Neither in-person debriefs nor recorded video calls reliably produce more honest feedback in every situation. Face-to-face meetings can make rapport and follow-up questions easier, and may reveal useful context. But being physically with an interviewer can also make people more guarded. Video calls remove travel barriers, yet a visible camera, recording, privacy concerns or technical problems can likewise affect what people disclose. The best choice depends on the topic, the participant’s sense of privacy and the way the session is run—not on the channel alone.

First decide what you mean by “honest”

A debrief can be successful in one sense and limited in another. Before choosing a format, distinguish three outcomes that are often bundled together:

  • Candid disclosure: whether someone feels able to say what they really think, including criticism or sensitive information.
  • Factual accuracy: whether their account of what happened is correct. A detailed answer is not necessarily an accurate one.
  • Depth and context: how much explanation, detail and surrounding context a person provides. A longer account is not necessarily more candid.

These distinctions matter because in-person interaction may produce richer contextual detail without reducing impression management. Conversely, a less socially intense format may feel easier for some participants without improving the factual accuracy of their answers. If a program measures only answer length or visible rapport, it can mistake depth for honesty.

What the comparative evidence does—and does not—show

The available studies do not establish a universal honesty winner. A 2022 mixed-mode interview study involving 154 interviews asked sensitive questions across video, audio, email, instant chat and survey conditions. Its authors concluded: “There is little evidence to support differences in self-reported honesty or social desirability bias across mode.” That finding argues against treating any one channel as inherently more truthful; it does not mean every participant experiences every mode the same way.

Other research measures related but different outcomes. In a 2020 experiment with 114 participants, researchers compared face-to-face and videoconference interviews in relation to social presence, eye contact and impression management; videoconference interviewees received lower performance ratings. That result is about interview ratings and the factors examined in that experiment. It is not proof that video participants were more honest, less honest, or more accurate in a debrief.

A 2023 study of live video in survey interviews found that 56.7% of respondents rated their experienced privacy as the same as they imagined it would be in a hypothetical in-person interview. This is a comparison between participants’ experience of live video and their imagined in-person privacy—not a direct finding that either format is objectively more private or produces truer answers.

Reviews add useful context but do not remove these limits. A systematic review describes face-to-face interaction as richer in social context and visual cues, which can support rapport, probing and detailed accounts. A 2025 scoping review tentatively finds greater depth in some in-person studies, while linking differences to technical problems, distractions and interview time rather than to an inevitable advantage of the format. Greater depth is not, by itself, evidence of greater honesty.

How each format can shape what people say

In-person debriefs: more shared context, more physical presence

In-person meetings give a moderator access to the participant’s surroundings and to visual and vocal cues that may be harder to interpret through a screen. A shared physical setting can make it easier to establish rapport, notice when an answer needs a follow-up, and ask a neutral clarifying question while the context is fresh. When the environment or an interaction with a physical product is central to the debrief, being there can provide useful information that a remote conversation may not capture.

Those advantages concern observation and conversation, not a guarantee of candor. Participants may manage impressions when they feel watched or judged, particularly when the subject is sensitive. Being in the same room can make an interviewer’s social presence more immediate; a participant may soften criticism, avoid embarrassment or give an answer they believe is expected. A warm conversation can still contain incomplete or socially desirable answers.

Physical access also has costs for inclusion. Travel, location, scheduling or a participant’s circumstances may make an in-person session difficult or impossible. A method that excludes people who cannot attend can distort whose feedback is represented, even if the sessions that do take place are rich in detail.

Recorded video calls: remote access, but not distance from social pressure

Live video retains facial and vocal interaction while removing the need to travel and making participation possible across a wider geography. That can be valuable when an in-person meeting would impose a substantial access or scheduling burden. A live interviewer can also keep respondents engaged and conscientious, according to a study comparing live and prerecorded video.

Live presence has a trade-off: it may create time pressure and more socially desirable responding. A participant can still feel evaluated by an interviewer on screen, and the camera can make them conscious of how they appear. The fact that a conversation is remote therefore does not make it private or anonymous.

Recording adds a separate consideration. Participants may change what they say if they are unsure who will see or hear the file, how it will be used, how long it will be kept or whether their comments can be linked to them. Explain the recording arrangement before asking for sensitive feedback. Recording should not be treated as a neutral technical detail that can be disclosed after the conversation begins.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Technical friction can also affect the account: a poor connection, audio problems, interruptions or uncertainty about whether a participant was heard may break the flow or shorten an explanation. A 2025 scoping review identifies technical problems and distractions among factors associated with differences in interview depth. Remote participation can also require adequate equipment and connectivity, so an online-only option may itself exclude some people.

Prerecorded video is a different interaction from a live call

Do not assume that every video interview has the same social effect. The live/prerecorded video study reports that prerecorded video generally creates weaker social presence than a live interviewer. That may reduce the immediate pressure of responding to another person, but it also changes the interaction: a prerecorded prompt cannot respond to an unexpected answer or ask a tailored follow-up in the way a moderator can. The study notes the potential motivational benefit of live interaction alongside its possible time-pressure and social-desirability costs; it does not establish that prerecorded responses are more honest overall.

