An Immersive Pixelmon setup succeeds when the Minecraft version, Pixelmon build, mod loader, Java runtime, configuration, and every player’s mod files match exactly. Install the client profile first, then build the server from the same manifest; choose a quest system that is actually available for your Pixelmon release rather than assuming every version has the same interface.

This guide covers the supported version pairs, Java and memory requirements, client and dedicated-server installation, world generation, modpack distribution, quest differences, hosting choices, and the fixes for the most common connection failures.

What an Immersive Pixelmon modpack includes

Pixelmon is a Forge-family Minecraft Java Edition mod that adds Pokémon, catching, battles, machines, structures, biomes and configuration options to a Minecraft world. An “immersive” modpack normally adds more than the Pixelmon jar: a loader profile, performance or visual mods, world-generation or biome mods, a quest or research layer, configuration files, and sometimes server-side sidemods.

There is no single universal Immersive Pixelmon pack. Two packs with similar names can target different Minecraft releases, use different loaders, or provide completely different progression. Treat the pack as a versioned software bundle. The server and every client must be built from the same Minecraft and Pixelmon pair, with compatible sidemod versions and matching configuration where the mod requires it.

Pick the Minecraft and Pixelmon pair before installing anything

Start with the server’s intended pair, not with the newest Minecraft launcher profile. Pixelmon’s official server guidance lists these supported combinations:

Minecraft Pixelmon releases listed for that version Loader and Java guidance
1.21.1 9.3.0 through 9.3.13 NeoForge; Java 21 for Pixelmon 9.3.0 and later
1.20.2 9.2.4 through 9.2.10 Forge-family setup; Java 17
1.20.1 9.2.0 through 9.2.3 Forge-family setup; Java 17
1.16.5 9.1.12 Forge; Java 8 for releases before 9.2.0

The ranges in this table are version families, not permission to mix releases. If the server runs 9.3.7 on Minecraft 1.21.1, a player running 9.3.6, a different Minecraft version, or a different loader profile is not using a compatible client. Pixelmon’s server guide states that connecting players must use the same Pixelmon version as the server; in practice, keep the Minecraft version and the rest of the modpack aligned as well.

Choose one exact Pixelmon build inside the applicable range, record it in a manifest, and use that record for the server and all player installations. If a pack author supplies a tested build, use that build instead of upgrading one component independently.

Requirements for the client and server

Minecraft edition

Use Minecraft Java Edition. The Pixelmon installation guide explicitly notes that only the Java Edition can run Forge mods such as Pixelmon. Bedrock Edition worlds, add-ons and marketplace packs are not interchangeable with a Java modpack.

Java runtime

Install the Java runtime required by the selected row in the version table. Pixelmon 9.3.0 and newer require Java 21; Pixelmon 9.2.0 through 9.2.10 require Java 17; releases before 9.2.0 require Java 8. A newer Java release is not automatically a substitute: the loader or a dependency can reject it, or the server can fail during startup. Check which executable your launcher and server script actually call, especially on systems with several Java installations.

Memory

The current Pixelmon server guidance calls for at least 4 GB of allocated RAM, preferably more. The client guidance calls for at least 2 GB available and assignable to the game. These are starting points, not performance guarantees: a larger player count, extra world-generation mods, shaders, high render distances and sidemods can increase demand. Leave memory for the operating system and other services instead of assigning all physical RAM to Java.

Files to collect

  • The exact Minecraft and Pixelmon versions.
  • The matching NeoForge or Forge installer and Java runtime.
  • The Pixelmon client jar and the server jar when the distribution provides separate files.
  • A list of every sidemod, its version and its required dependencies.
  • The pack’s configuration files, resource packs, datapacks and quest or research files.
  • A written manifest that players can use to verify their installation.

Install the client profile

Use a separate launcher profile or instance for each Pixelmon version. Keeping a Pixelmon instance isolated prevents an update for one world from silently changing another.

  1. Create the profile. Select the exact Minecraft release from the version table and install its matching NeoForge or Forge loader. For the 1.21.1 Pixelmon 9.3.x family, use NeoForge; do not substitute an older Forge profile.
  2. Select the required Java executable. Point the profile to Java 21, Java 17 or Java 8 according to the selected Pixelmon family. Confirm the launcher is using that executable rather than a system default.
  3. Set memory. Make at least the client baseline available and assignable, then increase it only when testing shows the pack needs more. Excessive allocation can make the operating system swap or become unresponsive.
  4. Install Pixelmon. Place the client jar in the profile’s mods directory, following the pack author’s instructions for the exact file. Do not put a server-only jar in a client profile.
  5. Add sidemods and dependencies. Copy only versions compatible with the selected Minecraft release, loader and Pixelmon build. If a mod requires a library, install the required library at the same time.
  6. Copy pack data. Add the supplied configuration files, resource packs, datapacks and quest or research assets to the locations specified by the pack. A quest mod without its data files may load while showing no objectives.
  7. Launch once and inspect the log. Stop at the title screen or enter a test world, then review the log for missing dependencies, wrong Java versions or duplicate mods. Fix errors before distributing the profile.
  8. Freeze the manifest. Record filenames and versions, then distribute that manifest or an export of the complete profile. Players should not update individual jars unless the server owner has tested and approved the change.

