Are you looking for the best laptop for playing games? If yes, you should consider taking a look at this HP Omen vs Alienware comparison.

HP Omen vs Alienware: At First Glance

Anyone familiar with Alienware laptops knows how well these laptops deliver the best experience for gamers. With the Alienware line, Dell has been offering some of the best graphics cards and best CPUs for gaming.

With respect to that, the Dell Alienware m15 R6 certainly earns its name as a member of the family. Considering the range of hardware components wrapped up in its small frame, I’m guessing Dell has delivered yet again.

However, you would have to pay an expensive sum of $1,659.98 to enjoy what this laptop has to offer. Surprisingly, at a starting price of $1,849.00, the HP Omen 15T with a lesser hardware configuration range costs even more.

Regardless, I know that the value of a laptop lies within more than just its configuration. This makes me curious to discover the tricks the HP Omen 15T has up its sleeves to justify its price tag.

Let’s take a look at both laptops to discover what sets them apart.

HP Omen vs Alienware: Design, Dimension, and Weight

One thing common to gaming laptops designs is the visual evolution they have all gone through over the years. Call it a design-themed maturation or whatever, but there’s been a small – if not large – move away from the extra fancy design towards a simplistic one.

Most new gaming laptops now appeal to people who don’t fancy RBG lights and angular design lines. If you are one of these people, you will appreciate both the HP Omen 15T and Dell Alienware m15 R6’s design.

This doesn’t mean these two laptops have a similar design. While some of their design features are quite similar, their overall design theme is very different.

For instance, the HP Omen 15T has a subtle aesthetic that gives it a professional look. It’s as though the Omen line just suddenly enrolled into business school.

Unlike the previous HP Omen 15T laptops that actively sought after gamers with angular lines and bleeding RGB lights, this model doesn’t. This HP Omen 15T laptop comes with conventionally squared-off edges and HP has reduced its color accents.

They’ve also reduced its branding to a simple Omen lettering and a small shiny diamond logo. Depending on the angle of the reflection of light on this logo, its color can gently transition from blue to purple.

Overall, the simple branding on the lid complements the laptop’s black finish in such a way that it exudes a sophisticated aura. Unfortunately, the lid’s tendency to retain fingerprints and smudges tends to betray its sophisticated look.

Regardless, the HP Omen 15T is simple and stylish.

While the HP Omen 15T features a big transition from a fancy design to a completely simple one, the Alienware m15 R6 stays in the middle. Though Dell has toned down the design style of the Alienware m15 R6, it still looks more like a gaming laptop than the HP Omen 15T does.

Unlike what HP did with the Omen 15T, Dell hasn’t reduced the branding on the Alienware m15 R6. The Alienware m15 R6’s lid features a Dark Side of the Moon finish with a big “15” digit neatly inscribed on the bottom right side.

Towards the center-top of the lid, there’s an Alienware logo that powers up when you turn on the laptop. This logo is one of those design features that make the Alienware m15 R6 look very much like a gaming laptop.

In fact, the entire branding on the Alienware m15 R6 does not help the laptop keep a simple look like the HP Omen 15T. Nonetheless, the branding harmonizes with the lid’s finishing just like the way the HP Omen 15T’s branding does.

You will also be pleased to know that the Alienware m15 R6’s lid doesn’t retain fingerprints like the HP Omen 15T’s. However, they do share a similar problem.

This problem is about their build quality. Unlike their design, both laptops’ builds aren’t, particularly the best.

To give more detail, the HP Omen 15T and Alienware m15 R6 are built with a different mix of materials. Though the HP Omen 15T’s overall build is mainly plastic, it features a mixture of aluminum for the keyboard deck and palm rest.

Due to its major plastic build, there’s some flex to the HP Omen 15T’s lid. Similarly, the Alienware m15 R6 is built with a different mix of materials.

Dell builds this laptop with aluminum, magnesium alloy, and plastic. Like the HP Omen 15T, most of the parts of the Alienware m15 R6 feature a plastic build.

As a result, there’s a little bit of flex on the lid when you press down on it.

Though there’s noticeable flex in both laptops’ lids, their hinges are very sturdy. Both laptops’ hinges are firm enough to help support the lid tightly, but not firm enough for you to open the lid with one hand.

There’s a difference in both laptops’ hinges, though. While the HP Omen 15T has a well-spaced dual hinge, the Alienware m15 R6’s hinge extends from the middle to almost the two side edges of the laptop.

Below both laptops’ hinges, there’s an exhaust vent that takes up the entire space on their back edge. While the Alienware m15 R6 leaves room for a few ports on this exhaust vent, the HP Omen 15T’s vent doesn’t feature any ports at all.

