SwiftKey is the best first download for most iPhone owners who want swipe typing, stronger predictions, and customization. Gboard is the better fit if you want Google Search, GIFs, stickers, and emoji search above the keys. Grammarly Keyboard focuses on grammar, tone, dictation cleanup, and AI rewrites; Typewise uses a hexagonal layout with larger keys and editing gestures; and the Logitech K380 replaces the glass keyboard with tactile, laptop-style keys.

Apple’s QuickType remains a capable fallback, with autocorrection, predictive typing, inline predictions, multilingual typing, and QuickPath. Because iOS can restrict third-party keyboards in password, banking, enterprise, and other secure fields, keeping QuickType enabled is practical even after you install an alternative.

What are the best iPhone keyboard alternatives to Apple’s keyboard?

The right choice depends on how you type rather than on a universal speed ranking. SwiftKey is the strongest all-round software alternative, Gboard adds Google-powered tools, Grammarly improves writing quality, Typewise changes the key layout, and the Logitech K380 is for people who prefer physical keys.

  • OPTIMIZED iOS SHORTCUTS: 12 dedicated multimedia hotkeys for volume, brightness, music & more; one-key control for iPadOS/iOS efficiency

Think of these as five different ways to address typing friction, not five versions of the same product. SwiftKey and Gboard keep a familiar screen-keyboard experience while changing prediction or adding tools. Grammarly puts editing help in the typing flow. Typewise changes where your fingers land. The K380 changes the input device altogether. If you are unsure, identify the annoyance you want to fix—mistyped words, repeated app-switching, writing errors, missed taps, or typing on glass—before choosing.

Should you try Apple QuickType before installing anything?

Yes, especially if your only goal is swipe typing. Apple lists QuickType features including autocorrection, predictive typing, inline predictions, multilingual typing, and QuickPath, so the built-in keyboard already covers the core needs of many users.

QuickType also matters as a fallback. iOS may limit third-party keyboards in password fields, secure forms, banking apps, enterprise-managed software, or other restricted contexts. Leaving Apple’s keyboard installed means the globe key can take over when an app blocks the alternative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes QuickType a useful baseline for comparing another keyboard, too. Try a few ordinary messages with Apple’s keyboard first, paying attention to whether the problem is correcting words, switching languages, or entering text one letter at a time. If QuickPath and predictive typing already solve it, there may be no need to add another keyboard or enable additional permissions.

How do you install and switch to a third-party iPhone keyboard?

Install the keyboard app from the App Store, then add it through iOS settings. The exact labels can vary slightly by iOS release, but the current path is:

  1. Open Settings and choose General.
  2. Tap Keyboard, then Keyboards.
  3. Choose Add New Keyboard and select the installed keyboard.
  4. Open the new keyboard’s entry if it offers additional settings. Review what the app requests before enabling Full Access.
  5. In any text field, tap the globe or keyboard key to cycle through Apple’s keyboard and the alternatives you added. Press and hold it to select a keyboard from the list.

Full Access can be required for network-connected features such as search, cloud synchronization, voice services, personalization, or AI processing. Do not enable it automatically: read the permission screen and the provider’s current privacy disclosures, then turn on only the features you are comfortable using.

Adding a keyboard does not mean it must become your default for every task. Keep the options you actually use in the keyboard list, and select among them from a text field. You can remove a keyboard from iOS settings without necessarily deleting its companion app; conversely, deleting the app removes its keyboard option. If you install several, reorder the list so your preferred options are easiest to reach.

After setup, test the keyboard in a low-stakes text field. Check whether its language, prediction bar, swipe input, and special tools work as expected. If an expected feature is absent, check the app’s settings and current iOS requirements before assuming the installation failed: features and language availability can differ by platform, version, or region.

Which software keyboard is best for swipe typing?

Microsoft SwiftKey: the best all-round replacement

SwiftKey is the clearest first choice when you want to trace words across the letters instead of tapping each key. Its iPhone app combines swipe typing with predictions, personalization, and themes, giving you control over both the input method and appearance.

A 2026 iTechGuides comparison describes SwiftKey’s iOS material as supporting more than 500 languages, but availability can change by app version and platform. Do not assume that every language or Android feature is present on iPhone; check the current language list inside the iOS app.

  • USB-C Rechargeable: Recharge with the included USB-C cable and rely on auto-sleep standby up to 150 days, so the travel keyboard is ready when your work moves

SwiftKey suits people who want a conventional QWERTY layout with a strong prediction bar and customization. It is less suitable if your priority is built-in web search, extensive grammar coaching, or a radically different key shape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Word tracing is most useful when you are comfortable moving continuously across a familiar layout rather than making separate taps. Predictions and personalization are additional parts of the offer, but their usefulness depends on your language and habits. SwiftKey is free to try on iOS, which makes it a reasonable first experiment if you want a software alternative without committing to a paid plan. The cited comparison cautions that feature depth differs between iOS and Android, so evaluate the iPhone app on its own merits.

