Hermes Agent can be run safely in the cloud, but it is not automatically safe simply because it runs in a hosted container. Safety depends on the execution backend, mounted files, approval mode, forwarded credentials, connected accounts, installed skills and hooks, persistence settings, and the model or integration provider handling your data. Hermes Cloud gives each agent a dedicated hardened container, regional placement and persistent or ephemeral storage options. Those controls reduce blast radius; they do not turn an autonomous tool-using agent into a zero-trust system.
This guide explains what Hermes can reach, how commands and files are constrained, what Nous says it collects, how Privacy Mode changes inference-payload handling, and what deleting a cloud instance actually removes. It also provides a deployment decision table and a concrete hardening sequence.
What are Hermes Agent and Hermes Cloud?
Hermes Agent is Nous Research’s autonomous agent software. Its execution backends include a local machine, Docker, SSH, Modal, Daytona and Vercel Sandbox. Hermes Cloud is the Nous-hosted form: you create an instance from a dashboard, choose a size and region, and receive an isolated container for that agent. The service is designed to stay online, run scheduled automations and scale to zero while idle.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The important distinction is between the model and the agent runtime. A model proposes actions, but Hermes can execute shell commands, write or patch files, call tools and interact with connected services. Your effective trust boundary therefore includes the host or container, every mounted directory, every environment variable passed to child processes, each skill or MCP server, profile hooks, account tokens and the provider that receives inference data.

How is Hermes’s trust model organized?
Nous documents eight defensive layers. They address different failure modes, so no single layer should be treated as a complete authorization system.
User authorization
Allowlists and direct-message pairing restrict which people or channels may talk to an agent. This limits who can submit instructions before command-level controls are even involved. Review these lists whenever a bot is moved between a private workspace and a shared team channel.
Dangerous-command approval
Commands that match dangerous-operation rules can require explicit approval. Hermes offers smart, manual and off modes; the behavior and the risks are different, as described below.
File-write safety
Denylist controls and an optional write sandbox apply to write_file and patch operations. These controls are separate from shell-command approval, so configure both when the agent handles source code or configuration.
Container isolation
Docker, Singularity, Modal, Daytona and Vercel Sandbox can put execution behind a container or cloud boundary. Isolation reduces access to the host, but a mounted directory or forwarded secret intentionally crosses that boundary.
MCP credential filtering
Subprocesses do not automatically inherit every secret available to the gateway. Skills and explicit environment-passthrough declarations determine which credentials can enter a child process.
Context-file scanning
Project files such as AGENTS.md, SOUL.md and .cursorrules are scanned for prompt-injection patterns and invisible Unicode. Scanning helps identify hostile instructions embedded in files, but it is not a substitute for reviewing files before an agent reads them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCross-session isolation
Sessions are designed not to access one another’s data or state. Cron storage paths are hardened against traversal so that a scheduled job cannot simply use a path trick to reach another session’s storage.

Input sanitization
Working-directory parameters are validated to reduce shell-injection risk. Keep this layer in perspective: an approved command, an over-broad mount or a deliberately forwarded credential can still produce consequential results.
Which Hermes backend provides the right isolation?
There is no universally safest backend. Select the boundary you can administer and audit, then minimize what crosses it.
| Backend | Isolation boundary | Who controls infrastructure? | Best fit | Main exposure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local execution | Your operating-system account and host | You | Experiments with non-sensitive files | A mistake can affect the workstation, mounted drives and local credentials |
| Docker | Container with Linux capability and resource restrictions | You | Production gateways on an administered host | Host mounts, Docker socket access or forwarded secrets can defeat the intended boundary |
| SSH | Remote machine and its account permissions | You or the machine owner | Using a separately hardened server | SSH keys, network reachability and remote filesystem permissions become part of the trust decision |
| Modal, Daytona or Vercel Sandbox | Provider-managed cloud sandbox | Shared provider controls, with your configuration | Disposable or scalable remote execution | Provider terms, outbound networking and any persisted workspace must be reviewed |
| Hermes Cloud | Nous-hosted, dedicated hardened container per agent | Nous operates the service | Managed always-on agents and scheduled automations | Cloud account access, persistence, regional availability and forwarded credentials |
| Business or Enterprise deployment | Team-isolated service or customer-controlled infrastructure, depending on contract | Nous or your organization | Centralized identity, isolation and contractual controls | Features such as SSO, SLAs and customer infrastructure are tailored options; confirm the written terms |
For a production gateway, Nous’s security guidance recommends Docker, Modal, Daytona or Vercel Sandbox. Hermes Cloud is convenient when you want Nous to operate the environment, while a customer-controlled deployment gives your organization more direct control over network, storage and identity policy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How does the Hermes Cloud container limit damage?
The documented Docker configuration drops all Linux capabilities, adds back only selected capabilities needed for mounted-directory ownership, enables no-new-privileges, caps processes at 256, and uses size-limited tmpfs mounts for /tmp and /var/tmp. CPU, memory and disk settings can be selected, helping prevent one agent from consuming unlimited host resources.
Those limits are containment measures, not proof that an operation is harmless. A process inside the container can still damage files that you mount, use network access that you permit, or read a secret you forward. Keep host mounts narrow and task-specific, and do not expose a container-management socket.
What does persistent versus ephemeral storage mean?
In persistent mode, /workspace and /root are kept in a task-specific Hermes sandbox path between sessions. Persistent storage is useful for projects and scheduled jobs, but it means old files, caches and credentials may remain until you remove them.
Ephemeral mode uses tmpfs and loses workspace contents during cleanup. Use it for disposable transformations, testing or jobs where retaining artifacts is not required. Export only the specific result you need, then verify that temporary copies and logs are also removed.