Decision factor In-person debrief Recorded live video call
Topic sensitivity and privacy Useful when the participant can speak comfortably in a private, nonjudgmental setting; physical presence may feel more exposing for some. Useful when the participant has a private place to join; camera awareness, recording uncertainty or other people nearby may inhibit disclosure.
Need to observe context Often better suited when the environment, physical interaction or subtle cues are central to the question. Can preserve facial and vocal interaction, but provides less direct access to the participant’s physical environment.
Access and inclusion Requires the participant to attend the chosen location. Removes travel and can widen geographic access; requires suitable equipment and a reliable enough connection.
Follow-up and engagement Supports live probing and shared attention; interviewer presence can also increase impression management. Live probing is possible and can support engagement; social presence and possible time pressure remain.
Capture and review A recording device can capture a consented session; capture and access still need to be explained. Video or audio capture can support later review; participants need clear information about access, retention and deletion.
Known honesty advantage No universal advantage established. No universal advantage established.

For sensitive feedback, prioritize the setting in which a participant can speak without being overheard or feeling judged. For a debrief where seeing a physical environment or interaction is essential, in-person may be more informative. If travel, disability, geography or scheduling would otherwise keep people out, remote participation may improve access; provide an alternative for people with limited bandwidth or equipment. When the study cannot confidently predict which conditions participants will prefer, offer a mode choice if feasible or run a small, balanced pilot.

Set up sessions to reduce avoidable bias

  1. Decide what the debrief must measure. Write down whether the priority is candid disclosure, accurate recall, contextual detail or some combination. Do not use one outcome as a proxy for another.
  2. Use a consistent moderator guide. Keep the core prompts, order and neutral follow-up approach as similar as practical across modes. If a question must change because of the setting, document the change so it is not confused with a mode effect.
  3. Explain recording before the session. State whether audio, video or both will be captured; who can view the recording; how long it will be retained; and how it will be deleted. Give participants a chance to understand the arrangement before they answer.
  4. Check privacy conditions. Ask whether the participant can speak without being overheard. For a remote call, consider camera choice and any relevant accessibility needs rather than assuming that a participant’s surroundings are private.
  5. Pilot the technical setup. Check the camera, microphone, connection, captions and backup procedure before the interview. Decide how the moderator will handle an interruption or a lost connection, and record disruptions that could affect the data.
  6. Train moderators to probe neutrally. Use clarifying prompts that do not suggest a preferred answer. Keep the same consent language and moderator expectations across modes, and avoid treating visible confidence, eye contact or rapport as evidence of truthfulness.
  7. Offer alternatives where possible. A mode choice can help accommodate access needs and participant comfort. If offering a choice is not practical, explain the reason for the selected format and consider whether it could shape who participates.

Analyze mode as part of the data

Mode is not just a scheduling field. For each session, record whether it was in person or remote, whether the participant was alone or someone else was present, relevant privacy conditions, and any interruption or technical problem. Record only details that are appropriate for the program and its consent arrangements.

When reviewing results, compare the same kinds of evidence across formats. Look at whether participants raised criticism, how specific their accounts were, and whether they described concrete events—not merely how long they spoke or how comfortable they appeared. A fuller account can be valuable, but it does not establish that the participant was less influenced by social expectations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If responses appear to differ by mode, treat that as a pattern to investigate rather than proof of a causal effect. Participants who choose in-person sessions may differ from those who choose video in ways that also affect their feedback. Differences in privacy, interviewer behavior, participant access or technical disruptions may be more relevant than the channel itself. A small balanced pilot can reveal practical problems and mode-related patterns, but should not be presented as proof that one format wins in every setting.

Common mistakes that make feedback harder to interpret

  • Calling detailed feedback “more honest.” Detail supports understanding but does not establish candor or factual accuracy.
  • Assuming remote means anonymous. A live interviewer and a visible recording indicator can still create social pressure, and the participant may not know who can access the file.
  • Reading body language as a truth test. Eye contact, camera confidence and visible rapport are not direct measures of honesty.
  • Changing the questions between modes. If prompts or moderator behavior differ, those changes can be mistaken for a channel effect.
  • Ignoring interruptions and access barriers. A disrupted call or an inaccessible format can alter who participates and how much they are able to say.
  • Overgeneralizing from a single study. The 114-participant experiment, the 154-interview mixed-mode study and the 2023 privacy finding address different outcomes and conditions. None establishes a universal ranking for debrief honesty.

Practical verdict

Choose in-person debriefs when shared physical context and direct observation are important and participants can attend in a setting where they feel safe to speak. Choose live video when access and participation across distance matter, provided privacy, recording expectations and technical reliability are addressed. If both formats are workable, offer a choice or pilot them with consistent prompts and moderator practice. In every case, interpret depth, factual accuracy and candor as separate outcomes, and treat mode as one factor that can shape the feedback—not as a guarantee of truth.
