Dell Inspiron 1525: At First Glance

In the early days, Dell was mostly known for manufacturing bulky laptops. However, in 2008, when the brand decided to put a hold on their “bulky” trend, they rounded it up with the distinctive Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop.

The Dell Inspiron 1525 is a 14-year old (as of 2022) laptop that offers adequate performance and a distinctive bulky look. Furthermore, this laptop comes with so many good features that make it exceptional among its predecessors and similarly priced laptops.

Specifically, the large number of ports that the laptop offers made it the most sought after as of the time of its release. However, is the laptop’s impressive port selection enough for buyers nowadays to purchase the laptop?

Well, you have to read through this review to find out.

Dell Inspiron 1525: Design, Dimension, and Weight

In terms of design, the Dell Inspiron 1525 is anything but boring. To be more specific, as a 2008 laptop, this Dell laptop features a unique design that you will barely see nowadays.

Also, the laptop comes in numerous color variants. Specifically, the Dell Inspiron 1525 is available in flamingo pink, red, yellow micro satin, and matte black.

The most distinctive color and design style that this laptop offers is the combination of black and silver called the “commotion pattern”. Basically, the plastic chassis of the laptop features a glossy-black finish while the interior has bright silver accents.

Also, the laptop’s lid comes with a silver “Dell” logo neatly placed in the center. Moreover, this lid features a unique pattern of irregular boxes scattered across its surface.

Upon opening this lid, you will see the Dell Inspiron 1525’s 15.4-inch display that offers a resolution of XGA (1280 x 800). Interestingly, this display is made with a TrueLife panel.

One of the major advantages of having a display made with a TrueLife panel is that the display will offer a vivid representation of colors and good contrast. However, due to the bulky build of this laptop, its display is surrounded by thick bezels.

Nevertheless, the bottom bezel features a “Dell” logo while the top bezel houses an HD webcam. In terms of performance, this HD webcam works perfectly for casual video calls and regular skyping.

However, anything concerning taking pictures, it’s a “no-no” for this laptop’s webcam. This is because the pictures that the webcam generates tend to be blurry and washed out.

Moving on, the Dell Inspiron 1525 comes with a standard QWERTY keyboard. Although this keyboard is similar to that of its predecessor (Inspiron 1520), it is way better.

This is because the Dell Inspiron 1525’s keyboard is firm with practically no flex. In addition to that, the keys on the keyboard are well-spaced and they feature excellent key travel.

Hence, the Dell Inspiron 1525 keyboard should be able to offer a comfortable typing experience. Just in case you are curious, key travel is the distance between a key’s resting point and full depression.

Below the keyboard, you will find a portable touchpad that features a set of dedicated click buttons. Although this touchpad isn’t particularly big, it offers a smooth surface that allows for easy navigation.

In addition to its adequate keyboard and touchpad, the Dell Inspiron 1525 comes with various types of ports. Specifically, this laptop features 2 USB Type-A ports, a VGA port, an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and a Kingston lock slot on its left side.

Moreover, you will find two audio jacks on the front side of the laptop. Meanwhile, on the right side, this laptop features two more USB Type-A ports and a DVD drive.

Measuring 357 x 256 x 37.0 mm (W x D x H) and weighing 2700 g, the Dell Inspiron 1525 is pretty heavy. However, when compared with other laptops in its category, this Dell laptop weighs significantly less.

For example, the Acer Aspire 6920G measures 384.3 x 274.5 x 39.37 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 3501.7 g. Also, the HP Pavilion HDX 9320EG measures 432 x 540 x 59 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 7100 g

In conclusion, the Dell Inspiron 1525 offers a unique design and a large number of ports. However, even though the laptop weighs less than most of its competitors, it is still considered heavyweight, weighing 2700 g.

Hence, I will be rating the Dell Inspiron 1525 an eight out of ten in this design review section.

Dell Inspiron 1525: Processor (CPU) Performance

For the processor, the Dell Inspiron 1525 employs an Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor. In terms of speed, this processor has a standard frequency of 2.10 GHz.