Gboard: the best keyboard for Google tools

Gboard puts Google Search, GIFs, stickers, emoji search, glide typing, voice input, and multilingual tools close to the keys. That makes it useful when a conversation needs a quick search result, a specific emoji, or a reaction image without leaving the current app.

The convenience comes with a privacy decision. Search, voice, synchronization, and other online functions can require permissions or network access, so inspect the iPhone permission screen and Google’s current disclosures before enabling optional features. You can choose Gboard for its tools without granting every available permission.

Consider whether you will use those tools often enough to justify adding another keyboard. If your main aim is to trace words, SwiftKey is the more direct recommendation; if your usual workflow includes searching for information or finding visual reactions while composing, Gboard’s built-in tools are the distinguishing advantage. As with any keyboard, do not assume every function works identically in every app or field on iOS.

Grammarly Keyboard: the best for writing quality

Grammarly Keyboard is designed for people who want writing feedback while composing in other iPhone and iPad apps, without copying text into a separate editor. Grammarly’s 2026 App Store listing says it provides spelling, grammar, and conciseness suggestions in more than 20 languages, while keyboard typing is supported in six languages.

The same listing describes tone detection, multi-word predictions, swipe typing, voice dictation with automatic cleanup, and generative AI rewrites. Advanced clarity, vocabulary, tone transformations, and related capabilities are connected to paid plans, so the free experience and subscription experience are not identical.

Grammarly support lists iOS 17 or newer for the iOS product. The keyboard retains native emoji and swipe functionality, and Grammarly states that dictation audio is not stored. Treat that statement as the company’s current product disclosure and review settings yourself if your writing is sensitive.

The language figures describe different capabilities: more than 20 languages for spelling, grammar, and conciseness suggestions is not the same as six languages for keyboard typing. Check that distinction if you write in multiple languages or expect the same suggestions in each one. Grammarly is best understood as an in-app writing assistant, not simply an autocorrect replacement. If you mainly want basic word correction, QuickType or a prediction-focused keyboard may be enough; if tone and clarity matter in messages or work email, the writing tools are more relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grammarly’s App Store listing describes it as delivering real-time writing feedback and AI assistance directly in iPhone and iPad apps, without copy and paste. That convenience does not remove the need to check a suggested rewrite before sending it, particularly when exact wording matters. Confirm which tools are free and which are part of a paid plan in the current app listing and account details.

Typewise: the specialist choice for larger, unusual keys

Typewise replaces the familiar rectangular arrangement with a hexagonal layout intended to give each key a larger target. Its gestures cover actions such as capitalization, deletion, and restoring text, so editing can be performed without reaching for as many separate controls.

The layout can reduce accidental presses for some users, but it demands practice because the key positions differ from standard iPhone and desktop keyboards. Typewise should not be described as a SwiftKey-style word-tracing keyboard; its distinctive value is the layout and gesture system. The cited comparison provides no controlled accuracy test, so claims of better accuracy should remain personal rather than universal.

This is a specialist choice rather than the safest first download for everyone. A person who frequently hits adjacent keys may appreciate larger targets, but a person who relies on muscle memory may initially find the unfamiliar shape slower. Give yourself time to learn before judging the layout, and switch back to QuickType or a standard QWERTY alternative for tasks where speed and familiarity matter immediately.

Is a physical keyboard better than an on-screen alternative?

For long documents, email sessions, or anyone who dislikes typing on glass, a physical keyboard can be a better answer than another app. The Logitech K380 is a portable Bluetooth keyboard with laptop-style keys and pairing for three Bluetooth devices, allowing one keyboard to move between devices without replacing the iPhone’s software keyboard permanently.

It is not a mechanical keyboard and has no touchpad. Choose it for tactile travel and a familiar laptop feel, not for iPhone-specific swipe gestures, on-screen emoji search, or a built-in pointing surface. Because it is hardware, you must carry and charge or power the keyboard separately, while a software keyboard is always available on the phone.

The K380 is especially practical if you already move between a phone and other Bluetooth devices: its three-device pairing is a stated convenience, not a promise that it will replace every device’s own settings or input behavior. It is still a separate piece of hardware to bring along, unlike an app that is already on the phone. Think of the trade-off as tactile, laptop-style keys in exchange for added bulk and no touchpad. The comparison does not provide a price, so check the current retailer listing rather than assuming a particular cost.

How do the five choices differ on privacy, language, and compatibility?