Can Hermes access my files or connected accounts?
Hermes can access whatever its runtime can read and whatever tools you authorize. A cloud container does not grant access to your laptop automatically, but a mounted directory, uploaded file, persistent workspace, skill or connected-account token can make data available to the agent.

| Data or capability | When Hermes can reach it | Safer configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Host files | Only when uploaded, mounted or made available through a remote backend | Mount a dedicated project directory, preferably read-only for analysis jobs |
| Child-process secrets | When a skill declaration, terminal.env_passthrough or Docker allowlist forwards them |
Start with an empty allowlist and add one narrowly scoped variable only when required |
| Google-connected data | When the Google integration is connected and a tool call retrieves it | Use a separate account or least-privilege authorization; disconnect it when no longer needed |
| Other service accounts | When their tokens are installed in a skill, MCP server or environment | Use revocable, low-privilege credentials with short lifetimes where possible |
| Another Hermes session | Not through normal session storage; cross-session isolation is intended to prevent this | Keep scheduled-job paths separate and avoid sharing broad persistent directories |
Review skills, MCP servers, plugins and profile hooks as executable code. Gateway hooks placed under <profile home>/hooks/<name>/ load at gateway startup without a separate prompt, so treat them like operator-owned configuration and audit them before deployment.
How do Hermes command approvals work?
Approval mode determines whether a dangerous command is paused, assessed or allowed without a check. It is a mitigation layer, not a complete permission model.
| Mode | Behavior | Appropriate use | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
smart |
An auxiliary model assesses risk, auto-approves low-risk commands for that command only, auto-denies genuinely dangerous commands and sends uncertain cases to a manual prompt | General interactive use when you want useful automation with intervention on ambiguous actions | Assessment can be wrong; an approved command still has the permissions of its runtime |
manual |
Every command requiring approval prompts a person | Sensitive repositories, production operations and first-time setup | Prompt fatigue can lead operators to approve without inspecting the command |
off |
All safety prompts are disabled; this is equivalent to --yolo |
Deliberately trusted environments such as controlled CI/CD or disposable containers | A malicious or mistaken instruction can run without an approval checkpoint |
Nous’s security documentation states: “Setting approvals.mode: off disables all safety prompts. Use only in trusted environments (CI/CD, containers, etc.).” Cron jobs default to deny when a dangerous command would need approval, which prevents an unattended schedule from waiting forever for a person.

How should I handle credentials and environment variables?
Hermes strips sensitive environment variables from child processes by default. A skill declaration or terminal.env_passthrough entry can allow selected variables, and Docker forwarding uses an explicit allowlist. Code inside the container can read and exfiltrate anything you forward, even when the container itself is isolated.
- Begin with no passthrough. Run the task without secrets and identify the exact operation that fails.
- Choose a dedicated credential. Create a separate key or connected account with only the scopes required for that operation. Avoid administrator tokens and personal master keys.
- Allow one variable or token. Add the smallest explicit entry in the skill or Docker configuration; do not forward an entire environment file.
- Inspect executable extensions. Read the skill, MCP server, plugin and hook code before granting it access to the credential.
- Test and rotate. Verify the task, revoke the credential when finished or rotate it on a regular schedule, and check provider logs for unexpected calls.
Never assume that a secret is safe because it is hidden from the model’s visible transcript. A tool process with the secret in its environment can still read it, send it over the network or write it into a persistent workspace.
What data does Nous process, and what does Privacy Mode change?
Nous’s privacy policy lists prompts, instructions, messages, uploads, inputs, outputs, conversation history, tool interactions, inference requests, API calls, telemetry, usage logs and execution metadata among the data it may collect or process. It may disclose service data to infrastructure, model, analytics, research and other providers as needed for service operation and stated improvement, development, training, evaluation, security and support purposes.

