- Check the seller. Prefer Microsoft or a retailer whose authorization and identity you can verify. Microsoft maintains a distributor directory; its existence does not by itself verify a particular online listing.
- Confirm edition and platform. Make sure the listing names the Office edition and specifies compatibility with your PC or Mac.
- Read the device and transfer terms. Check how many devices the license covers and whether it can be transferred if you replace a computer.
- Understand activation before paying. Confirm how the license is delivered and activated, and whether the seller provides a valid route to Microsoft account or product-key activation.
How to assess a very cheap Office key

If an Office installation does not activate, use Microsoft’s activation and unlicensed-product troubleshooting guidance. An activation problem is not, by itself, proof of why a seller’s key failed; contact the seller and follow Microsoft’s stated recovery steps rather than buying another key immediately.
