Google Pixel 8 and newer phones have the longest clearly published software-support guarantee. Google commits to seven years of Android operating-system and security updates, measured from each model’s first availability on the Google Store in the United States. Apple documents a strong support record—major iOS feature updates have reached as far back as six years after a phone’s original release, and some older iPhones continue receiving security patches—but Apple does not publish an equivalent, model-by-model future minimum for current iPhones. That makes Pixel’s seven-year commitment the more definite guarantee. It does not prove that every Pixel will outlast every iPhone in real-world update history, so a fair buying decision still requires checking the exact model and separating major iOS or Android upgrades from security updates.

Which phone has the longer software-support guarantee?

For a published guarantee, the answer is Google Pixel 8 and later. Google’s policy promises seven years of operating-system and security updates. Apple’s June 2024 longevity document reports historical iPhone support reaching as far back as six years for OS feature updates and says it aims to provide critical security updates after a phone can no longer run the newest iOS, but it does not set a matching seven-year minimum for each current iPhone model.

That distinction matters. Google states a forward-looking duration for a defined group of phones. Apple’s figures describe what has happened in the past and the company’s support approach. If you are asking which brand publishes the longer guaranteed period, Pixel wins; if you are asking which specific older handset actually received updates longer, compare that handset’s dated release records rather than relying on the brand-level headline.

Google summarized its policy on October 4, 2023, when Seang Chau, vice president of Engineering, and Shenaz Zack, director of Product Management, said the company was “committing to providing seven years of software support for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, including the latest Android operating system, security updates and ongoing Feature Drops.” The wording is useful because it identifies both the covered products and the kinds of support included. It is not a promise that every Pixel generation receives the same term.

What exactly does Google guarantee for Pixel phones?

Google’s current policy covers Pixel 8 and newer generations with seven years of software support, counted from the date each device first became available on the Google Store in the U.S. The seven-year period includes both Android OS updates and security updates. Google also says Pixel Drops can deliver new or upgraded features during the support period.

The start-date rule is important for anyone buying a phone after launch. A seven-year policy is a calendar window attached to the model, not a new seven-year subscription created at checkout. If two years have passed since first U.S. Google Store availability, only the unelapsed portion of the seven-year period remains under the policy. A retailer’s discount, a refurbished sale, or a change of owner does not reset that date.

Which Pixel generations receive seven years?

The seven-year commitment applies to Pixel 8 and later models listed under Google’s current policy. It is not retroactive to every Pixel phone. Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generations are listed for five years of updates instead, so their support window must be calculated under that shorter policy. The model generation therefore belongs in any product description, comparison chart, or buying recommendation.

When does the Pixel clock start?

The clock starts at first U.S. Google Store availability, not when you buy the phone. A handset purchased two years after launch therefore has fewer than seven years of remaining guaranteed support. Used-phone buyers should identify the model’s original availability date before treating the advertised “seven years” as their personal remaining term. This also prevents a common mistake: comparing a newly launched Pixel with an older Pixel solely by the number printed in a marketing headline.

Are delivery dates identical for everyone?

No. Google notes that updates roll out gradually, and timing can vary by carrier and device. A policy guarantee describes the support Google intends to provide; it does not mean every owner receives every build on the same day or that a carrier will approve an update at the same time as an unlocked device. A delayed rollout is a delivery-timing issue, not automatically the end of the covered support period.

What do Pixel Drops add?

Pixel Drops may contain new or upgraded features in addition to the Android operating-system and security updates counted in the policy. They should be treated as a separate feature channel: receiving a Drop does not change the seven-year starting event, and the existence of Drops does not mean every feature works on every Pixel hardware configuration. Google’s policy establishes the support categories and duration; individual release timing can still vary.

What does Apple guarantee for iPhone software updates?

Apple’s official June 2024 longevity document does not promise a fixed future number of years for every iPhone. Instead, it describes a demonstrated history of providing OS feature updates as far back as six years after a device’s original release and says Apple strives to provide critical security updates even when a product cannot receive the newest OS.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Apple’s wording answers two different questions at once: what the company has achieved historically and what it intends to do for security when hardware falls off the newest-OS compatibility list. Neither statement creates a published expiration date for a particular iPhone on the day it is sold. Buyers should therefore avoid converting “as far back as six years” into “every iPhone is guaranteed six years.”

