Are you trying to pick an HP laptop to buy? This HP ENVY vs Pavilion comparison will come in handy during the process of making your decision.

HP ENVY vs Pavilion: At First Glance

For many years now, HP has been consistently making some of the best laptops on the market. The quality they’ve offered has made them achieve a lot of success with their products – including the HP ENVY 15.

After all, it is an attractive laptop with a lot of performance capable of satisfying business professionals’ needs. In fact, the HP ENVY laptop has been able to measure up with top-notch laptops like the MacBook Pro 16-inch in terms of performance and appearance.

However, the HP ENVY 15 does this at a costly price of $1,999.11 (price correct as of January 2022). Considering that inexpensive, but surprisingly powerful laptops have now become the bread and butter of the 15.6-inch laptop range, the HP Pavilion G6 might just be a credible alternative to the expensive HP ENVY 15.

While many covet the stylish Envy laptops, the majority of consumers still tend to go for laptops below the $700 range. At an inexpensive price of $170.00, the HP Pavilion G6 aims to appeal to the budget market with a decent range of hardware specifications.

However, will its decent range of hardware specifications be enough to topple the HP ENVY 15 from its position of supremacy? Let’s find out.

HP ENVY vs Pavilion: Design, Dimension and Weight

Though both laptops are 15.6-inch in size, their general design is completely different. The HP ENVY 15 is in a league of its own in terms of design.

While you can regard the HP ENVY 15’s design as a conservative one, it is an attractively styled laptop when you compare it to the HP Pavilion G6’s design. You can notice the staggering difference in both laptops’ levels just by looking at their physical appearance.

The HP ENVY 15 is so beautiful that it looks fitting for the more expensive HP Spectre x360 15’s category. With the attractive silver color adorning its all-aluminum chassis, you could easily mistake the HP ENVY 15 for other premium professional laptops when its lid is closed.

However, if you look closely, there’s enough underlying detail to distinguish the HP ENVY 15’s almost unique design. First is the stylized HP logo on its lid.

This version of the HP logo is one that HP majorly sets apart for the laptops it seems to cherish more. Rather than the regular old circle branding, this series of the HP logo is written with angled lines.

Apart from the graphical use of angled lines, HP also made use of angled lines in the construction of the HP ENVY 15’s chassis. The angular line construction on the HP ENVY 15 makes it brim with vigor and robustness.

If you hold the HP ENVY 15, you will be able to feel its solid build. There’s no form of bending or flexing anywhere around the laptop’s chassis.

Despite its angular line construction and rugged chassis structure, the HP ENVY 15 still maintains a sharp, clean look. Apparently, its body parts have been chiseled well enough to give it a sleek look.

While its design isn’t as attractive as the HP ENVY 15’s design, the HP Pavilion G6’s design isn’t as dreadful looking as some make it out to be. Its simple plastic chassis has a friendly design that hopes to appeal to people with varying preferences.

Unlike the HP ENVY 15 which comes with a simple silver color scheme, the HP Pavilion G6 features a light gray plus dark gray color scheme. You could also buy the HP Pavilion G6 in pacific blue, luminous rose, sweet purple, and pewter.

That being said, our reference unit for this comparison review has dark gray color spreading over its lid with glossy paint. Surprisingly, the glossy paint on the HP Pavilion G6’s lid manages to resist fingerprints.

If there’s anything about the HP Pavilion G6’s design that’s remotely similar to HP ENVY 15, it would be its neat design. Just like the HP ENVY 15, the HP Pavilion G6 has smooth and well-rounded corners that give it a clean look.

The HP Pavilion G6’s build quality is also quite encouraging. Its chassis feels durable and you will barely notice any obvious flex when you handle the laptop.

Don’t get it twisted though. The HP Pavilion G6 doesn’t feel as solid as the HP ENVY 15, but its lid feels sturdy enough for a laptop of its price range.

However, there is an unusual downside about this lid that you won’t notice until you try opening the laptop. Due to how rigid the HP Pavilion G6’s lid and the hinge are, opening or closing the laptop causes a little shift in its internal body parts.

This often results in a creaking sound whenever you open or close the laptop.

When you open the HP Pavilion G6, you get invited into another world of its lighter gray color scheme. However, the light gray color still didn’t come without the company of the darker one.

On the inside of the HP Pavilion G6, its screen and deck have a dark gray color framing. While I don’t have issues with the keyboard deck framing, I can barely stand the sight of the screen’s frame.

