Resolve any failed requirement before continuing; a missing extension or unwritable directory is easier to fix now than after the forum is live.
- Enter database details. Provide the database type, server host, port, database name, database username, and password exactly as the host supplied them. A typo, an omitted account prefix, or an incorrect port commonly causes connection failures.
- Create the administrator account. Enter the administrator username, password, and email address. Use a long password that is not reused on the hosting account or email account.
- Finish the installation and sign in. Let phpBB create its tables and configuration. When the installer reports success, sign in to the Administration Control Panel and confirm that the board loads over HTTPS.
- Remove the installer directory. Delete the forum’s
/install/directory from the server. Leaving it in place can block normal operation and leaves an unnecessary setup endpoint exposed. - Restore restrictive permissions. During setup, phpBB may require
config.phpto be writable. The official instructions then require changing it so it is writable only by you (the owner), rather than broadly writable. Apply the narrowest permissions your host supports and check that the forum still loads.
The setup is complete only after the installer directory is removed and config.php is secured. Treat those as release steps, not optional cleanup.
Why does the two-minute estimate often fail?
The estimate assumes all preparation has already happened. Several independent delays can dominate the clock.
- DNS is not ready: a new domain or subdomain may not yet resolve to the hosting account, so the installer URL cannot be reached.
- Upload speed is limited: shared servers can throttle FTP transfers or contain many small files, making the archive upload much slower than expected.
- The database is not provisioned: waiting for a database, user, or permission change removes the main time advantage of the quick flow.
- PHP is too old or missing modules: the installer stops until the host changes the PHP version or enables the required extensions.
- Permissions are restricted: hardened hosts may prevent phpBB from writing configuration data or required directories.
- Quota is exhausted: inode, disk, upload, or process limits can interrupt extraction, uploads, or attachment handling.
Use “two minutes” as an optimistic launch target after preparation, not as a service-level guarantee. A host that meets every technical requirement is more important than one that advertises the lowest monthly number.

“Unsupported PHP version” or missing extension
Check the domain’s actual PHP version, not just the account’s default. Change it in the panel or ask support to enable PHP 7.2.0 or newer and the missing JSON, mbstring, XML, database module, or getimagesize() capability. Re-run the installer checks after the change has taken effect.
“Could not connect to the database”
Re-enter the database host, port, name, username, and password from the hosting panel. Confirm that the user is assigned to the database and that the host has not added a prefix. Do not assume localhost; shared providers often use a separate database hostname.
Permission or unwritable-file errors

Check the host’s PHP error log and process limits. A mismatched PHP handler, exhausted memory or process quota, or an incomplete upload can produce a generic server error. Re-upload missing files and ask support whether the account blocks a required PHP function.

The forum loads but images or attachments fail
Verify that getimagesize() is enabled, the upload and post-size limits are high enough for your intended files, and the attachment directories are writable by the web process. These limits are host-specific and may require a plan change even when the initial installation succeeds.
Is phpBB a better no-Composer choice than Flarum?