What is Apple’s six-year figure?

The six-year figure is a historical observation, not a contractual minimum for a newly purchased iPhone. Apple illustrates the reach of its support with an iPhone 6s introduced in 2015 that received an iOS 15 security update released in March 2024. That example shows that security maintenance can continue after the newest major iOS release is no longer available, but it does not establish a guaranteed schedule for another model.

The 2015-to-March-2024 example also illustrates why “support” needs a label. A phone can receive a dated security patch years after launch without receiving the latest feature-rich iOS generation. Conversely, compatibility with a major iOS version does not by itself promise a specified number of future security-only releases.

Why is a security patch not the same as a major iOS upgrade?

A major iOS upgrade changes the operating system generation and may add features, hardware-specific capabilities, and new security architecture. A security release can patch vulnerabilities on an older iOS branch without granting that phone eligibility for the latest iOS. Apple’s compatibility guide and security-release list therefore answer different questions: one shows which models can run a particular iOS generation, while the other records dated patches and the devices they cover.

The same separation applies when comparing Android and iOS. Counting a Pixel’s seven years as if every day brings a new major Android version would overstate what the policy says; counting an iPhone’s last major iOS release as the exact date security protection ended would understate Apple’s stated approach. A precise article or buyer checklist names the update category each time.

Does Apple’s approach mean iPhones are unsupported after a major upgrade ends?

Not necessarily. Apple explicitly says it strives to provide critical security updates after a product can no longer receive the newest OS. The duration and scope are not presented as a guaranteed number of years for each model, however, so buyers should not convert the historical six-year reach into an automatic future entitlement. Check the latest dated release record for the specific model or iOS branch instead.

How do the two support policies compare?

The policies use different kinds of evidence. Google publishes a duration and a start event for named Pixel generations; Apple publishes historical results and a continuing-support objective without a model-specific minimum. The table keeps those claims separate.

Question Google Pixel Apple iPhone
Published duration Seven years for Pixel 8 and later; five years for Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generations. No equivalent future duration stated for each current iPhone in the June 2024 longevity document.
What starts the clock? First availability on the Google Store in the U.S., not the owner’s purchase date. Apple’s document discusses years after the device’s original release when describing historical support.
Operating-system updates Seven years of OS updates for Pixel 8 and later under the published policy. Historical OS feature-update support has reached as far back as six years; this is not a guaranteed term.
Security updates Included in the seven-year Pixel 8-and-later commitment. Apple says it strives to provide critical security updates after a phone cannot run the newest iOS; no fixed per-model period is stated.
Feature updates outside major OS releases Pixel Drops may include new and upgraded features; rollout timing can vary. The cited longevity document does not provide a comparable feature-drop schedule.
Evidence type Forward-looking policy for specified model generations. Historical support record and a stated approach to critical security maintenance.
What a buyer can calculate Remaining policy time can be estimated by subtracting elapsed time since first U.S. Google Store availability. There is no published per-model minimum to subtract from a purchase date; use compatibility and dated security records.

This is why the answer changes slightly depending on the wording of the question. “Which company guarantees more?” points to Pixel 8 and later. “Which particular phone has still been receiving patches?” requires a model-level investigation and may produce a different result.

Why must you compare exact iPhone and Pixel models?

Brand-level comparisons hide different launch years and policy tiers. A Pixel 8 has a different commitment from a Pixel 7, just as an iPhone 6s has a different update record from a newer iPhone. The model, its original release or first-store-availability event, and the type of update being measured all belong in the same comparison.

For a Pixel, identify the policy generation

  • Pixel 8 or later: use Google’s seven-year OS-and-security commitment.
  • Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 generation: use Google’s listed five-year period.
  • Any purchase made after launch: subtract the elapsed time since first U.S. Google Store availability from the stated window.
  • Confirm whether the listing is a carrier version or an unlocked version, because Google says rollout timing can depend on the carrier and device.