Perhaps if we were reviewing the HP Pavilion G6 alone, its chunky display bezels could have been overlooked given how old the laptop is. However, in comparison with the HP ENVY 15 with much thinner bezels, the HP Pavilion G6’s bezels are quite displeasing.

At least the HP ENVY 15’s top and side bezels are slim enough to meet the standards of the modern-day bezel. Unfortunately, its bottom bezel is a bit too thick to conform to modern standards.

The only reasonable explanation for the bottom bezel’s chunkier size is the HP logo it accommodates. Honestly, I don’t see the need for this since the logo is already on the lid.

Without the logo, HP could have made the ENVY 15’s bottom bezel as slim as the top and side ones.

Unlike the dark gray colored bezels on the HP Pavilion G6, the HP ENVY 15’s bezels are black. It is the only different color scheme that HP introduced to the interior design of the ENVY 15.

The HP ENVY 15’s keyboard deck doesn’t feature any other color apart from the silver color on its exterior. It maintains the same simple silver design without adding any extra touch of style.

Before I fully focus on the HP ENVY 15 and Pavilion G6’s keyboard decks, let’s consider how good their displays are.

Though the two laptops feature 15.6-inch sized displays, the quality their display offers are very different.

To start with, the HP ENVY 15 has a Full HD screen resolution of 1920 x 1080. Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 offers a lower-end HD screen resolution of 1366×768.

Another basic difference between the two laptops’ screens is that the HP ENVY 15 is a touchscreen while the HP Pavilion G6’s isn’t. In addition, the HP Pavilion G6 offers a maximum screen brightness of just 200 nits.

The HP ENVY 15, on the other hand, offers a better screen brightness of 404 nits.

From these display specs, one can already guess how much better the HP ENVY 15’s screen would be compared to that of the Pavilion G6.

The HP ENVY 15’s IPS panel display produces images and videos excellently with rich color saturation. Its colorful display also delivers a solid contrast.

To be precise, the HP ENVY 15’s display offers an incredible contrast of 404,410:1. For those wondering what contrast ratio means, it is the ratio of the bright colors a display can produce to the blacks it can produce.

It is an important criteria for determining the quality of images and videos a display can produce.

In comparison, the HP Pavilion G6’s contrast is so bad that its black level performance is very poor.

The black-colored images it produces often have a washed-out appearance. As a result, watching movies with dark scenes on this laptop is not enjoyable at all.

Another issue with the HP Pavilion G6’s display is the problem known as the “screen door effect”. This problem is very common with 15.6-inch laptops and the HP Pavilion G6 isn’t free of the issue.

For those not familiar with what the “screen door effect” is, it is a problem that makes images with light color appear as if they’re being viewed through a screen door. Even though it is not as obvious on this laptop as it is on many other 15.6-inch laptops, it is still noticeable.

Overall, the HP Pavilion G6’s display is bang average compared to the HP ENVY 15’s.

Now let’s compare the keyboards of HP ENVY 15 vs that of HP Pavilion G6.

Below both laptops’ screens, there are also two very different keyboards. Firstly, the HP ENVY 15 has a lovely array of backlit Chiclet-styled keys.

These keys are moderately sized and they have a good amount of spacing between them. However, these keys could have been a bit bigger if only HP didn’t think to fit the laptop’s Bang & Olufsen tuned speakers on either side of the keyboard.

Nonetheless, the layout of the HP ENVY 15’s keys is fair. The keys have plenty of travel and they offer just the right amount of snappy feedback without feeling too light or stiff.

In case you are wondering what key travel means, it is the distance between a key’s resting and fully pressed positions.

Overall, the HP ENVY 15’s keyboard feels awesome. However, its keyboard features some odd key arrangements.

The HP ENVY 15’s home, page up, page down and end keys are positioned on the right, under the delete key. As a result of this, this laptop’s power button is a key on the top-right of the keyboard rather than being a button.

I’m not so pleased with this placement since there is a high possibility for people to occasionally hit the power key accidentally. While this is the only issue I have with the ENVY 15’s keyboard, I have issues with the entire keyboard of the Pavilion G6.

At first, the layout of the HP Pavilion G6’s keyboard will discourage you. However, contrary to the way it looks, this laptop’s keyboard gets the job done.

Though its flat keys do not have adequate spacing between them, they don’t feel too cramped during typing sessions because they are full in size. Overall, the light gray colored keyboard offers a comfortable typing experience and the keys have good tactile feedback.

However, the typing experience the HP Pavilion G6’s keyboard offers is not as enjoyable as the one you get with the HP ENVY 15. Similarly, there is a clear difference in the quality of both laptops’ touchpads.