Set up a dedicated Pixelmon server

Build the server from a clean directory so old mods and worlds cannot hide a version mistake. The exact installer filename varies by loader release, but the sequence is consistent.

  1. Confirm the pair. Write down the exact Minecraft release, Pixelmon build, loader and Java runtime. Compare these values with the client manifest before creating a world.
  2. Install the loader. Run the matching NeoForge or Forge server installer in the new server directory. For Pixelmon 9.3.x on Minecraft 1.21.1, this means the NeoForge server profile.
  3. Start the server once. Launch the generated server script or jar with the selected Java executable. The first run creates the configuration and EULA files and may stop because acceptance is required.
  4. Accept the EULA. Read the Minecraft EULA, then change the generated EULA setting to indicate acceptance if you agree. Do not delete the file or skip this step; the server will not continue without it.
  5. Stop completely. Close the server cleanly before copying mods. Never replace jars while the server is writing its world or configuration.
  6. Add Pixelmon. Put the Pixelmon server jar in the server’s mods directory. Use the server distribution intended for the exact loader and Minecraft pair.
  7. Generate a fresh world when required. If the pack adds Pixelmon biomes, structures or other world-generation features, create the world after Pixelmon and those biome mods are installed. Existing chunks cannot retroactively gain every feature, so a test world made before the mods were present can give misleading results.
  8. Start and stop for first-run generation. Let the server finish creating its world and configuration, then stop it cleanly. Keep the initial world as a backup before making large changes.
  9. Edit Pixelmon configuration. The generated pixelmon configuration files contain gameplay and generation settings. Decide settings that affect fresh chunks before players explore widely; changing them later may affect only newly generated terrain.
  10. Add sidemods last. Check each sidemod’s Minecraft, loader and Pixelmon compatibility and its dependency list. Copy the approved jars, restart the server, and read the startup log for a clean load.

World-generation decisions that cannot be postponed

World-generation mods need to be present before the relevant chunks are created. Choose the seed, biome and structure settings, then generate a disposable test world. Travel far enough to verify that the intended Pixelmon features appear, and only then create the world you will share. If a pack’s instructions call for regenerating a world, back up player data first and understand that regeneration can remove builds and exploration progress.

Configuration discipline

Keep server configuration under version control or at least in dated backups. Change one setting at a time, record why it changed, and restart before judging the result. A configuration copied from a different Pixelmon family can contain removed or renamed options; if the log reports an unknown key, restore the version-matched file rather than forcing old settings into the new release.

Make every player’s installation identical

Multiplayer reliability comes from a small, explicit manifest rather than from asking players to copy a vague “mods” folder. Include the following in a shared document or exported pack profile:

Manifest item What to record Why it matters
Game and loader Minecraft version and NeoForge or Forge version A loader mismatch can prevent the game from reaching the server.
Pixelmon Exact jar filename and release The server requires the same Pixelmon version from clients.
Sidemods Every jar, version and dependency One incompatible library can stop startup or create missing-content errors.
Configuration Pack configs and any server-supplied overrides Different settings can change mechanics, generation or progression.
Quest or research data Quest-mod files, datapacks and scripts The interface can load without its objectives if data is omitted.
Java and memory Required runtime and recommended allocation Players otherwise launch with an incompatible runtime or too little memory.

Distribute updates as a complete, numbered pack revision. Tell players to close the game, replace the profile, and launch once before joining. Do not let one player keep an old configuration “because it worked”; that makes diagnosis harder and can produce different quest progress or world behavior.

  • Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor

How quests and progression work

Quest content depends on the pack and Pixelmon version. Pixelmon itself, a quest sidemod, a datapack, or a custom server script may supply the objectives. Name the pack and exact release before documenting a route, because an objective visible in one installation may not exist in another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Custom campaign quests

PokeQuests advertises a fully custom Kanto questline. A pack built around that content can provide a regional campaign with ordered objectives, progression gates and rewards. The campaign’s actual steps, NPCs and rewards come from the installed PokeQuests files and their configuration; they are not guaranteed by the base Pixelmon jar. Verify that the server and clients have the same quest data before expecting everyone to see the same objectives.

Research in newer releases

A recent community report says that Pixelmon 9.3.x on Minecraft 1.21.1 replaced older quests with a Research system. Treat that as a version-specific report, not a universal promise. Check the documentation for the exact Pixelmon build and pack. If the release exposes Research tasks rather than a legacy quest screen, explain progression in terms of research entries, discoveries and rewards instead of telling players to search for an interface that is not present.

