable surface or clear floor area, keep microphone cables away from the wheels and walking paths, and leave access to the controls. Test each microphone or instrument at a moderate level before the party starts so you can identify cable, gain, or feedback problems while the room is quiet.

What the Boombox 4 does not list

JBL’s official Boombox 4 listing includes USB-C, Auracast, and AI Sound Boost, but it does not list karaoke functionality, microphone or guitar inputs, or a lightshow. Do not buy it expecting the Stage 320’s event controls. You can still play a karaoke track from a phone or another source, but the speaker’s published feature set does not establish that a microphone can be connected directly for live vocals.

Outdoor and weather use

Boombox 4: the clear protection advantage

The Boombox 4 is rated IP68 waterproof and dustproof. That is materially stronger protection than the Stage 320’s IPX4 splashproof rating. IPX4 indicates resistance to splashing water; it is not a submersion rating and does not establish protection against dust.

IP68 makes the Boombox 4 the better fit for a pool deck, beach, campsite, or event where dust and accidental water exposure are realistic. Waterproof does not mean you should deliberately use any speaker underwater, leave connectors open, or ignore the manufacturer’s care instructions. Dry the exterior and check that covers are properly closed before exposing the unit to water.

Stage 320: suitable for splashes, not submersion

JBL describes the PartyBox Stage 320 as IPX4 splashproof and says a little rain should not stop the fun. Treat that as protection from light splashes or a brief shower, not permission to place the speaker beside a pool where it could be knocked in, leave it in sustained heavy rain, or hose it down.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use the Stage 320 outdoors, put it under a covered area, keep it off wet ground, and move it inside when weather worsens. Its wheels make relocation easier, but they do not change the IPX4 rating.

Portability and setup space

Moving the PartyBox Stage 320

The Stage 320 weighs 16.5 kg (36.38 lb). JBL equips it with a telescopic handle and wide wheels, so it is designed to roll across a suitable path rather than be carried for long distances. It works well when you can move it from a car to a patio, lawn, or indoor room without stairs or rough terrain.

Check the route before the event. Stairs, deep gravel, sand, and narrow doorways can turn a wheeled speaker into a two-person lift. Keep the handle fully retracted when the speaker is operating in a crowded area, and park it where the wheels cannot roll unexpectedly.

Carrying the Boombox 4

The Boombox 4 weighs 5.89 kg (13 lb) and uses a carry-handle form factor. That is roughly one-third the Stage 320’s weight, making it much easier to lift into a car, carry to a beach or campsite, and reposition during a gathering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The lighter design is especially valuable when the speaker must be carried over distance rather than rolled a few metres. If one person will handle all transport, or if the destination has steps and uneven ground, the Boombox 4’s weight advantage can outweigh the Stage 320’s higher-impact party features.

Battery life and charging

Boombox 4 runtime

JBL claims up to 34 hours for the Boombox 4, with the figure including Playtime Boost mode. That is a maximum manufacturer claim; louder playback, bass-heavy content, wireless activity, and other conditions can reduce actual runtime. Even with that qualification, the published figure gives the Boombox 4 a major endurance advantage for all-day outdoor use.

Stage 320 runtime

JBL claims up to 18 hours for the PartyBox Stage 320. As with the Boombox, volume and content affect the result. An 18-hour maximum is enough for many parties, but it leaves less margin for a full weekend away from an outlet than the Boombox 4’s 34-hour claim.

Replaceable batteries

Both models list replaceable batteries. That can extend useful ownership because a worn battery does not automatically make the entire speaker unusable. Verify the exact replacement part for your model and region before buying; compatibility, availability, and installation instructions are not established by the headline specifications alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charging time

JBL lists a 3-hour charging time for both speakers. Charge the unit fully before leaving for an outdoor event, and bring the appropriate power cable if an outlet will be available. A replacement battery is useful only if it is the correct part and can be changed safely according to JBL’s instructions.