Furthermore, this Intel processor is a mid-range dual-core processor that offers 3 MB cache memory. Moreover, thanks to Hyperthreading, this processor should be able to process up to four tasks simultaneously.

Also, even though the processor isn’t the most powerful out there, it is strong enough to handle basic computing tasks effectively. Therefore, with this processor, the Dell Inspiron 1525 should be able to smoothly handle word processing, web browsing, and video streaming.

Also, this laptop will be able to perform some light multitasking. However, heavy-duty tasks like video editing on Photoshop will cause this laptop to slow down significantly.

To confirm the performance of the Dell Inspiron 1525 with this CPU, I will briefly examine its Cinebench R10 test results. Cinebench R10 is a benchmark tool that tests the efficiency of a computer’s processor.

It does this by measuring the capabilities of the processor’s cores when they are in use. Thus, the Cinebench R10 offers two test results including the single-core test result and multi-core test result.

In case you are wondering, the single-core test measures when just one core of the processor is in use. The multi-core test, however, measures when all the processor’s cores are in use.

Before mentioning the Dell Inspiron 1525’s results, I would like to state that a high score on the single-core and multi-core tests indicates a good processor performance.

Thus, according to the Cinebench R20 test result, the Dell Inspiron 1525 recorded 2310 points in the single-core test. Also, this Dell laptop recorded 4215 points in the multi-core test.

Comparatively, the Dell Inspiron 1525 has a better processor performance than the Acer Aspire 6920G. To be more specific, the Acer Aspire 6920G recorded 2217 points in the Cinebench R10 single-core test.

Also, the Acer laptop recorded 4102 points in the multi-core test. Following that, it is worth mentioning that the Acer Aspire 6920G also uses a dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor.

In conclusion, the Dell Inspiron 1525 offers a decent processor for basic computing tasks. Also, this laptop performed better than one of its competitors on a processor benchmark test.

Therefore, I will rate the Dell Inspiron 1525 a seven out of ten in this processor review section.

Dell Inspiron 1525: Memory (RAM) Performance

To begin with, the Dell Inspiron 1525 features two memory slots and comes with a standard memory of 2 GB RAM. However, this laptop supports a maximum memory capacity of 4 GB RAM, which is quite limited.

Notwithstanding, with 4 GB RAM, the Dell Inspiron 1525 should offer a decent multitasking performance. Basically, with this amount of memory, this Dell laptop should be able to run 10 Chrome tabs simultaneously without lagging.

However, switching between the Chrome tabs may cause the laptop to slow down a bit. Also, if you open more than 10 Chrome tabs on the laptop, its performance will drop significantly.

That said, to further ascertain the performance of the Dell Inspiron 1525, let us now discuss its PCMark 05 benchmark test result. For clarity, PCMark 05 is a benchmark test that measures the performance of a computer’s memory by emulating everyday productivity tasks.

These tasks include emailing, web surfing, video conferencing, and word processing. Moreover, a high score on the above benchmark test equates to good memory performance.

So, based on the PCMark 05 results, the Dell Inspiron 1525 recorded 4197 points. When compared with other laptops in its category, this Dell laptop performed way better.

To give more details, the laptop outperformed the Dell Vostro 1710 which scored 3596 points. Also, the Dell Inspiron 1525 performed better than the Acer Aspire 6920G which score 3498 points on the PCMark 05 test.

In conclusion, the Dell Inspiron 1525 offers limited memory capacity. However, the laptop performed better on a memory benchmark test than most laptops in its class.

Hence, the Dell Inspiron 1525 deserves nothing less than a seven out of ten in this memory review section.

Dell Inspiron 1525: Storage Option and Performance

The Dell Inspiron 1525 comes with an HDD storage type and supports a maximum storage capacity of 250 GB. Nowadays, a max storage capacity of 250 GB is very limited.

It is worth mentioning that when Dell Inspiron 1525 was released in 2008, 250 GB was okay.