For an iPhone, record observed support rather than inventing a deadline

  • Check Apple’s compatibility information for the newest major iOS version the exact model supports.
  • Check Apple’s dated security-release records for patches issued to that model or its iOS branch.
  • Record the date of the latest applicable release and the branch it targets.
  • Report the two results separately; compatibility with a major iOS release is not proof that security patches will continue for a specified number of additional years.

How can you check the remaining support for a phone before buying it?

Use the manufacturer’s model-specific records, then write down the result as two separate dates or statuses: major OS eligibility and security-maintenance evidence. This process works for a new phone, a used device, or a comparison between two discounted models.

  1. Confirm the exact model and generation. Do not rely on a seller’s generic “Pixel” or “iPhone” label. Record the model name, storage variant if relevant to the listing, and generation. A generation mistake can switch the applicable Pixel policy from seven years to five.
  2. For Pixel, locate the first U.S. Google Store availability. Apply Google’s stated seven-year window for Pixel 8 and later or five-year window for Pixel 6 and Pixel 7. The calculation begins with that availability event, not your transaction date.
  3. Estimate the unelapsed period. Compare today’s date with the model’s policy start date. If the phone has already spent part of its support window on the market, count only the remaining portion when comparing it with a newer device.
  4. For iPhone, check major iOS compatibility. Apple’s compatibility guide identifies the models supported by each iOS generation. This tells you whether the phone can install the current major release, not how long security-only updates will continue.
  5. Check dated security releases. Apple’s security-release list records which devices received each patch. For a Pixel, account for Google’s policy and remember that carrier rollout can delay delivery.
  6. Separate current status from future certainty. “Currently compatible with” describes what the phone can run now. “Historically received” describes a dated Apple release. “Guaranteed under Google’s published policy” identifies the Pixel commitment. These phrases should not be substituted for one another.
  7. Recheck before completing a used-phone purchase. A listing can remain online after several years of the model’s support window have elapsed. Verify the model identifier and the latest applicable release rather than relying on the seller’s claim that it has “many years of updates.”

What is the practical difference between OS updates, security updates and feature drops?

These terms describe different benefits, and a phone can receive one type after losing another. A useful comparison names the category instead of calling all support simply “updates.”

Major OS updates

These are new Android or iOS generations. They can add user-facing functions, change system behavior, and expand or remove hardware support. Eligibility is model-specific, so a phone may remain secure on an older branch without receiving the newest OS. Major-version eligibility is usually the most visible measure, but it is not the only one that matters for a secure daily-use phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security updates

Security patches address known vulnerabilities. They are often smaller and can be issued for older OS branches. Apple’s iPhone 6s example demonstrates this distinction: the phone received an iOS 15 security update in March 2024 even though the example is used to illustrate support beyond the newest iOS generation. Google’s Pixel 8-and-later policy explicitly includes security updates throughout its seven-year term.

Feature Drops and other feature releases

Google says Pixel Drops may include new or upgraded features during the supported period. They are an additional delivery channel, not a replacement for the seven-year OS-and-security commitment, and their arrival can still depend on rollout conditions. A Feature Drop should not be counted as an extra year of support or treated as evidence that an older Pixel generation has been moved into the Pixel 8 policy tier.

Does the seven-year Pixel promise prove that every Pixel lasts longer than every iPhone?

No. It proves that Google has published the clearer minimum for Pixel 8 and later. Actual usefulness depends on the exact iPhone model, the date and type of its updates, hardware condition, app requirements, battery health, and regional or carrier delivery.

For an older-phone longevity question, compare records model by model. An iPhone with a long sequence of dated security releases may remain practical after its final major iOS upgrade, while a Pixel from an older five-year policy generation may have a different end date. Neither outcome can be inferred from the seven-year Pixel headline alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also a difference between support availability and day-to-day experience. An update may be offered but arrive later on a particular carrier variant. A phone may be technically compatible with an OS while its aging battery or limited storage makes the upgrade less convenient. Those practical considerations do not change the published guarantee, but they matter when deciding whether a phone will remain useful for the whole period.

Which phone should you choose if update longevity is your priority?