While the HP ENVY 15 features a 4.5 x 2.7-inch glass touchpad, the HP Pavilion G6 comes with a 3.5 x 2 inches textured touchpad. In use, the HP ENVY 15’s touchpad is more sensitive compared to the HP Pavilion G6’s.

For example, compared to the HP Pavilion G6’s touchpad, the HP ENVY 15’s touchpad is also more sensitive to Windows 10 multi-touch gestures. Two-finger scrolling, swiping, and pinch-to-zoom gestures are more comfortable to perform on the HP ENVY 15’s touchpad.

The other notable feature on the HP ENVY 15’s deck is the two top-facing speakers on either side of the keyboard area. These speakers perform quite well for a laptop’s speaker.

It produces better sounds compared to the Altec Lansing stereo speakers positioned on the front edge of the HP Pavilion G6. This is not to say that the HP Pavilion’s speaker is completely poor.

At least it performs better than the speakers in most laptops below the $500 range.

In terms of ports, both laptops come offering many options. The HP ENVY 15 offers 1 USB 3.1 Type-C port, 3 USB 3.1 ports, and 1 HDMI port.

Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 comes with 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, and 1 HDMI 1.4 port.

Finally, in terms of their overall dimension and size, the HP ENVY 15 is big, yet lighter than the HP Pavilion G6. To be precise, the HP ENVY 15 measures 380 x 255 x 17.9 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 1940 g.

Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 measures 374 x 245 x 3.1 – 3.6 mm and weighs 2500 g.

Overall, the HP ENVY 15 emerges victorious in this round. This is because it has a sleeker and more modern design.

In addition to its sleeker design, HP ENVY 15 is lighter than HP Pavilion G6. Not only that, the HP ENVY 15 offers a USB Type-C port, faster USB and HDMI ports.

As a result, HP ENVY 15 scores a nine in this HP ENVY vs Pavilion design comparison review. Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 scores a seven.

HP ENVY vs Pavilion: Processor (CPU) Performance

Even though HP equips both the HP ENVY 15 and Pavilion G6 with seventh-generation processors, their configuration still differs.

The HP ENVY 15 features a dual-core Intel Core i7-7500U processor. Meanwhile, the Pavilion G6 comes with a quad-core Intel Core i7-3632QM.

In terms of processor speed, both laptops’ basic processor specs show that the HP ENVY 15’s processor can operate at a faster speed. To be precise, the HP ENVY 15’s Core i7-7500U processor has a base frequency of 2.7 GHz and a maximum frequency of 3.5 GHz.

The HP Pavilion G6’s Core i7-3632QM processor, on the other hand, has a base frequency of 2.20 GHz and a boost frequency of 3.20 GHz.

During regular processor-intensive tasks, both laptops’ processors can offer a decent level of performance. They can both handle all the regular computing tasks like web surfing, document creation & editing, emailing, and videoconferencing.

However, the HP ENVY 15 can handle more intensive computing operations compared to the HP Pavilion G6.

Both laptops’ Cinebench R15 benchmark test results also indicate their performance difference. For more details, the Cinebench R15 is a synthetic benchmark that tests for a laptop’s efficiency at handling processor-intensive tasks.

This test is often recorded in two aspects.

The first aspect tests for when only one of the laptop’s processor cores is put to use. This aspect is known as the single-core test.

Meanwhile the other aspect tests for when more than one of the processor’s cores are put to use. This aspect is referred to as the multi-core aspect.

Overall, the higher the laptop scores on both aspects, the better its performance capability.

On this test, the HP ENVY 15 was able to obtain 197 points in the single-core aspect and it scored 1293 in the multi-core aspect. It outscored the HP Pavilion G6 in both aspects.

To give more detail, the HP Pavilion G6 scored 113 points in the single-core aspect and it scored 523 points in the multi-core aspect.

With these results, the HP ENVY 15 clearly outperformed the HP Pavilion G6. As a result, HP ENVY scores an eight in this HP ENVY vs Pavilion processor comparison review.

The HP Pavilion G6, on the other hand, scores a six.

HP ENVY vs Pavilion: Memory (RAM) Performance

The memory configurations on the HP ENVY 15 and Pavilion G6 are entirely different.

HP equips the ENVY 15 with an 8 GB SDRAM. Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 comes with 2 GB DDR3 RAM.