Use the following decision points instead of assuming that the most popular keyboard is the best for every task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Input method: SwiftKey and Grammarly offer word-tracing swipe; Gboard offers glide typing; Typewise uses a hexagonal tap layout and gestures; the K380 uses physical keys.
  • Writing assistance: Grammarly is the specialist for grammar, conciseness, tone, dictation cleanup, and AI rewrites. SwiftKey and Gboard emphasize prediction, while Typewise emphasizes editing gestures.
  • Language needs: SwiftKey’s cited iOS material lists more than 500 languages. Grammarly distinguishes between suggestions in 20-plus languages and keyboard typing in six. Check each app’s current iOS language list before changing your primary keyboard.
  • Privacy and permissions: Search, voice, cloud synchronization, personalization, and AI can require Full Access or network connectivity. Typewise’s on-device prediction and privacy positioning are vendor claims that should be checked against its current settings; no keyboard should be treated as universally private.
  • Compatibility: Grammarly requires iOS 17 or newer according to its support documentation. Third-party keyboards can be unavailable in secure fields, so Apple QuickType remains useful even when another keyboard is your daily choice.
  • Portability: Software keyboards add no hardware to your bag. The K380 adds a physical device but provides laptop-style keys and three-device Bluetooth pairing.

Permission decisions should follow the features you intend to use, rather than a blanket assumption that a keyboard needs or does not need access. A keyboard with a search function, voice feature, synchronization, or AI processing may need network access or Full Access for that specific capability. Review what the app asks for, whether the feature is optional, and the provider’s current privacy disclosures. For sensitive text, consider whether the convenience is worth enabling the relevant online function.

There is no defensible one-size-fits-all verdict on privacy or typing speed here. A keyboard can feel faster because its layout suits your hands, because you use its preferred language, or because it reduces app switching; another person may value an offline workflow or a familiar key arrangement more. Test with the same kinds of messages and language switching you do every day, then keep the keyboard that improves your own routine.

What do the available App Store ratings show?

Ratings can indicate adoption and general satisfaction, but they are not controlled typing tests. The following figures are U.S. App Store snapshots reported by the GeekChamp comparison on August 16, 2026; they can change as reviews arrive.

Rank #4
ProtoArc XK01 Full-Size Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard for Travel, Black | 105 keys, number pad, 0.65in keycaps, 3-device Bluetooth 5.1 switching, USB-C charging, for laptop tablet phone
  • True Full-Size Typing: 105 keys, 0.65in keycaps, a number pad, function row, and navigation keys deliver a desktop-style typing experience for travel, office, and remote work
  • Tri-Fold Travel Design: The keyboard folds to 8.46 x 4.68 x 0.78 in, with internal aluminum hinges tested for 10,000+ folds and a no-clip design for quick setup
  • 3-Device Bluetooth Switching: Bluetooth 5.1 connects up to three devices and switches with one button, helping you move between laptop, tablet, and phone without breaking workflow
  • USB-C Rechargeable Standby: Recharge with the included USB-C cable and rely on auto-sleep standby up to 150 days, so the travel keyboard is ready when your work moves
  • Quiet Scissor-Switch Keys: Low-profile scissor switches reduce typing noise in coffee shops, open offices, and shared rooms while keeping each keystroke comfortable and controlled
Keyboard Snapshot rating Ratings count
SwiftKey Approximately 4.6 stars Approximately 121,000
Gboard Approximately 4.1 stars Approximately 59,000
Grammarly Keyboard Approximately 4.7 stars Approximately 221,000
Typewise Approximately 3.8 stars Approximately 844

The different review volumes matter when interpreting the table. Grammarly’s higher snapshot rating does not prove it is faster than SwiftKey, and Typewise’s smaller review base makes a direct popularity comparison especially weak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These ratings also represent a dated U.S. store snapshot, not a promise about your region, device, or current app version. Ratings can shift when new reviews arrive, and a large review count does not tell you whether a keyboard’s features match your own priorities. Use the figures as context, then check current compatibility, permissions, languages, and plan terms before installing.

Which iPhone keyboard should you choose?

Match the keyboard to the problem you are trying to solve:

  • Choose SwiftKey if you want one conventional keyboard with swipe typing, predictions, themes, and personalization.
  • Choose Gboard if searching the web, finding GIFs, or looking up emoji from the keyboard matters more than minimizing online services.
  • Choose Grammarly Keyboard if messages, documents, or work email need grammar, tone, conciseness, dictation cleanup, or AI rewriting. Check the iOS 17 requirement and which advanced tools require a paid plan.
  • Choose Typewise if accidental taps are your main frustration and you are willing to learn a hexagonal layout rather than expecting traditional swipe typing.
  • Choose the Logitech K380 if you write for long periods and want laptop-style tactile keys, can carry hardware, and do not need a touchpad.
  • Keep Apple QuickType enabled regardless of your primary choice if you use banking, password, enterprise, or other apps that may restrict third-party keyboards.