In addition, Dell also used the vent to add style to the Alienware m15 R6’s design. With its trapezoidal shape, the heat vent makes the back edge of the Alienware m15 R6 look like the exhaust of a jet engine.

As a result, opening the Alienware m15 R6 halfway makes it look like a spacecraft getting ready to launch.

Dell also added an LED ring around the border of the vents to add an extra visual flair to the laptop. This LED lighting is the same as the Alienware logo on the lid.

Though the HP Omen 15T’s heat vent also has a trapezoidal shape, it doesn’t have a showy design. Unlike the Alienware m15 R6’s vent, the HP Omen 15T’s vent doesn’t add any extra style to its design, and neither does it have LED lighting.

This conforms with the laptop’s overall simplistic styling.

Moving on, the HP Omen 15T’s simple styling remains the same when you get to the interior of the laptop. With its lid opened, you can barely tell that the HP Omen 15T is a gaming laptop.

Aside from the fact that the palm rest and touchpad raise up to an angle slightly above the keyboard deck, every other thing is normal.

The Alienware m15 R6 also has a simple design when you get to its interior. What you get is a regular laptop kind of deck.

This remains so until you turn on the laptop. When you turn on the Dell Alienware m15 R6, you will discover that the keyboard also features the same LED lighting as the one on the logo and vent borders.

To be precise, the Alienware m15 R6’s keyboard has a four-zone RGB backlighting that spread across its keys. Unfortunately, this laptop doesn’t come with the “per-key lighting” feature.

As a result, there are limits to the kind of effects you can create. With the Alienware Command Centre app, you can animate each zone of the backlight and set them to any color of the rainbow.

When you power up the HP Omen 15T too, you will immediately notice that it also features a four-zone RGB backlighting. However, unlike with the Alienware m15 R6, you can also choose a standard white backlight feature when you want to buy this laptop.

In addition to that, the HP Omen 15T also comes with a per-key RGB backlight which you can customize through the Omen software.

Regarding their keyboard layout, the keyboard keys on both laptops are well spaced. The keys on their keyboards spread from side to side, leaving just a little bit of space on either side of their keyboard deck area.

On the HP Omen 15T’s keyboard, the arrow keys sit alone and they don’t serve other special functions. Also, there’s a space dedicated for the Insert, Home, Pg Up, and media keys.

HP also provides dedicated keys for the Omen Gaming Hub and calculator. Strangely, HP has also placed the power button next to the F12 key.

For someone that’s already used to having a dedicated space for the power button, getting used to this laptop’s power button may take some time.

On the Alienware m15 R6, there’s also a wide range of key arrangements similar to the ones on the HP Omen 15T. The Alienware m15 R6’s keyboard also features a bunch of dedicated media keys and full-size cursor keys.

In contrast to the HP Omen 15T’s power button placement, the Alienware m15 R6’s power button still has a dedicated space. The power button on the Alienware m15 R6 sits alone at the top right corner of the keyboard deck.

In terms of usage, the Alienware m15 R6’s keys feel great. Its keys have a nice travel distance of 1.8 mm.

For those that are not familiar with what key travel means, I will quickly explain. Key travel is the distance a key travels from its resting position to the point where it fully touches the bottom to register click inputs.

That being said, there’s a satisfying amount of deep key action in the Alienware m15 R6’s keys. Each stroke of the key offers an unusually precise mix of springiness and a clicky actuation point.

The result of this mixture is an awesome typing experience.

You could say the same for the HP Omen 15T’s keyboard. With a 1.5 mm key travel, the keys are quite responsive.

They offer a pleasant amount of clickiness without being too loud. Overall, they are excellent for gaming and general typing activities.

I will now compare the touchpads on both gaming laptops.

Measuring 4.5 x 2.9-inch, the touchpad below the HP Omen 15T’s keyboard is large enough to enhance productivity. In use, it is extremely sensitive enough to give a fast response when navigating, scrolling, and clicking.

It is also excellent for performing multitouch gestures like a two-finger scroll, three-finger taps, and pinch to zoom.

The Alienware m15 R6’s touchpad isn’t bad either. However, it feels too small and cramped up.

It feels as though Dell didn’t have as much regard for the touchpad as they did for the laptop’s keyboard. Nonetheless, the touchpad is fair enough for regular use.

It is quite responsive and sensitive to multitouch gestures.

Above the Alienware m15 R6 and HP Omen 15T’s keyboards, there’s a stylized grille that spreads to either side of the keyboard area.