Inputs, playback, and wireless expansion

Stage 320 connections

The Stage 320 lists a 3.5 mm input plus dual microphone/guitar inputs. The 3.5 mm connection is useful for a wired audio source, while the dedicated mic or guitar connections support the speaker’s karaoke and live-performance role.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For a simple party setup, pair the music source wirelessly, connect a microphone to one input, and reserve the second input for another performer or instrument. Keep the music source’s volume high enough for a clean signal, then adjust the speaker’s output and microphone levels to avoid sudden jumps.

Boombox 4 connections and features

The Boombox 4 lists USB-C, Auracast, and AI Sound Boost. The official feature listing does not identify direct microphone or guitar inputs, so it is better suited to playing music from a phone or other source than to hosting live karaoke.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB-C is also relevant when planning cables and charging accessories, but the published specification here does not establish every USB-C function or power-delivery capability. Use the supplied or manufacturer-approved charging arrangement rather than assuming any USB-C cable can provide the same result.

Auracast linking

Both speakers support Auracast for wireless linking. JBL’s PartyBox Stage 320 release notes document Auracast Assistant in version 3.4.0 dated March 18, 2026. Update the speaker and companion software, if required, before the event; attempting a first-time multi-speaker setup while guests are waiting adds avoidable risk.

Auracast support does not mean every Bluetooth speaker can join the same group. Confirm that the additional speakers support the required Auracast mode and follow the current JBL pairing sequence. Keep linked units within a practical wireless range and avoid placing one behind dense walls or large metal objects.

Which speaker fits common party situations?

Large backyard or house party

Choose the PartyBox Stage 320 when the speaker is the center of the event. Its published 240 W output, lightshow, karaoke function, and dual mic/guitar inputs address the needs of a hosted party better than the Boombox 4’s travel-oriented feature set. The wheels help you move it between rooms or from a vehicle to the yard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect it from prolonged rain and keep it away from pool edges because IPX4 is splashproof, not waterproof. If the route includes stairs or the event requires frequent lifting, account for its 16.5 kg weight before committing.

Poolside gathering

Choose the Boombox 4. Its IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating gives you far more protection against accidental splashes, wet surfaces, and dust than the Stage 320’s IPX4 rating. Its 5.89 kg weight also makes it easier to reposition around loungers or carry indoors if weather changes.

Water resistance does not eliminate common-sense precautions. Keep charging ports closed, do not deliberately submerge the speaker, and follow JBL’s drying and maintenance guidance after exposure to water.

Beach, camping, or day-long outdoor use

The Boombox 4 is the practical choice when the speaker must be carried and run for long periods. Its 13 lb weight is manageable for one person, and its up-to-34-hour Playtime Boost claim provides more runtime headroom than the Stage 320’s up-to-18-hour claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sand and grit are still worth managing even with an IP68 rating. Keep the speaker out of loose sand when possible, close all covers, and clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions rather than forcing debris into ports.

Karaoke, announcements, or guitar

Choose the Stage 320. It is the only model in this comparison whose published features include karaoke and dual microphone/guitar inputs. The Boombox 4 can play backing tracks, but its official listing does not establish direct live-input support.

Small indoor gathering

Either model can work, but the decision is about priorities. The Boombox 4 is easier to place on a shelf or carry between rooms, while the Stage 320 supplies the event-focused lighting and inputs. If you will not use karaoke or the lightshow, the Boombox 4 avoids carrying 16.5 kg for features you do not need.

One speaker for mixed indoor and outdoor use

Start with the harshest environment you expect. Frequent pool, beach, or camping use favors the Boombox 4 because of IP68 protection and longer claimed battery life. Mostly indoor parties with occasional covered outdoor use favor the Stage 320 if output, karaoke, and lighting are central to the experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to set up the PartyBox Stage 320 for a hosted party

  1. Choose a safe position. Place the speaker where its drivers face the main listening area, the wheels cannot roll, and guests will not trip over cables.
  2. Charge before guests arrive. A full charge avoids an early interruption. JBL lists a 3-hour charging time.
  3. Connect the music source. Pair the primary source wirelessly or use the 3.5 mm input for a wired source.
  4. Connect performers. Plug microphones or a guitar into the dual mic/guitar inputs, then set their levels while the room is quiet.
  5. Test for feedback. Keep microphones behind the speaker’s main sound path and lower the microphone level if a whistle develops.
  6. Set the lightshow. Aim the light effects toward the party area, but keep controls accessible and avoid positioning the unit where bright effects could disturb neighbors.
  7. Check weather. Keep the speaker covered and off wet ground; IPX4 does not permit submersion or sustained heavy rain.
  8. Prepare a backup plan. Keep the charging cable available and know where the speaker can be moved if conditions change.

