Start with a datacenter proxy for ordinary public pages: it is generally cheaper. If the target blocks datacenter traffic or you need requests to appear to come from a particular country, try residential routing. For a browser session that spans multiple requests, keep a sticky IP rather than rotating addresses mid-session. A proxy changes the route and apparent egress IP; it does not fix invalid screenshot settings, permissions, selectors, storage failures, or exhausted quotas.

What an HTTP proxy changes during a screenshot

A proxy sits between your browser or HTTP client and the target website. The target sees traffic arriving from the proxy’s egress IP rather than directly from your machine or server. That can help when a site applies different access rules by IP address or geography. It does not make a browser indistinguishable from a person: sites can use other signals, and a proxy cannot guarantee that a capture will succeed.

Also distinguish a proxy from a screenshot service. A proxy routes traffic; it does not necessarily run a browser, execute JavaScript, wait for a page to render, or create an image. A managed screenshot API may provide those browser functions and may also offer a proxy option. A proxy-aware browser or client gives you more control over rendering, but leaves you responsible for capture timing and output handling.

Choose the proxy type that fits the target

Route When to try it Trade-off
Datacenter First attempt for an ordinary public page, or for a low-cost baseline capture. Typically cheaper, but more detectable and with less geographic coverage than residential routing. Browserless documents 2 units per MB for datacenter traffic versus 6 units per MB for residential traffic.
Residential When datacenter traffic is blocked, or when country-level routing realism matters. Typically costs more. WebScrapingAPI describes residential proxies as routing requests through residential rather than datacenter IP addresses.
Mobile Only when your target and permitted use specifically require mobile-network routing. The cited vendor guidance does not establish a general success-rate or price advantage for mobile proxies. ScreenshotOne recommends trying datacenter before residential or mobile proxies.

The unit rates above are Browserless’s documented traffic charges, not a universal proxy price or a total screenshot cost. Providers use different billing models, and no neutral cross-provider benchmark for success rate, latency, or total cost is published. Test against your own permitted workload before estimating production spend.

Keep a stable IP for multi-step browser sessions

Use a sticky session when the same browser visit makes several requests or carries cookies across steps. Browserless documents that changing IPs can retrigger Akamai and DataDome because sensors and cookies may be associated with the egress IP. Its documentation describes a sticky session as keeping one exit IP for the session rather than rotating it on every request.

Rotation can still make sense for independent, stateless captures if your provider and the target’s terms permit it. It is a poor default for a multi-step flow: a login, a sequence of page navigations, or any capture that depends on a prior cookie may stop looking like one consistent visit if the exit address changes. Session stickiness is not a bypass guarantee; the target may still challenge or deny the browser.

Pick the right implementation pattern

Managed screenshot API

Use this when you want a service to render the page and return a screenshot, and its proxy option covers your need. ScreenshotOne documents an HTTP proxy URL passed in its proxy parameter and recommends trying datacenter proxies before residential or mobile routes. Its guide says an external proxy provider can be used without changing the screenshot API. Confirm the provider’s required URL format, authentication syntax, supported locations, and billing in its own current documentation; those details are provider-specific.

Managed browser API

Use this when you need a hosted browser plus controls over proxy routing and capture behavior. Browserless documents proxy=residential or proxy=datacenter, with optional proxyCountry, proxyCity, and proxySticky=true. Its documentation says plain screenshot routes rotate by default unless sticky behavior is requested, while stealth-oriented routes use sticky sessions by default. Check the route-specific documentation rather than assuming defaults apply to every endpoint.

Your own browser or HTTP client

Use a proxy endpoint with a client that supports proxies when you need control over browser launch settings, viewport, cookies, waits, or capture timing. WebScrapingAPI documents residential proxy use with Playwright, Puppeteer, Scrapy, Python requests, cURL, and other proxy-aware clients. The proxy controls outbound IP identity; your browser or client still handles the page and screenshot. Obtain the endpoint and exact configuration from your proxy provider rather than copying a URL or credential format from another service.