On the Alienware m15 R6, this grille serves as the covering for the laptop’s speaker system. For a gaming laptop, the Alienware m15 R6’s speaker is quite loud.

However, the loud sound it produces doesn’t come out with enough bass. The speaker’s bass sound is fair enough for watching movies in a fairly large room, but when you try listening to music, it becomes very noticeable.

While the grille on the Alienware covers where the laptop’s speaker is located, the HP Omen 15T’s grille is just for decoration. The HP Omen 15T’s actual speakers are positioned on the angular planes on the underside of either side of the palm rest.

This laptop’s Bang & Olufsen-tuned speakers produce loud sounds. However, they lack adequate bass like the Alienware m15 R6’s speakers.

Moving to the upper part of the Alienware m15 R6, you get a set of absolutely delightful display options to choose from. You can buy your Alienware m15 R6 with a 15.6-inch display that offers an FHD screen resolution of 1920 x 1080.

Alternatively, you can buy the Alienware m15 R6 with a 15.6-inch display that offers a QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440.

Our review unit features the QHD display panel. With this panel, the Alienware m15 R6’s display is nothing short of excellent.

It produces bright colors with an incredible amount of accuracy. This laptop’s display can offer a satisfying maximum brightness level of 400 nits.

In addition, the display’s viewing angles are also great.

The HP Omen 15T’s display is not bad either. With an FHD resolution of 1920 x 1080, its 15.6-inch screen also offers good color accuracy.

It can also get bright enough to offer a maximum brightness of 300 nits. Overall, the colors on the display have a vibrant pop to them.

I will also like to add that I like the fact that both laptops’ display bezels are quite slim. Though their bottom bezels are quite thick, I don’t find them to be excessive or annoying.

Their bottom bezels aren’t the only thick things about these laptops. Each of the two laptops as a whole is quite thick.

While the HP Omen 15T measures 357.8 x 239.7 x 22.6 mm (W x D x H), the Alienware m15 R6 measures 356.2 x 272.5 x 19.2 mm (W x D x H). Normally, one would consider these laptops to be too huge, but considering the range of hardware configurations inside their chassis, their sizes aren’t so bad.

Likewise, their weights aren’t too far from the standard weight for a gaming laptop. The HP Omen 15T with its 2458.4 g weight is still within the 2500 g standard for gaming laptops’ weight.

On the other hand, the Alienware m15 R6 slightly exceeds it. It weighs 2690 g.

In terms of input options, both laptops offer a good selection of ports. On the left side of the HP Omen 15T’s deck, there’s an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, a USB-A port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a charging port.

Look to the right side and you’ll find a USB-C port, a Mini-DisplayPort, and two extra USB-A ports.

On the Alienware m15 R6, you get two USB Gen 2 ports on the right, while its left side accommodates an audio jack and an Ethernet port. Turn to the back edge of the laptop and you will be able to locate the rest of the ports.

There’s a 1 USB 3.2 Gen 1 port as well as a USB Type-C port that comes with Thunderbolt 4.

Overall, the design of the HP Omen 15T and Alienware m15 R6 is nice. In their manufacturers’ way, both laptops align – at least a little – to modern gaming laptop design trends.

Since beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, making a choice between both laptops’ designs will ultimately come down to preference. That being said, I will award an equal score of eight to both laptops in this HP Omen vs Alienware design comparison.

HP Omen vs Alienware: Processor (CPU) Performance

While the HP Omen 15T features an AMD-based processor, the Alienware m15 R6 comes with a processor from Intel’s Tiger Lake series.

To give more detail, the HP Omen 15T features an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor. This processor offers a base frequency of 2.90 GHz and a maximum boost frequency of 4.20 GHz.

On the other hand, the Alienware m15 R6 comes with an Intel Core i9-11900H processor. This processor has a base frequency of 2.50 GHz and a maximum boost frequency of 4.90 GHz.

With the processor configurations I highlighted above, both laptops are incredible performers. They can easily handle your regular computing operations without breaking a sweat.

From regular computing operations like word processing and web surfing to more intensive ones like video editing, these laptops are extremely capable. The HP Omen 15T and Alienware m15 R6 are powerhouses that you can trust with your computing operations.

With all these said, to properly compare the processor performances of the two gaming laptops, I will now share their Cinebench R15 benchmark test results.

On the Cinebench R15 benchmark test, these laptops displayed impressive performance results. In case you are not familiar with the Cinebench R15 benchmark, I will explain what it is.

Basically, the Cinebench R15 is a benchmark that tests the performance efficiency of a laptop’s processor. It does this by subjecting either one or more than one of the processor’s cores to a processor-intensive workload.

