Token unlocks and emissions can put downward pressure on a cryptocurrency’s price by increasing the supply available to holders, but neither guarantees a sell-off. The effect depends on how much supply reaches the market relative to the circulating float, who receives it, whether recipients sell, and whether demand and liquidity absorb it. Burns can offset some new issuance, and markets may price in a known release before it happens.
What token unlocks and emissions mean
Binance Research defines tokenomics as “the study of determining and evaluating the economic characteristics of a cryptographic token” (Shivam Sharma and Stefan Piech, Tokenomics – Deep Dive, 24 August 2022). Supply allocation, vesting, emissions, burns, and demand are all relevant to that analysis.
Token unlocks release restricted tokens
A token unlock is a scheduled release of tokens that were previously restricted, typically under a vesting arrangement. The tokens may become transferable or eligible for sale, but an unlock is not evidence that recipients have sold—or intend to sell—them. Releases may occur as a large cliff or in smaller installments over time.
Emissions add newly issued tokens
Emissions are newly issued tokens, often distributed as staking rewards or ecosystem incentives. Unlike a discrete unlock, emissions can increase supply continuously. A quoted staking reward in tokens does not by itself show that holders earn a positive return in purchasing power: that depends on token price changes and other factors.

Why added supply can affect price
When more tokens become available, existing holders’ share of the total supply may be diluted, and recipients have additional tokens they could sell. If selling exceeds available demand, price can face pressure. But supply alone does not determine the market move: recipients may hold or stake tokens, buyers may absorb them, and a release that is already expected may be reflected in the price beforehand.
Scale matters as much as the headline dollar value. A release that looks large in dollars may be small relative to the liquid circulating supply; a smaller release can matter more if trading depth is thin or demand is weak. Burns may also offset part of gross issuance, so the relevant picture includes net supply change as well as new releases.

How to assess a specific unlock or emission schedule
- Check the schedule and verify it. DeFiLlama’s Token Unlocks & Vesting Schedules dashboard distinguishes cliff and linear releases and tracks protocols. Its dollar amounts and totals are live snapshots, so check them again when making a decision and, where possible, confirm dates and allocations against the project’s documentation.
- Compare the release with circulating float. Look at the number of tokens being released as a share of the circulating float, not only their estimated dollar value. A percentage of float provides more context about the potential supply change.
- Identify the release pattern and recipient category. A cliff can concentrate availability on one date; linear or frequent releases spread it over time. Note who receives the tokens and their stated use, but do not assume that a particular recipient will sell.
- Account for issuance and burns. Consider ongoing emissions alongside scheduled unlocks, then compare gross additions with tokens removed through burns. A gross release does not equal the net change in supply.
- Consider market conditions. Assess liquidity and market depth, demand for the token, broader market conditions, and whether traders already expect the event. These factors affect how much new supply the market can absorb.
- Keep circulating supply and fully diluted valuation distinct. Fully diluted valuation (FDV) is a valuation based on a larger potential token supply; it is not a forecast that the token will realize that value. Read it alongside current circulating supply rather than treating it as a price prediction.
What studies say about price effects
The available findings do not support a fixed rule that every unlock lowers price by a particular percentage. Results vary by asset, sample, and statistical method, and observed associations should not be read as proof of cause and effect.
An ETH study reports different signs across methods
A 2026 Frontiers in Blockchain study analyzed bi-weekly ETH observations from 15 August 2021 through 30 September 2025. Its Spearman correlation table reported a positive association between ETH price and unlocks (ρ = 0.697, p < 0.001; N = 104). Its regression summary instead reported a negative unlock coefficient (β = −0.22, p < 0.001), while its short-run error-correction model reported a positive coefficient for changes in unlocks (β = 0.054, p = 0.042). These figures come from different specifications and are not interchangeable estimates; β = −0.22 is not a 22% price decline.

The study is observational and reports substantial relationships among predictors, including TVL and unlocks. It also reports positive relationships for TVL and, in its regression, fees and burns. The results describe associations in this ETH sample, not a causal forecast for ETH or other tokens. Source: Frontiers in Blockchain (2026).
A Tokenomist sample reports a relative move
Chawapat Peechapat’s 29 June 2026 Tokenomist article reports a one-month median relative move of −4.85% versus matched peers for 221 events, from a broader sample of 236 unlock events dated 16 June 2024 through 31 March 2026; price data ran through 16 June 2026. The article says returns are measured relative to Bitcoin, but its body is subscriber-only in the accessible version, limiting independent review of the methods and subgroup interpretation. How to interpret an unlock tracker
A tracker is useful for finding potential supply events and comparing their schedules; it cannot tell you whether recipients will sell or predict a price move. Treat its figures as time-sensitive, verify the underlying schedule with project documentation where possible, and assess the release alongside emissions, burns, float, demand, and liquidity. A date on a calendar is one input to analysis, not a trading signal on its own.