A reliable capture workflow

  1. Confirm permission and scope. Check the target site’s terms and your authorization before automating. A proxy does not grant permission to access or collect a page.
  2. Establish a baseline. Capture a known public test page through a datacenter route. Record the HTTP status, final URL, screenshot dimensions, and whether the result is a challenge or interstitial rather than the intended page.
  3. Escalate only on evidence. If the target blocks the datacenter attempt and residential routing is permitted, test a stable residential session in the relevant country. Avoid changing IPs partway through a session that relies on cookies or browser state.
  4. Make rendering deterministic. Fix the viewport and locale, choose an appropriate wait-until behavior, and handle animations consistently. For dynamic pages, wait for the relevant selector or page state instead of assuming that an early screenshot represents a completed render.
  5. Validate the result before keeping it. Check for challenge-page markup or other interstitials, and fail the job rather than saving an error page as a successful screenshot. Retain the status, final URL, dimensions, and a failure reason for diagnosis.
  6. Protect credentials. Store proxy credentials in server-side secret storage and redact them from logs. Do not place them in browser-delivered JavaScript, public repositories, or URLs that are exposed to users.

Make the screenshot repeatable

IP choice is only one variable. A useful capture record should include the target URL, route type and location, whether the session was sticky, final URL, status, viewport, locale, wait condition, and whether a challenge appeared. If you change the proxy and the viewport or wait behavior at the same time, it becomes harder to identify which change affected the result.

For a page that loads content after the initial document response, wait for a meaningful selector or a provider-supported page-ready condition. Set the viewport before capture because it can change responsive layout and the amount of content visible. If a page uses authentication or cookies, use the screenshot service’s documented authentication and cookie controls or your own browser context; do not assume that routing through a proxy supplies or preserves that state.

Managed browser and screenshot services differ in what they render and expose. Cloudflare Browser Run documents full-page screenshots, viewport and selector controls, authentication, cookies, and wait behavior, while identifying requests as bots. That is an important distinction: browser controls can improve capture fidelity, but they do not promise that the target will treat the request as a normal human visit.

For public-page captures where you want stable output, also review how the service handles locale, rendering defaults, caching, and unsafe targets. Webstractor documents fixed locale and rendering settings, caching of successful captures for up to 30 days, and rejection of private networks and security interstitials. A cache can reduce repeated work, but a cached image is not evidence that a new live visit would still succeed.

Troubleshoot failures by symptom

  • The screenshot shows a CAPTCHA or challenge page. The target may be rejecting the route or browser signals. Verify that the page is a challenge using its content and final URL; if permitted, test a residential route with a stable session. Do not treat the challenge image as the requested page.
  • The capture changes or fails midway through a multi-page flow. Check whether the proxy rotates between requests. Use a sticky session when the flow depends on cookies or state associated with one egress IP.
  • The result is blank or incomplete. Check the final URL, status, viewport, wait condition, and whether the required selector ever appeared. A proxy does not repair a selector typo, slow rendering, or a page that failed to load.
  • The proxy connection is rejected. Confirm the endpoint, protocol, credentials, and any location or session options against the provider’s documentation. Keep secrets out of logs while checking them. A valid proxy connection and a successful target-page response are separate checks.
  • The page renders, but the image is not saved. Investigate the screenshot service’s response handling, output format, and destination storage separately from proxy routing. A proxy cannot fix local disk, object-storage, or file-permission errors.
  • The service rejects the request or stops accepting captures. Validate API parameters, permissions, selectors, and account quota. Proxy changes do not resolve malformed requests or exhausted limits.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean screenshot of a page that is reachable without a custom proxy, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its API facts do not establish a proxy parameter, so do not assume it can route a capture through your own proxy; use the proxy-capable pattern above when that routing is required. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details.

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