Fortunately, HP allocated 2 slots for both laptops’ RAM configuration. As a result, it is possible for you to upgrade the HP ENVY 15 and Pavilion G6’s RAM configuration with one of their RAM slots.

However, there is a limit to the upgrade you can perform on both laptops. On the HP ENVY 15, HP allows a maximum RAM configuration of 16 GB.

Meanwhile, you can only upgrade the HP Pavilion G6’s RAM to a maximum size of 8 GB.

For this review, our HP ENVY 15 reference unit comes with a 16 GB RAM configuration, while our HP pavilion G6 reference unit features a 6 GB RAM.

Generally, both laptops can run memory-intensive tasks considerably well. With about 16 Chrome tabs running – two playing 1080 p YouTube videos – the HP Pavilion G6 should be able to operate smoothly without stuttering.

The HP ENVY 15, on the other hand, should be able to run smoothly with 23 Chrome tabs while a music album played on Spotify. Evidently, the HP ENVY 15 can offer better memory-specific performance compared to the HP Pavilion G6.

However, I cannot stop here. To help further evaluate and compare the performance of both laptops, I’ll share PCMark 8 benchmark test.

For those that are not familiar with the PCMark 8, it is a benchmark that tests for the memory performance capability a laptop can offer. It performs this test by simulating office-centric tasks such as word processing, web surfing, and video conferencing.

While I was able to obtain the HP ENVY 15’s PCMark 8 test result, I was unable to obtain the HP Pavilion G6’s result. Unfortunately, the laptop could not run this version of the PCMark test.

It could only run the PCMark 7 version.

It is important to mention that both versions test for a laptop’s memory performance efficiency. However, the PCMark 8 is a more current version compared to the PCMark 7.

Basically, the PCMark 8 is more intensive compared to the PCMark 7. Though comparing what the HP ENVY scored on the PCMark 8 with what the Pavilion G6 scored on the PCMark 7 may not be ideal, I will provide the records anyway.

Surprisingly, the HP ENVY 15’s score on the more intensive PCMark 8 test was still higher than what the HP Pavilion G6 scored on the PCMark 7. While the HP ENVY 15 scored 4448 points on the PCMark 8 test, the HP Pavilion G6 scored 1723 points on the PCMark 7 test.

These results leave no doubt that the HP ENVY 15 is far superior to the HP Pavilion G6 in terms of memory performance. Therefore, the HP ENVY 15 scores an eight in this HP ENVY vs Pavilion memory performance comparison.

Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 scored six.

HP ENVY vs Pavilion: Storage Options and Performance

Both laptops are also completely different in terms of their storage configuration.

The HP ENVY 15 usually comes with a 256 GB PCIe NVMe SSD storage drive. Meanwhile, HP equips the Pavilion G6 with a 1 TB 5400 RPM SATA HDD storage drive.

This storage configuration means that the HP Pavilion G6 offers more storage capacity compared to the HP ENVY 15. However, while it offers more storage capacity, the HP ENVY 15’s storage configuration will still offer better performance.

The main reason for this is that the HP ENVY 15’s features an SSD storage type. Unlike the HDD on the HP Pavilion G6, the SSD drive is a much faster storage drive.

As a result, you can expect the HP ENVY 15 to offer better performance speeds compared to the HP Pavilion G6.

As you’d have it, the performance test results I’ve gathered proves this theory. Firstly, the HP ENVY 15 was able to perform faster on the real-world storage performance test.

To give more detail, the HP ENVY 15 was able to copy 4.97GB files in 8 seconds at a rate of 650.6 MBps. Meanwhile, it took the HP Pavilion G6 3 minutes and 47 seconds to copy the same file at a rate of 22.4 MBps.

On the CrystalDiskMark benchmark test, the HP ENVY 15 also displayed better performance results. To be clear, the CrystalDiskMark benchmark tests for the average read and write speeds of a laptop’s storage drive.

The HP ENVY 15 was able to record a sequential read speed of 1270 MBps and a sequential write speed of 537.2 MBps. Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 recorded a sequential read speed of 84.71 MBps and a sequential write speed of 88.20 MBps.

Overall, the HP ENVY 15 takes this round too despite the larger storage capacity the HP Pavilion offers. If you consider the results of the storage performance tests, you will discover that it is more beneficial to go with HP ENVY’s storage.

Despite its smaller storage capacity, the HP ENVY can offer a much faster storage performance compared to the HP Pavilion’s sluggish storage performance.

Besides, if you are so worried about storage capacity, HP offers a means of storage expansion on the HP ENVY 15. You can expand your storage with the multi-format SD media card reader that comes along with the HP ENVY 15.