“When Privacy Mode has been enabled, we will not store your inference payloads and will not use such inference payloads for training, product improvement, or support purposes, except to the extent necessary to maintain security, integrity, and operation of the Services, comply with applicable law, or detect, prevent, or investigate fraud, abuse, or security incidents.”
The terms also describe administrative, physical and technical safeguards and limit personnel access except for service delivery, technical problems, legal compulsion or written permission. Privacy Mode should therefore be treated as a reduction in inference-payload use, not as a promise that no operational records exist.
What happens to connected data when I disconnect or delete an instance?
Connected services have their own retention rules. The connected-data guidance says Google credentials are held encrypted by the integration provider until you disconnect the account or delete the account. Content returned by a Google tool may be retained for up to 14 days for retry protection. Conversations containing Google data remain on the device or in the Hermes Cloud instance until you delete them.
Recommended Free Tools
Deleting a Hermes Cloud instance permanently deletes its memories, sessions and skills. Before deletion, export only the records you are authorized to retain, disconnect unused integrations, and remove copied credentials from persistent workspaces. Deletion of the instance does not substitute for revoking a token at the connected service; revoke it there when the integration is no longer trusted.
Which Hermes Cloud size and lifecycle should I choose?
Nous lists daily infrastructure prices for Hermes Cloud, separate from inference and tool charges. The figures below are the 2026 amounts shown by Nous and can change; verify the current dashboard price before committing.
| Instance | Running price | Stopped price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medium | $0.56 per day | $0.03 per day | Daily Hermes Cloud instance charge listed by Nous Research in 2026; inference and tool usage are separate |
| Large | $1.09 per day | $0.03 per day | Daily Hermes Cloud instance charge listed by Nous Research in 2026; inference and tool usage are separate |
Stopping or scaling to zero reduces compute billing while preserving the instance according to the selected lifecycle. It does not automatically erase persistent workspace data, connected-account conversations or account configuration. Use ephemeral mode when retention is unnecessary, and set a deletion schedule for instances created for short-lived jobs.

Use this sequence for a new cloud deployment or a major configuration change.
- Select the boundary. Prefer Docker, Modal, Daytona or Vercel Sandbox for a production gateway, or use Hermes Cloud when managed operation is more valuable than direct infrastructure control.
- Define the workspace. Mount or upload only the project directory needed for the task. Make analysis inputs read-only where possible, and keep secrets outside the workspace.
- Choose storage deliberately. Select ephemeral storage for disposable work. If persistence is required, document what remains in
/workspaceand/root, who can access it, and when it will be deleted. - Set approvals. Start with
manualfor sensitive work orsmartfor routine interactive jobs. Do not useoffmerely to avoid prompts. - Configure authorization. Restrict direct-message pairing and allowlists to named operators or controlled channels.
- Leave credential passthrough empty. Add a single, low-privilege, revocable credential only after identifying a specific requirement.
- Audit executable extensions. Review skills, MCP servers, plugins, hooks and context files for hidden instructions, network calls, file writes and credential use.
- Enable Privacy Mode when appropriate. Confirm that its prospective behavior and operational-metadata exceptions fit your compliance requirements.
- Test with harmless data. Exercise file writes, scheduled jobs, approval prompts, disconnection and cleanup using a disposable project before introducing sensitive information.
- Monitor and retire. Review usage and provider logs, rotate credentials, disconnect unused accounts, and delete the cloud instance when the work is complete.
What can still go wrong, and how do I recover?
An agent edits the wrong files
Stop the session, preserve logs needed for diagnosis, and restore from version control or a known backup. Narrow the mounted directory, switch to read-only inputs for analysis, and keep manual approvals enabled for write operations.

A secret appears in a generated file or log
Revoke or rotate the exposed credential immediately, remove the file from persistent storage and any downstream artifact store, and inspect provider logs for use. Then find which skill, hook or passthrough rule exposed it before restarting the job.
A scheduled job runs after an account is no longer trusted
Disable the cron entry, disconnect the integration at the provider, and delete cached conversation or workspace copies. Cron’s default denial for dangerous commands is helpful, but it does not prevent every read-only tool call or a job that already has valid permissions.
A context file contains an injected instruction
Remove the malicious text, review the file’s history and rotate any credential that the agent could access while reading it. Keep context-file scanning enabled, but treat a scan result as a warning for human review rather than proof that the file is safe.
The container is overwhelmed or a process will not stop
Use the documented CPU, memory, disk and 256-process limits to constrain future jobs. Stop or delete the instance, then inspect scheduled tasks and persistent files before recreating it with smaller resource settings.
What is the practical safety baseline?
For most readers, the defensible baseline is a container or managed cloud sandbox, a narrow workspace, persistent storage only when needed, smart or manual approvals, no environment passthrough by default, separate low-privilege credentials, audited extensions and Privacy Mode when its trade-offs fit the workflow. Treat every forwarded secret, mounted directory and startup hook as an explicit expansion of the trust boundary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does stopping a Hermes Cloud instance delete its files?
No. Stopping or scaling to zero is a compute lifecycle action, not a data-erasure action. Persistent workspace contents and account configuration remain according to the instance settings until you explicitly clean up or delete the instance.
Can Privacy Mode remove data that Hermes already processed?
No. The policy describes Privacy Mode as prospective, so it changes handling after activation. It does not retroactively erase earlier inference payloads, conversations, logs or copies stored in a connected service.
Should I use my personal Google account with Hermes?
A separate account is safer because it limits the impact of an over-broad tool call or leaked token. Grant only the scopes needed, disconnect the account when finished and revoke authorization at Google rather than relying only on deleting the Hermes instance.
Are Hermes skills safe if they come with the agent?
They should be treated as executable extensions, not passive prompts. Read their code and declarations for file access, network calls, subprocess use, hooks and credential requirements before enabling them in a persistent or connected environment.