However, I doubt that this amount of storage space will be enough for most users today, talkless of storage-hungry users. However, before you get totally disappointed, just know that this laptop offers an SD card reader for storage expansion.

Nevertheless, if you feel that also isn’t enough, you can always purchase an external hard drive with the laptop. However, as we all know, that comes at an additional cost.

Now moving to this laptop’s storage performance, HDD (Hard Disk Drive) offers slow speed compared to other storage drives like SSD (Solid State Drive). To prove this, we will now be examining the Dell Inspiron 1525’s results on an HD Tune test.

The HD Tune test is a benchmark test that measures the minimum, average, and maximum transfer speeds of a computer’s storage drive. Moreover, the higher the “MBps” value on this test, the faster the computer’s storage drive.

So, based on the HD Tune test results, the Dell Inspiron 1525 has a minimum transfer rate of 21.2 MBps. Also, this laptop has an average and maximum transfer rate of 33.3 MBps and 43.1 MBps respectively.

In comparison, the Dell Vostro 1710 which also uses HDD storage performed better than the Dell Inspiron 1525 on this HD Tune test. To give more details, according to the test results, the Dell Vostro 1710 recorded a minimum transfer speed of 28.7 MBps.

Also, this Dell laptop recorded an average and maximum transfer speed of 47.9 MBps and 59.9 MBps respectively.

In summary, the Dell Inspiron 1525 offers a limited storage capacity of 250 HDD. Also, this laptop was outperformed by one of its competitors on a storage benchmark test

Hence, I will be rating the Dell Inspiron 1525 a six out of ten in this storage review section.

Dell Inspiron 1525: Graphics Card Performance

When it comes to the GPU, the Dell Inspiron 1525 features an Intel GMA X3100 graphics card. In terms of speed, this Intel graphics card offers a standard frequency of 500 MHz.

Furthermore, the graphics card is an integrated graphics card that is embedded into the laptop’s processor. Hence, this Intel GMA X3100 graphics card shares the same memory as the processor to carry out graphics-related tasks.

As a result, the graphics card won’t be powerful enough to handle graphics-intensive apps and games. However, with this GPU, the Dell Inspiron 1525 should be able to run a few outdated games under low graphics settings.

For example, when playing F.E.A.R under low graphics settings, this laptop delivered a playable frame rate of 48 fps (frame per second).

To further verify the laptop’s GPU performance, I will now be highlighting its 3DMark 03 benchmark test result. Briefly, 3DMark 03 is a benchmark tool that evaluates and calculates the graphics rendering abilities of a computer’s GPU.

Furthermore, the higher the score on this test, the better the graphics performance of the computer. So, based on the 3DMark 03 test results, the Dell Inspiron 1525 scored 1704 points.

Comparatively, the Dell Inspiron 1525 performed slightly better than the HP Compaq 6720s which uses an Intel GMA X3100 GPU. To be more specific, on the 3DMark 03 test, the HP Compaq 6720s scored 1169 points.

Therefore, I will be rating the Dell Inspiron 1525 a seven out of ten in this graphics review section.

Dell Inspiron 1525: Battery Life and Performance

For battery, the Dell Inspiron 1525 features a 6-cell 56 Whrs lithium-ion battery. According to Dell, this battery is estimated to have a runtime of 5 hours.

To validate this claim, I will now go over the Dell Inspiron 1525’s battery run-down test result. This battery rundown test involves web surfing on the laptop while its brightness level is at 70%.

At the end of this battery rundown test, the Dell Inspiron 1525 delivered a battery life of 2 hours and 26 minutes. This battery life is very poor and it isn’t even close to Dell’s 5 hours claim.

However, the laptop’s battery life is slightly longer than the Dell Vostro 1710’s battery life. To give more details, on the battery rundown test, the Dell Vostro 1710 delivered a battery life of 2 hours and 21 minutes.

All in all, I will be rating the Dell Inspiron 1525 a seven out of ten in this battery review section.
