Yes. Crash ’n the Boys: Street Challenge is multiplayer, with a maximum of four players. On Nintendo Switch, one console supports 1–4 players locally and the online mode supports 2–4 players. On PlayStation 4, local play supports 1–4 players and network play supports 2–4. The original NES release also supports up to four players in its tournament modes, while Practice is single-player.
Your setup depends on the edition. Local Switch play needs one compatible controller for every participant, and online play uses Nintendo Switch Online. The PS4 online mode requires PlayStation Plus. The original NES version has a different mode structure and should not be confused with the modern digital releases.
Player counts at a glance
| Version | Local or system play | Online or network play | Maximum players | Subscription and equipment notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch (2020 digital release) | 1–4 players on one system | 2–4 players online | Four local and four online | Nintendo lists online play as a Nintendo Switch Online feature. Local multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player. |
| PlayStation 4 | 1–4 players | 2–4 network players | Four local and four network | The PlayStation Store says the full game requires PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. |
| Original NES release | 1–4 players in Normal Tournament and Short Tournament | Not presented as modern internet multiplayer | Four in tournament play | Practice is single-player. Nintendo’s listing describes friends joining through Download Play for 2–4 players. |
The four-player figure is a supported-player limit, not a measurement of how many people are currently playing worldwide. No reliable active-player or sales-population statistic is established by the platform listings.

One Switch: 1–4 players
The Switch product listing labels system play as Single system (1-4). That means as many as four people can play on one console and one copy of the game, using the local multiplayer mode. A single person can also start a local game, so the lower end of the range is one rather than two.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Nintendo’s controller requirement is explicit: “Multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player.” In practice, a four-person session therefore needs four usable controller inputs. Depending on the controllers you already own, that could mean four individual controllers, paired Joy-Con controllers used in the supported configuration, or a mixture of compatible Nintendo controllers. The listing specifically names the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller as compatible; check that every controller is paired and assigned before launching the match.
Local Switch setup
- Pair and charge the controller that each participant will use. Verify that the console recognizes every controller before opening the game.
- Launch Crash ’n the Boys: Street Challenge and choose its local or single-system multiplayer option.
- Have each player join when the game prompts for participants. If fewer than four people are playing, leave the remaining slots unused.
- Choose the desired event or tournament mode and confirm the player assignments before starting.
If the game only detects one participant, the most likely causes are an unpaired controller, a controller being used in an unsupported orientation, or a missing controller for one of the intended players. Re-pair the devices from the Switch controller screen, then return to the game and have players join again.
Online Switch play: 2–4 players
The Switch listing separates online play from single-system play and gives it a range of 2–4 players. Online sessions therefore require at least two participants and can include four in total. A solo player cannot fill an online room alone under the published player range.

What four people need for a Switch session
- One Nintendo Switch console for a single-system game.
- A compatible controller for each player; four players means four controller inputs.
- The game installed on the console.
- For remote play, Nintendo Switch Online access and a second-to-fourth participant, because the online range is 2–4.
Do not count the number of people in the room as the number of controllers. The platform’s limit is four players, but the controller requirement determines whether all four can actually join.
How multiplayer works on PlayStation 4
Local PS4 play: 1–4 players
The PlayStation Store lists 1-4 players for the PS4 version. This is the local range: one person can play alone, while up to four people can share the console in the same room. The store metadata does not specify a special restriction that would reduce local play below four, so the published maximum is four.
Connect and sign in the controllers you plan to use, start the game, and select its local multiplayer option. If a fourth participant cannot join, check that the fourth controller is connected to the console and assigned to a user or guest profile as required by the PS4 system. The store listing gives the player range but does not specify a particular controller model, so use standard compatible PS4 controllers or another device explicitly supported by your console.

Network play is listed as Network Players 2-4. Like the Switch online range, that means a network match needs at least two players and supports no more than four. It is not a five-player mode, and a single-player practice session should not be mistaken for network multiplayer.