How to set up the Boombox 4 outdoors

  1. Charge fully. The listed charging time is 3 hours. Start with a full battery when an outlet may not be available.
  2. Inspect covers and ports. Close them correctly before exposing the unit to water or dust.
  3. Place it securely. Use a stable, shaded location where the carry handle will not be struck and the speaker cannot slide into a pool or down a slope.
  4. Connect the playback source. Use the supported wireless connection or USB-C-related setup described in the current JBL instructions.
  5. Select the desired sound mode. Playtime Boost is included in JBL’s up-to-34-hour claim, so use it when endurance is more important than maximum output.
  6. Link additional speakers only after testing. If using Auracast, update compatible units and complete pairing before guests arrive.
  7. Manage water exposure. IP68 is a strong protection rating, but do not deliberately submerge the speaker or charge it while wet.
  8. Clean after use. Remove dust or sand using JBL’s recommended method and dry the exterior before storage.

Important limitations when comparing the specifications

  • Output figures are not a loudness test. The Stage 320’s 240 W figure and the Boombox 4’s separate woofer/tweeter RMS figures use different presentation formats. They cannot prove which speaker is louder in every room or yard.
  • Battery claims are maximums. “Up to 18 hours” and “up to 34 hours” depend on volume, content, and operating mode. Playtime Boost is part of the Boombox 4’s 34-hour claim.
  • IP ratings have different meanings. IPX4 is splash resistance; IP68 is the materially stronger waterproof and dustproof rating. Do not describe the Stage 320 as waterproof.
  • Weights affect real transport. Wheels help the Stage 320 roll on suitable surfaces, but 16.5 kg remains a substantial lift. The Boombox 4 is 5.89 kg.
  • Published features are not interchangeable. The Stage 320 lists karaoke, a lightshow, and dual mic/guitar inputs. The Boombox 4’s official listing does not list those features.
  • Availability is regional. Prices, inventory, replacement-battery stock, and retailer availability can change by country and date. Check the current local listing before purchase.

Ownership checklist

  • Confirm which model you are buying: this comparison covers the JBL PartyBox Stage 320 and JBL Boombox 4, not every product carrying the PartyBox or Boombox name.
  • Verify the exact replacement battery part for your regional model before relying on replaceability as a long-term plan.
  • Keep charging cables and microphone or guitar cables labeled so event setup is quick.
  • Store the Stage 320 dry and protected from prolonged weather despite its splashproof rating.
  • Close the Boombox 4’s covers and follow cleaning guidance after exposure to water, dust, or sand.
  • Update firmware and test Auracast linking before a multi-speaker event, especially if using the Stage 320 with software that supports Auracast Assistant version 3.4.0 or later documentation dated March 18, 2026.

Verdict

The JBL PartyBox Stage 320 is better for a party when “party” means a hosted event with noticeable output, lighting, karaoke, announcements, or live guitar. Its 240 W manufacturer-stated output, event features, wheels, and dual mic/guitar inputs justify choosing it despite the 16.5 kg weight, 18-hour maximum claim, and IPX4 splashproof limitation.

The JBL Boombox 4 is better when the party moves: poolside, beach, campsite, or any place where one person must carry the speaker and weather protection matters. At 5.89 kg, with an IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating and up to 34 hours of claimed playtime including Playtime Boost, it is the more practical outdoor companion. It gives up the Stage 320’s published karaoke, lightshow, and live-input features in exchange for endurance and durability.