Choose Pixel 8 or later when a written duration matters most

Pixel 8-and-later models are the straightforward choice for buyers who want a clearly stated term covering both OS and security updates. The commitment is easiest to verify, provided you calculate the remaining period from first U.S. Google Store availability and account for rollout timing. It is especially useful for buyers who plan to keep one phone for many years and want a published benchmark rather than an inference from past releases.

Choose an iPhone when historical support and Apple’s ecosystem fit your needs

An iPhone can still be a strong long-term purchase. Apple’s record includes major OS feature support reaching as far back as six years in the cited document and security updates beyond the newest OS for at least some models. The trade-off is that Apple does not publish a comparable, model-specific future minimum, so you must rely on compatibility and dated security-release evidence.

Be cautious with discounted older models

A lower purchase price does not reset a support clock. A used Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 remains under the five-year policy listed for its generation, and an older iPhone’s remaining support must be judged from its release history and current security coverage. Ask for the exact model before comparing prices. A cheap handset with a short remaining support window may offer less long-term value than a newer model with a higher initial price.

What are the main limits of this comparison?

  • Different starting events: Google counts from first U.S. Google Store availability, while Apple’s historical discussion refers to original release years.
  • Different evidence: Google provides a prospective duration; Apple provides historical reach and a stated intention for critical security maintenance.
  • Different update categories: OS eligibility, security patches and feature releases are not interchangeable.
  • Regional and carrier variation: Google says rollout timing can depend on carrier and device, so policy coverage does not guarantee simultaneous delivery.
  • No universal real-world ranking: The published policies do not establish that every Pixel outlasts every iPhone or that every model receives identical treatment.
  • Policy tiers within one brand: Pixel 8-and-later terms cannot be applied retroactively to Pixel 6 or Pixel 7.
  • Historical evidence is not a promise: Apple’s six-year OS-feature figure and the iPhone 6s security example show what has occurred, not an automatic deadline for future iPhones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does buying a Pixel later give me a fresh seven-year period?

No. Google measures Pixel 8-and-later support from the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the U.S. Buying a discounted or refurbished unit later means part of that window has already elapsed.

Can Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 owners claim the seven-year policy?

No. Google lists the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generations under a five-year update period. The seven-year commitment begins with Pixel 8 and later generations covered by the current policy.

Does the seven-year Pixel term include security updates?

Yes. Google’s published Pixel 8-and-later policy includes both Android operating-system updates and security updates. Pixel Drops may add features, but rollout timing can vary.

What does Apple’s six-year support figure actually measure?

It describes Apple’s historical reach for OS feature updates, not a guaranteed six-year minimum for every newly purchased iPhone. Apple separately says it strives to provide critical security updates after a phone can no longer run the newest iOS.

How do I tell whether an iPhone security update is still available?

Look up the exact model in Apple’s dated security-release records and note the iOS branch named for that release. Then check Apple’s compatibility guide separately to see whether the phone supports the newest major iOS version.

Will an unlocked phone receive updates before a carrier model?

Not always. Google says update timing can depend on the carrier and device, so unlocked and carrier variants may not receive a release simultaneously even when both are inside the published support period.

Is the iPhone 6s example proof that every iPhone gets nine years of updates?

No. Apple’s example identifies an iPhone 6s introduced in 2015 that received an iOS 15 security update in March 2024. It demonstrates extended security maintenance for that model, not a universal future guarantee.

Should I compare the last major OS version or the last security patch?

Compare both, but label them separately. Major OS compatibility shows whether the phone can run a particular generation; dated security records show whether patches continued on the device or its older OS branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Pixel Feature Drop extend the guaranteed support period?

No. Feature Drops are additional feature releases during the supported period. They do not restart the seven-year clock or change the separate policy applied to older Pixel generations.

The Bottom Line

Pixel 8 and later have the longest clearly published guarantee: seven years of OS and security updates from first U.S. Google Store availability. Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 are listed for five years. Apple documents historical OS feature support reaching as far back as six years and later security updates for some devices, but it does not publish an equivalent future minimum for every current iPhone.

For any purchase, verify the exact model, calculate the remaining Pixel policy window or check Apple’s compatibility and dated security records, and distinguish major OS upgrades from security patches and feature releases.