Compare the systems before choosing a pack

Question Custom questline such as PokeQuests Pixelmon Research system
Who supplies objectives? An added quest mod and its data files The Pixelmon release, subject to the exact version
Campaign shape Can follow a designed regional storyline, such as Kanto May emphasize discoveries and research tasks rather than a linear campaign
Progression gates Defined by the quest author and pack configuration Defined by the Pixelmon release and its research implementation
Rewards Configured by the quest pack Configured by the relevant Pixelmon research content
Multiplayer behavior Depends on the quest mod’s synchronization and server settings Depends on the release’s research tracking and server implementation
Installation risk Missing quest data or dependencies can leave an empty interface Using instructions for an older quest interface can mislead players

For a cooperative server, test a new player account from start to finish: join, receive the first objective, complete it, disconnect, reconnect and verify the reward. Also test two players completing objectives at different times. This catches synchronization and permission problems before the public launch.

Choose local hosting or paid hosting by scale

Running the server on your own computer is suitable for a small group on the same network when the host can remain online. It gives you direct access to files and avoids a recurring hosting bill, but the world stops when the host shuts down and performance competes with the host’s other applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a server that must remain available to people outside the home, the official Pixelmon server guide strongly recommends paid hosting for bigger servers because of performance, stability and safety. A managed host can provide an always-on machine, backups and network controls, but you still remain responsible for selecting a compatible Java runtime, keeping the pack consistent and maintaining backups.

Hosting approach Best fit Plan for
Local computer Same-network play and small private tests The host must stay online; local firewall and network settings can block friends.
Self-managed remote machine Owners comfortable maintaining an operating system and Java Updates, security, backups, monitoring and recovery are your responsibility.
Paid managed host Larger or regularly available communities Choose a plan with enough memory and storage for the pack, and verify backup and mod support.

Whichever option you choose, keep an offline copy of the world, configuration and manifest. Test restoring that copy on a separate directory before an update, not after a corruption event.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
“Mod rejection” or an immediate disconnect Minecraft, Pixelmon, loader or sidemod versions differ Compare the client against the server manifest character by character. Replace the entire profile with the approved revision rather than updating one jar.
Server exits before showing a prompt Wrong Java runtime or loader Launch with the Java version required by the selected Pixelmon family and reinstall the matching NeoForge or Forge server files if necessary.
Client crashes while loading a world Insufficient assignable memory, missing dependency or incompatible client mod Check the log, confirm the client memory baseline, install the named dependency, and remove only the mod identified as incompatible.
Players see different terrain or missing structures The world was generated before Pixelmon or biome mods were installed, or configurations differ Test a new world after installing all generation mods and align the server configuration. Do not expect old chunks to regenerate automatically.
Quest screen is empty Quest data, datapack or dependency is missing; the release may use Research instead Verify the pack files and exact Pixelmon build, then follow the matching quest or Research documentation.
One player can join but another cannot The second player has a stale profile, different Java selection or an extra mod Have the failing player export a mod list, compare it with the manifest and launch the clean profile once.
Server starts but sidemod features are absent The jar is in the wrong directory, has an unmet dependency or is server-incompatible Stop the server, check the dependency and loader requirements, place the jar in mods, then restart and read the full startup log.

Keep the first error in the log, not only the final crash line. Later messages are often consequences of the original missing dependency or version conflict.

Updates, backups and routine administration

  • Announce a maintenance window before changing Minecraft, Pixelmon, the loader or a core sidemod.
  • Back up the world, player data, server configuration and quest or research data while the server is stopped.
  • Clone the server into a test directory and update the clone first.
  • Launch the test copy with the intended Java runtime, join with a clean client, and test world loading, catching, battles, generation and progression.
  • Record the new versions in the manifest and distribute the complete client revision.
  • Keep the previous server directory and backup until players have confirmed that the update works.
  • Never mix a new Pixelmon jar with an old loader or assume a configuration from another Minecraft family is compatible.

Launch checklist

  1. Confirm the exact Minecraft and Pixelmon pair from the version table.
  2. Install the matching NeoForge or Forge loader and required Java runtime.
  3. Prepare the client profile with the stated memory baseline and the approved manifest.
  4. Install the server loader, start once, accept the EULA and stop cleanly.
  5. Place the server Pixelmon jar in mods, then add approved sidemods and dependencies.
  6. Generate a fresh test world after all world-generation mods are present.
  7. Set Pixelmon configuration before players explore chunks that depend on those settings.
  8. Test the questline or Research system using the exact pack and release you will publish.
  9. Back up the working world and distribute the frozen client manifest.
  10. For a larger or always-on community, use hosting with enough resources and a tested backup process.

The dependable formula is simple: lock the versions, use the required Java and loader, build the server from the same manifest as the clients, generate terrain only after the world mods are installed, and identify whether your progression comes from a custom quest mod or the release’s Research system. Those checks prevent most failed joins and misleading quest instructions before players invest time in the world.