HP also equips the HP Pavilion G6 with a multi-format digital media reader for storage expansion. Nonetheless, the HP ENVY 15 still wins this round.

Therefore, HP ENVY 15 scores a nine in this HP ENVY vs Pavilion storage comparison review. On the other hand, the HP Pavilion G6 scores a seven.

HP ENVY vs Pavilion: Graphics Card Performance

Again, both laptops feature completely different graphics configurations. In terms of graphics cards, you get only one configuration option for the HP ENVY 15.

Meanwhile, HP offers potential customers the privilege to choose between two graphics configuration options for the HP Pavilion G6.

HP only ships the HP ENVY 15 with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 graphics card. This graphics card doesn’t come with a dedicated VRAM.

Furthermore, it offers a base frequency of 300 MHz and a boost frequency of 1050 MHz.

With the HP Pavilion G6, you can either get the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU or the dedicated AMD Radeon HD 7670M GPU.

The Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU offers a base frequency of 650 MHz and a boost frequency of 1150 MHz. Meanwhile, the AMD Radeon HD 7670M GPU offers a base frequency of 600 MHz.

Unfortunately, HP didn’t provide the boost frequency this GPU will be able to offer. However, they did let us know that if you buy the HP Pavilion G6 laptop with the AMD Radeon HD 7670M, you will also get a 2 GB DDR3 dedicated VRAM.

With the dedicated VRAM, you can expect an improved graphics performance on the laptop. This is because the VRAM’s primary function is to help aid the GPU’s performance.

Hence, laptops with dedicated graphics VRAM can offer an improved level of graphics performance.

As expected, our HP Pavilion G6 review unit that features the AMD Radeon HD 7670M GPU offers a fair gaming performance. It can run a few old title games in medium to high graphics settings at native screen resolution.

However, it can’t play more intensive modern AAA title games.

The HP ENVY 15 is no gaming laptop either, but it is fully capable of playing modern AAA title games at 1080 p. As an example, it should be able to play The Witcher at 119 frames per second.

Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 cannot play this game at all.

If you need another example, the HP ENVY 15 should play Dirt Showdown at a frame rate of 120 frames per second. Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 can only offer a frame rate of 53.6 frames per second.

Not only did the HP ENVY 15 beat HP Pavilion G6 in the gaming examples, but it also extends its overwhelming performance to the benchmark test aspect. For the benchmark test, I consulted the 3DMark 11 benchmark.

To be clear, this 3DMark 11 benchmark accesses how well a laptop can handle graphically intensive tasks. Basically, the higher a laptop’s score on this test, the better graphics performance it can offer.

On this test, the HP ENVY 15 scored a mind-blowing 18109 points, widely surpassing the HP Pavilion G6’s 1233 points. Once again, this rounds up another show of dominance from the HP ENVY 15.

Since it outperformed the HP Pavilion G6 in both the real-world gaming tests and the benchmark test, the HP ENVY 15 wins this round. Hence, the HP ENVY 15 scores a nine in this HP ENVY vs Pavilion graphics performance comparison.

Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 scores a seven.

HP ENVY vs Pavilion: Battery Life and Performance

The HP ENVY 15 and Pavilion G6 do not come with the same battery configuration. While HP offers one configuration for the ENVY 15’s battery, they provide two battery configuration options for the Pavilion G6.

You can only buy the HP ENVY 15 with a 3-cell, 52 Wh Li-ion battery. Meanwhile, you can buy the HP Pavilion G6 with either a 6-cell, 47 Wh battery or a 6-cell, 55 Wh battery.

For the record, our HP Pavilion review unit features the 6-cell, 47 Wh battery.

With this battery configuration, the HP Pavilion G6 was able to last for 3 hours 48 minutes on the continuous web surfing test. Meanwhile, the HP ENVY 15 didn’t run out of battery until after 6 hours and 1 minute.

To be clear, the web surfing test is a battery life test that checks how long a laptop can last under continuous web surfing.

I also checked how long both laptops can last when they are subjected to run under a maximum intensive workload. On this test, the HP ENVY 15 was able to last for 1 hour and 37 minutes.

The HP Pavilion G6, on the other hand, ran out of power after 1 hour and 21 minutes.

Based on these test results, we can say that the HP ENVY 15 offers a longer battery runtime compared to the HP Pavilion G6. Hence, the HP ENVY 15 takes this round too with a score of eight.

Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion G6 scores a six in this HP ENVY vs Pavilion battery performance comparison.