If you want to narrow the choice quickly, start with the input style: word tracing points to SwiftKey, a tool-filled keyboard points to Gboard, and in-place language feedback points to Grammarly. Try Typewise when a different target shape is the point, not when you expect familiar swipe typing. Choose the K380 when you want a physical keyboard and accept the extra item to carry. These are different remedies, so installing all five is unnecessary for most people.

How can you troubleshoot a third-party keyboard that is not working?

The keyboard does not appear in the globe-key menu

Return to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and confirm that the keyboard is listed. If it is missing, use Add New Keyboard again; if it is listed but unavailable, force-close the app that contains the text field and reopen it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The keyboard works in messages but not in a password field

This is usually an iOS or app security restriction rather than a broken installation. Tap the globe key to return to Apple’s keyboard, enter the protected information, and switch back when the field allows third-party input.

Predictions or search features are missing

Check whether the feature requires Full Access, an internet connection, a signed-in account, or a paid plan. Enabling a permission does not guarantee that every feature is available on iOS; app version, language, and regional support can differ.

The new layout feels slower

Give Typewise time to learn if you selected it for its hexagonal design, and verify that the language you use is supported. If you need immediate word-tracing familiarity, SwiftKey, Gboard, or Grammarly will be closer to the standard QWERTY experience.

A feature works on one platform but not another

Do not assume that an app’s Android feature set carries over unchanged to iPhone. The comparison notes that availability and feature depth can differ between iOS and Android. Check the current iOS app description and in-app options, particularly for languages and online tools, before treating a missing feature as a fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want to stop using the keyboard

Switch back to Apple’s keyboard with the globe key, or remove the third-party keyboard under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Removing the keyboard from that list is distinct from deleting the app, so choose whether you want to retain the app for later or uninstall it as well.

What is the practical verdict?

Install SwiftKey first if you want the broadest improvement over Apple’s on-screen keyboard with the least change in technique. Pick Gboard for its tool-rich top row, Grammarly for writing assistance, Typewise for a different ergonomic layout, and the Logitech K380 when tactile keys matter more than phone portability. Keep QuickType available because iOS restrictions make a single third-party keyboard an incomplete replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep several keyboards installed on one iPhone?

Yes. Add each one under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards, then use the globe key to switch among them. In the same list, tap Edit to reorder keyboards or swipe left on one and tap Delete to remove it without uninstalling the app.

Can a Bluetooth keyboard and an iPhone keyboard coexist?

Yes. Pairing a physical keyboard does not require deleting software keyboards; the on-screen options remain available when the Bluetooth keyboard is disconnected or when you choose to type on the display. This lets you use a K380 for long documents and an on-screen keyboard for short entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Grammarly Keyboard replace the iPhone emoji keyboard?

No. Grammarly’s support information says its iOS keyboard retains native emoji functionality, so you can still use the familiar emoji picker while its writing suggestions are enabled. The exact controls can vary by iOS version and app context.

Why might a keyboard’s star rating change after I install it?

App Store ratings are live aggregates, not fixed test scores. Updates, language support changes, subscription changes, and new user reviews can move the average after the dated snapshots cited in this guide, so check the current listing before deciding.

Which iPhone keyboard is best for swipe typing?

SwiftKey is the clearest first choice for word-tracing swipe typing. Gboard offers glide typing, and Grammarly Keyboard also lists swipe functionality, but SwiftKey is the strongest fit if swipe input is the main reason you are switching.

Is there an iPhone keyboard with better autocorrect?

There is no universal winner established by an independent typing-speed or accuracy test. SwiftKey emphasizes predictions and personalization, while Grammarly adds spelling and grammar suggestions; Apple QuickType also includes autocorrection and predictive typing. Try the options with your usual language and writing style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a physical keyboard with my iPhone?

Yes. The Logitech K380 is a Bluetooth option with laptop-style keys and pairing for three Bluetooth devices. It complements rather than replaces the iPhone’s software keyboards, and it has no touchpad.

Do I have to pay to use these alternatives?

SwiftKey is described as a free iOS app. Grammarly’s advanced clarity, vocabulary, tone transformations, and related features are tied to paid plans. The cited material does not establish current prices for every product, so check each App Store listing or retailer for current costs and plan terms.

Should I enable Full Access for a keyboard?

Only after checking what the app requests and which features you want to use. Network-connected search, cloud synchronization, voice, personalization, or AI functions may need additional access. Review the provider’s current disclosures and leave optional capabilities off if you are not comfortable with them.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