The PlayStation Store adds an important condition: “Full game requires PlayStation®Plus membership to access online multiplayer.” Each person who needs online access should have the required PlayStation Plus entitlement on the account and console arrangement being used. Without it, local play remains the appropriate option, but the network mode will not be available as described by the store.
PS4 preparation checklist
- Install the PS4 release and update the console and game through the normal system process.
- Connect a controller for every local participant.
- For network play, confirm that two to four players are available and that the relevant accounts have PlayStation Plus access.
- Use the game’s network option rather than its local option when inviting remote participants.
The listing establishes the supported range and subscription requirement, but it does not state whether a particular network mode is ranked, public, private, or invite-only. Treat those lobby details as edition-specific settings rather than assuming a feature that is not documented in the store metadata.
What the original NES version supports
Normal Tournament
The original instruction manual describes Normal Tournament as a five-event competition for 1–4 players. All five events are included in this format, and the player range allows one person to compete or a group of up to four to share the tournament.
Short Tournament
Short Tournament also supports 1–4 players, but it uses three chosen events instead of all five. This is the four-player option when the group wants a shorter session, not a separate online mode.

Practice
Practice is a one-player mode in the original manual. It is useful for learning an event or testing controls, but it does not add a second, third, or fourth participant.
Download Play wording
Nintendo’s NES listing says friends can join through Download Play for 2–4 players and gives the release a 1–4 player range. Because that wording belongs to the NES listing and the manual describes the tournament modes, interpret it as a feature of that specific Nintendo release or service context. It should not be used as proof that the modern Switch or PS4 editions offer the same sharing method.
Choosing the right mode for your group
| Your situation | Best-supported choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two to four people in one room with a Switch | Single-system play | The Switch supports 1–4 players on one console, provided each player has a compatible controller. |
| Two to four people in different locations on Switch | Online play | The online range is 2–4, and Nintendo Switch Online access is required. |
| Two to four people sharing a PS4 | Local play | The PS4 listing supports 1–4 local players and avoids the network subscription requirement. |
| Two to four people on separate PS4 systems | Network play | The network range is 2–4, with PlayStation Plus required for the full game’s online multiplayer. |
| One person learning the NES version | Practice | The original manual identifies Practice as single-player. |
| A group wanting the full NES competition | Normal Tournament | It supports 1–4 players across all five events. |
| A group wanting a shorter NES competition | Short Tournament | It supports 1–4 players across three selected events. |
Common problems and fixes
The fourth player cannot join locally
First count controller inputs, not people. Nintendo requires one compatible controller per player, so four participants need four recognized inputs. Pair the missing controller, confirm its battery or charge level, and reconnect it before reopening the game’s player-join screen.
The online option is unavailable
On Switch, verify Nintendo Switch Online access for the account being used. On PS4, verify PlayStation Plus, because the store states that the full game requires it for online multiplayer. Also confirm that at least two players are ready; neither platform lists a one-player online range.

A group expects five players
Four is the published maximum on both modern platforms and in the original NES tournament modes. A fifth person can watch, rotate between rounds, or take a turn after another player leaves, but the documented game limit does not provide a five-player slot.
Someone is using Practice and cannot add friends
That behavior matches the original NES manual: Practice is single-player. Switch to Normal Tournament or Short Tournament on the NES version, or select the multiplayer mode on the modern release.
The edition is unclear
Check the platform and product listing before buying or inviting friends. The Switch listing is dated April 16, 2020 and identifies ARC SYSTEM WORKS as publisher. Its player labels are “Single system (1-4)” and “Online (2-4).” The PS4 listing uses “1-4 players” and “Network Players 2-4.” The NES manual’s tournament descriptions are different, so a guide for one edition should not be applied automatically to another.

What the numbers do—and do not—tell you
The player counts describe supported seats in a session: up to four on one Switch, up to four online on Switch, up to four locally on PS4, and up to four over the PS4 network. They do not indicate the number of active users, matchmaking availability, or the size of a current player population. The platform metadata supplied for these editions does not establish those measures.
For a dependable four-person game, the practical constraints are straightforward: select the correct edition, provide four compatible controller inputs for local play, and meet the relevant subscription requirement for online play. If your group is using the NES version, choose one of its tournament modes rather than Practice.