When it tests only one of a processor’s cores, the result of the processor’s performance is known as the single-core score. For the aspect where it tests the processor with more than one of its cores in operation, the performance result is known as the multi-core score.

On the single-core aspect test, the HP Omen 15T achieved a score of 188 points, while the Alienware m15 R6 did better with a score of 226 points. The Alienware m15 R6 also outscored the HP Omen 15T in the multi-core aspect.

While the HP Omen 15T scored 1909 points, the Alienware m15 R6 scored 2134 points.

These benchmark test results show that the Alienware m15 R6 is slightly more powerful than the HP Omen 15T. As a result, the Alienware m15 R6 takes this round.

Therefore, Alienware m15 R6 scores a nine in this HP Omen vs Alienware processor performance comparison. Meanwhile, the HP Omen 15T scores an eight.

HP Omen vs Alienware: Memory (RAM) Performance

The memory configurations you get for these two laptops are quite different. I will give more details as I proceed with this section.

Firstly, HP equips the Omen 15T with an 8 GB DDR4 SDRAM. Since HP provides two RAM slots on the Omen 15T’s motherboard, you can use the other slot to upgrade the laptop’s 8 GB RAM configuration.

However, HP doesn’t support a RAM size beyond 16 GB for this laptop.

With the Alienware m15 R6, you get to choose between two memory configuration options. You can buy the laptop with an 8 GB DDR4 RAM that comes with two slots.

Since it comes with two slots, you can increase its size to a maximum supported size of 32 GB.

Better still, you can configure your Alienware m15 R6 primarily with 32 GB DDR4 RAM. The beautiful thing is that you can upgrade this RAM configuration too since it also comes with 2 slots.

You can upgrade this memory configuration to a maximum supported size of 64 GB!

For the record, our Alienware m15 R6 comparison unit comes with the 32 GB RAM option. Meanwhile, our HP Omen 15T review unit features the upgraded version of the 8 GB RAM – the 16 GB size.

In use, the HP Omen 15T and Alienware m15 R6 are remarkable multitasking laptops. They are incredibly efficient at running simultaneous operations without encountering performance difficulties.

For instance, both laptops can handle a workflow that involves 30 browser tabs. Where some of the tabs may be streaming YouTube videos, Twitch, or running Twitter, you will barely notice any disturbance in their performance.

Due to how both laptops can efficiently handle real-world memory-intensive tasks, it is difficult to clearly differentiate their performance capabilities. To discover how their memory performance differs, I looked up their PCMark 10 benchmark performance results.

For clarity, the PCMark 10 is a benchmark that tests a laptop’s memory performance efficiency. It carries out this test by simulating office-centric tasks such as web surfing, word processing, spreadsheet package preparation, and video conferencing.

At the end of the test, the benchmark gives a definite score to rate how well the laptop performed. Generally, the higher the score, the better the performance of the laptop.

On this test, the HP Omen 15T scored 5766 points. Meanwhile, the Alienware m15 R6 did better with a score of 7177 points.

As a result, the Alienware m15 R6 claims this round as well. Since it outscored the HP Omen 15T in the benchmark test, it is evident that it has a superior memory performance capability.

With that being said, the Alienware m15 R6 scores a nine in this HP Omen vs Alienware memory performance comparison. Meanwhile, the HP Omen 15T scores an eight.

HP Omen vs Alienware: Storage Options and Performance

In terms of storage, the configuration you get with the HP Omen 15T is very different from what you get with the Alienware m15 R6.

HP equips the Omen 15T with a 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD storage. Apart from this main configuration, HP also offers a multi-format SD media card reader for expanding your storage

On the other hand, Dell offers its potential customers the option to buy the Alienware m15 R6 with one of the two storage configuration options they provide. You can either buy this laptop with 1TB NVMe SSD storage or 2 TB NVMe SSD storage.

To be clear, our Alienware m15 R6 review unit features 2 TB NVMe SSD storage.

In use, the storage configuration on both the HP Omen 15T and Alienware m15 R6 is incredibly fast. They can also help to speed up general computing operations.

For instance, in the file transfer test record I retrieved, both laptops were able to copy a 4.97 GB file at blistering copy rates. To give more detail, the HP Omen 15T copied the file in 6 seconds at a rate of 968 MBps.

Meanwhile, the Alienware m15 R6 copied the same file in 4 seconds at a rate of 996 MBps.

To further compare the storage performance of both laptops, I also took down records of both laptops’ performance in the CrystalDiskMark test. To be clear, the CrystalDiskMark is a benchmark tool that checks the read and write speeds of a laptop’s storage drive.

