Bitchat is a messaging app announced by Jack Dorsey in July 2025. It can send messages over Bluetooth LE mesh without internet when nearby Bitchat devices relay them; it also supports internet-connected messaging through Nostr relays. Its offline capability is therefore local and conditional—not a way to message anywhere without infrastructure.
What is Bitchat?
Bitchat is an open-source messaging project built around two ways to carry messages: a local Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) mesh and, when internet access is available, Nostr relays. Dorsey announced the project in early July 2025. After a short beta, the iOS app arrived on the App Store on July 28, 2025, according to 9to5Mac’s launch report.
The project repositories link to Apple and Google app stores, but a store link does not guarantee that the app is available in every country. The main Bitchat repository and the Android repository describe the current project and its platform-specific details.
How does Bitchat work without internet?
In mesh mode, phones discover nearby devices over Bluetooth LE and can pass messages onward through other participating Bitchat devices. Each device in that chain acts as a relay. The project states a maximum of seven hops, but that is a documented technical limit, not a guaranteed delivery distance or a measurement of real-world performance.

- Off-grid communication without cell service: Send and receive messages beyond cell-tower coverage using Meshtastic's LoRa mesh network. Ideal for hiking, outdoor adventures, events, emergencies, and team coordination when cellular networks are unavailable.
- Compact Hardware with Integrated GPS and LoRa: Features an ESP32-S3 MCU, integrated GPS support, 8 MB of RAM, 16 MB of flash storage, a 3300 mAh rechargeable battery, USB-C charging, a full QWERTY keyboard, an external 915 MHz LoRa antenna, and a lightweight 185 g PETG enclosure designed for portable off-grid communication.
- True standalone device, no phone required: The built-in physical keyboard and touchscreen let you send messages, manage channels, view alerts, and access GPS data without a phone, SIM card, or ongoing subscription.
- 32GB SD card with preloaded U.S. maps: Includes a 32GB micro SD card preloaded with detailed United States maps up to zoom level 13, providing reliable navigation and location awareness even in remote or low-connectivity areas.
- Long-range LoRa + integrated GPS: Low-power LoRa technology enables long-range messaging and location sharing, while the integrated GPS helps keep your team aligned and visible on the same map in off-grid environments.
Whether a message gets through depends on there being enough participating devices in range to form a working path. If there are no suitable relays between sender and recipient, Bluetooth mesh cannot bridge the gap. The project does not establish a fixed range, so it is not accurate to describe Bitchat as offering universal long-distance messaging without internet.
Which features need an internet connection?
Bitchat also uses Nostr relays for internet-connected messaging. Its location channels are organized around geographic areas and require an internet connection, so those channels are not offline mesh chats.
The project describes automatic transport selection and message queuing: Bluetooth is preferred when available, Nostr can be used when Bluetooth is unavailable, and messages can wait when neither transport is available. In practical terms, Bitchat combines an offline-capable local mode with online messaging; being able to use one mode without internet does not make every feature work offline.

Does Bitchat require an account or phone number?
The project says Bitchat does not require an account or phone number. However, its README also describes a persistent per-device identifier derived from the identity key used in mesh mode. Account-free use should not be confused with anonymity or with having no device identifier.
What does the Android version add?
The Android repository documents Bluetooth LE mesh, Noise Protocol sessions for private mesh messages, Wi-Fi Aware transport on supported devices, and a foreground service subject to Android execution limits. These are features described by the project, not independent measurements of how reliably they perform across phones.
The project also notes that radio-level Bluetooth behavior needs assessment on real devices. The available documentation does not establish a quantified range or head-to-head performance advantage over other messaging or mesh apps.

Is Bitchat secure?
Security claims and independent assurance are different things. Bitchat describes end-to-end encryption mechanisms, but that description alone does not establish that the software has been independently reviewed, operates safely in every situation, or is suitable for high-risk communication.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn a July 9, 2025 report, TechCrunch quoted a launch-period warning attributed to the project’s GitHub page: “This software has not received external security review and may contain vulnerabilities and does not necessarily meet its stated security goals. Do not use it for production use, and do not rely on its security whatsoever until it has been reviewed.” The report also described a concern raised by security researcher Alex Radocea about possible identity impersonation involving Bitchat’s Favorites system. Those are launch-period statements, not proof of the app’s current security status; check the project’s current security documentation and release information for updates.
For safety-critical communication, do not treat the offline mesh design or encryption claims as a guarantee that messages will arrive securely or that identities cannot be impersonated.
Where can you download Bitchat?
The project repositories link to the Apple App Store and Google Play, and the Android repository describes an implementation intended to be compatible with iOS for mesh communication. Check the relevant store listing in your country for current availability and supported devices; repository links do not establish universal regional access.
