The HP OfficeJet Pro 8125 is the stronger fit if you want a larger paper tray and automatic document feeder (ADF). The Brother MFC-J1012DW may suit a lighter workload, but Brother’s Canadian product page lists it as discontinued, so local availability and support matter before you buy. Neither manufacturer’s published specifications establish a winner for print quality or running cost.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8125 vs Brother MFC-J1012DW at a glance

Both are color inkjet all-in-one printers for printing, copying, and scanning, and both support automatic two-sided printing. Their clearest documented differences are paper capacity, ADF size, advertised speed, ink family, and the Brother model’s regional availability status. The figures below come from manufacturer pages, not a controlled head-to-head test.

Feature HP OfficeJet Pro 8125 Brother MFC-J1012DW
Functions Print, copy, scan; color inkjet all-in-one. HP specifications Print, copy, scan; wireless color inkjet all-in-one. Brother product page

These are HP figures for different modes, not results from a shared test with Brother. HP specifications Up to 17 ppm black and 9 ppm color; the cited product page does not state an equivalent mode to HP’s ISO figures. Do not treat the rates as directly comparable test results. The table describes manufacturer-published specifications. It does not establish how quickly either printer will finish a particular job, how reliably a unit will operate over time, or which one produces better-looking text and photos.

Which printer has the larger paper tray and ADF?

The OfficeJet Pro 8125 has the larger stated capacity for both the main paper supply and the automatic document feeder. Its input tray holds 225 sheets, compared with 150 for the Brother. The HP ADF accepts 35 sheets; the Brother ADF accepts 20. Those differences are most useful when you print larger batches or copy and scan stacks of single-sided originals. They mean fewer reloads for a batch of the same size, not a guarantee that the printer will finish the job sooner.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What the input-tray difference means in practice

For a household that prints occasionally, either tray may be adequate: the relevant question is how often you want to refill it and whether you keep different paper types ready. The HP’s larger capacity gives it more room for a longer print run before replenishment. If you regularly switch between plain and photo paper, however, a larger tray does not remove the need to manage the media loaded for each job.

What the ADF difference means in practice

An ADF lets you feed a batch of pages for scanning or copying without placing each page on the scanner glass individually. The HP can stage a larger batch than the Brother according to the stated capacities. If you frequently process documents longer than the Brother’s 20-page feeder can hold, expect to divide the job into batches or handle additional pages manually.

ADF capacity is not the same as duplex scanning. The cited HP Ireland specifications say its ADF scans one side only, so two-sided originals require a separate pass. The reviewed Brother material does not establish whether this exact model scans both sides automatically; do not assume that it does. HP Ireland specifications and Brother product page

Can either printer scan double-sided documents?

Both models are specified for automatic duplex printing, which means they can print on both sides of a sheet. That capability does not confirm automatic two-sided scanning. The distinction matters if you regularly digitize or copy two-sided forms, contracts, or handouts: a printer can print duplex while its ADF scans only one side at a time.

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8125: HP’s Ireland specifications explicitly describe the ADF as one-sided for scanning. For a two-sided original, plan on turning the pages or using another workflow rather than expecting the feeder to capture both sides in one pass. HP Ireland specifications
  • Brother MFC-J1012DW: The cited product and supply pages do not settle its duplex-scanning capability. If one-pass two-sided scanning is essential, verify the exact feature in the manual or local product documentation before purchasing. Brother product page

For occasional scanning of single-sided pages, the ADF capacity is the more useful comparison. For repeated duplex scanning, confirm the exact scan mechanism rather than inferring it from the duplex-print specification.

Which printer is faster?

HP lists the OfficeJet Pro 8125 at up to 20 ppm black and 10 ppm color in ISO mode. Its support specifications separately list up to 29 ppm black and 25 ppm color in general-office mode. Brother advertises up to 17 ppm black and 9 ppm color for the MFC-J1012DW. These are maximum manufacturer figures, and the Brother page does not identify a matching mode for a direct comparison with HP’s ISO rates. Actual time depends on the document and print settings, so the headline figures should not be read as a promise for every job.

For ordinary home-office decisions, the larger stated difference is often how much paper a printer can hold or how many originals fit in its ADF, rather than a small gap between advertised maximum rates. If speed is critical, look for independent tests using the same document, settings, and measurement method; the specifications cited here do not provide that kind of comparison.

Which printer has cheaper ink?

The available yield figures do not prove that either printer has lower running costs. Cartridge price, the proportion of black-only and color pages, actual coverage, cleaning cycles, and local supply availability all affect what a user pays. The published yields are useful for identifying cartridge options, but they are not enough to declare a cost winner.