If you don’t like tech terms, in computer terms, “read” typically means copying or opening a file. On the contrary, the term “write” refers to saving a file.

It is also important to mention that, on the CrystalDiskMark test, the higher the MBps value, the better.

On this test, the HP Omen 15T recorded sequential read and write speeds of 2220 MBps and 2677 MBps respectively. Meanwhile, the Alienware m15 R6 had a sequential read speed of 3552 MBps and a sequential write speed of 3174.3 MBps.

From all the test results we’ve considered so far, the Alienware m15 R6 is undoubtedly the better laptop in terms of storage performance. It also has offers better storage configuration options.

Hence, the Alienware m15 R6 scores a nine in this HP Omen vs Alienware storage performance comparison. The HP Omen 15T, on the other hand, scores an eight.

HP Omen vs Alienware: Graphics Card Performance

HP Omen 15T and Alienware m15 R6 offer a range of configuration options for their GPU.

To start with, you can buy the HP Omen 15T with either an integrated AMD Radeon Graphics or a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU.

If you buy the HP Omen 15T with the AMD Radeon Graphics you don’t get a dedicated VRAM along with it. However, if you buy your HP Omen 15T laptop with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU, you also get a 6 GB GDDR6 dedicated VRAM.

In case you don’t know the essence of the dedicated VRAM, I will quickly explain it to you. The dedicated VRAM helps to aid the performance capability of your GPU.

So if your laptop comes with a dedicated VRAM, you can expect its graphics performance to be significantly better.

Still on the HP Omen 15T’s GPU configurations, the AMD Radeon Graphics GPU can offer you a boost GPU frequency of 1600 MHz. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get accurate information on the base frequency at which this graphics card operates.

With the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU, you get a base frequency of 1500 MHz and a boost frequency of 1770 MHz.

Moving on, let’s consider the GPU configuration options Dell offers for the Alienware m15 R6. You can buy the Alienware m15 R6 with either an integrated Intel UHD Graphics GPU or a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU.

While the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU comes with an 8 GB GDDR6 dedicated VRAM, the Intel UHD Graphics GPU doesn’t come with any.

Furthermore, the Intel UHD Graphics GPU runs at a base frequency of 350 MHz and it can offer a boost frequency of 1450 MHz. Meanwhile, the GeForce RTX 3080 GPU has a base frequency of 1110 MHz and a boost frequency of 1545 MHz.

To avoid confusion, you should know that our HP Omen review unit features the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU. Meanwhile, our Alienware m15 R6 review unit features the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU.

There’s no doubting these two laptops’ capabilities when it comes to running games. The HP Omen 15T and Alienware m15 R6 can play any AAA title game you throw at them.

At maximum gaming settings, you will still be able to play most intensive games at frame rates of at least 30 frames per second. For more details, let’s consider some of the real-world gaming tests results for these two laptops.

At high gaming settings, the HP Omen 15T was able to run The Witcher 3 at frame rates of 107 frames per second. The Alienware m15 R6 handled the game better with frame rates of 149 frames per second.

In addition, the HP Omen 15T could run Dota 2 Reborn at high settings with frame rates of 109 frames per second. Meanwhile, the Alienware m15 R6 ran the game at the same high setting with frame rates of 144 frames per second.

On the X-Plane 11.11 game, the Alienware m15 R6 still offered better frame rates compared to what the HP Omen 15T had to offer. While the Alienware m15 R6 ran the game at 87.9 frames per second, the HP Omen 15T ran the game at 68.8 frames per second.

Though from these test results, it is clear that the Alienware m15 R6 is better for playing games, the performance of the HP Omen 15T is credible.

When I proceeded to gather their benchmark test results, I discovered that these two laptops continued to display impressive power. The benchmark test result I sought out is known as the 3DMark 11 benchmark test.

The 3DMark 11 is a benchmark tool that tests how well a laptop’s graphics card can handle graphically intensive tasks. After the test, this benchmark assigns a value to describe the level of performance the laptop can offer.

Generally, the higher the laptop scores, the better the performance it can offer.

On this test, the HP Omen 15T achieved an impressive score of 20,535 points. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, the Alienware m15 R6 did much better with a mind-blowing score of 38,674 points.

From the real-world gaming tests to the benchmark test, it is evident that both laptops are gaming monsters. However, it is also clear that the Alienware m15 R6 is more powerful than the HP Omen 15T.

For this reason, the Alienware m15 R6 wins in this aspect. All things considered, Alienware m15 R6 scores a nine in this HP Omen vs Alienware graphics performance comparison.

Meanwhile, the HP Omen 15T scores an eight.

HP Omen vs Alienware: Battery Life and Performance