Printer and cartridge Published approximate yield Qualification
HP OfficeJet Pro 8125, HP 923 black About 500 pages HP US support specification; approximate replacement yield. HP US specifications
HP OfficeJet Pro 8125, HP 923 cyan, magenta, and yellow About 400 pages for each color cartridge HP US support specification; approximate replacement yield. Cartridge families may vary by market. HP US specifications
Brother MFC-J1012DW, LC401 standard About 200 pages per black or color cartridge Brother approximate yield under ISO/IEC 24711; actual output varies. Brother supply specifications
Brother MFC-J1012DW, LC401XL About 500 pages per black or color cartridge Brother approximate yield under ISO/IEC 24711; actual output varies. Brother supply specifications

How to estimate your own ink cost

  1. Check the price of each compatible cartridge in your country, including the color cartridges you expect to replace. Make sure you are comparing the exact cartridge family and size, not a different regional number or an XL cartridge against a standard cartridge.
  2. Estimate a typical month’s pages and divide them into black-only and color pages. A household printing mostly text has a different ink pattern from one printing colored worksheets, graphics, or photos.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s approximate yield as a starting point, not a guarantee. Divide a cartridge’s price by its stated yield to get a rough per-page figure for that cartridge, then account separately for the colors you actually use.
  4. Add the cost of any paper and account for the fact that maintenance or cleaning can consume ink. The sources cited here do not quantify those effects for a particular owner, so a calculated estimate will not equal a guaranteed bill.
  5. Compare the resulting monthly estimate with the printer’s purchase price and supply availability. A lower cartridge price or higher stated yield alone does not settle total ownership cost.

HP’s US documentation identifies HP 923 supplies, while HP’s regional specifications show why buyers should check the local model information rather than assume a cartridge number travels across markets. Confirm compatibility on the page for your country or on the printer packaging before ordering. HP US specifications and HP Ireland specifications

Is the Brother MFC-J1012DW discontinued?

Brother Canada’s product page lists the MFC-J1012DW as discontinued and showed it out of stock when indexed. If you find a unit, check the warranty, return terms, and whether the LC401 or LC401XL cartridges are readily obtainable where you live. The printer’s listed status makes those practical questions especially relevant: a low purchase price is less useful if the supplies or support you need are difficult to obtain. The cited product page does not establish the current status of stock or support in other regions.

Wireless printing and device compatibility

The HP specifications list dual-band Wi-Fi, the HP app, AirPrint, Wi-Fi Direct, Mopria, and Chrome OS support. Brother describes wireless connectivity, Wi-Fi Direct, USB, Brother Mobile Connect, and cloud workflows. These are manufacturer-listed options; they do not establish that one app is easier to use or more reliable than the other.

Before choosing, match the connection method to the devices and network you actually use. If you intend to print from a phone, confirm that the relevant mobile workflow is supported in your region and that your home network meets the printer’s setup requirements. If you prefer a wired connection, Brother’s cited page lists USB; confirm the precise connection and included cable details for the unit and market you are buying. The sources do not provide a controlled comparison of app experience or connection stability.

Monthly workload and photo printing

HP’s Ireland specification page gives a recommended monthly page volume of up to 800 pages. Brother describes the MFC-J1012DW as ideal for 50–100 pages per month. These figures come from different manufacturer descriptions and are not independently validated or directly equivalent measures. Treat them as context for the intended workload, not a target or a guarantee of long-term performance. HP Ireland specifications and Brother product page

If photo output is important, these specifications do not establish which printer makes better-looking prints. Compare sample output from the exact models, or consult independent tests that use comparable image files and paper. Brother recommends its Innobella glossy photo paper for photos; that is a manufacturer media recommendation, not an independent quality ranking. Brother supply specifications

Which printer should you choose?

Choose the HP OfficeJet Pro 8125 if

  • You want the larger stated paper tray and ADF for fewer interruptions during print, copy, or scan batches.
  • You value HP’s published maximum speed figures, while recognizing that the stated modes do not produce a controlled comparison with Brother’s rate.
  • The model and its compatible HP 923 supplies are available at a price that makes sense in your market.
  • Your usual scanning is single-sided, or you are comfortable handling two-sided originals separately.

Consider the Brother MFC-J1012DW if

  • A 150-sheet tray and 20-page ADF are sufficient for your workload.
  • You can confirm local stock, warranty, support, and a dependable source for LC401 or LC401XL cartridges.
  • The local purchase price and cartridge prices suit the number and type of pages you print.
  • You have confirmed its scanning features meet your needs, particularly if automatic duplex scanning is a requirement.

Pause before buying either model if

  • Your decision depends mainly on cost per page: collect current local cartridge prices and estimate your own black-and-color mix first.
  • You need high-volume two-sided scanning: verify the ADF’s scan capability in the exact regional documentation rather than relying on automatic duplex printing.
  • Photo quality is a deciding factor: seek comparable sample prints or independent testing, because the cited specifications do not rank output quality.

On the documented features, HP is the more convenient choice for users who benefit from extra tray and ADF capacity. The Brother remains a possible fit for a smaller workload if the model and its supplies are accessible locally. The evidence here does not justify naming either one the cheaper printer to own or the better printer for print quality.
