In the United States, the only reliably free way to watch Olympic events live on television is a local NBC station received over the air with an antenna. That does not mean every event is free: NBC selects part of the schedule for broadcast, while complete event coverage has been placed on Peacock.

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina ran from February 6 through February 22, 2026, with NBCUniversal coverage ending after the Closing Ceremony on February 23. There is no Olympic competition airing live in the United States on August 9, 2026. The next Games are the Los Angeles Summer Olympics, scheduled for July 14–30, 2028.

What “free channels” actually means

There are three different things people often lump together as free Olympic viewing:

Option Is it free? What it provides
Local NBC over the air Yes, after buying or already owning an antenna Selected NBC Olympic broadcasts available in your local area
NBC website or app Usually no Live local NBC streams generally require an eligible TV-provider login
Peacock Generally no For the 2026 Games, the complete live event schedule, replays and digital features
USA Network or CNBC Usually no Additional Olympic programming through a cable, satellite or live-TV package

A free NBC account, an internet connection, or a Peacock login does not automatically unlock the full Olympic schedule.

Watch free with an antenna

Antenna television is the straightforward free option. Your local NBC affiliate transmits a digital broadcast signal that a compatible TV can receive without a cable, satellite or streaming subscription. You pay for the antenna only once; there is no monthly channel fee.

Set it up

  1. Connect the antenna to the television’s ANT IN, RF IN or CABLE/ANTENNA port.
  2. Open the TV’s settings. The menu is commonly called Settings > Channels, Broadcasting or Channel Setup.
  3. Choose Antenna or Air rather than Cable.
  4. Run Auto Program, Auto Tuning or Channel Scan.
  5. Find the local NBC affiliate in the results and test it before the event begins.

Reception depends on your address, terrain, building materials, antenna placement and the location of the transmitter. An indoor antenna may work well near a city but fail in a valley, behind foil-backed insulation or several miles from the broadcast tower. Moving it near a window or using an outdoor antenna can help.

NBC’s digital support can explain the distinction between its service and an antenna signal, but it does not troubleshoot your antenna installation. If the NBC station is missing, check the antenna manufacturer’s instructions, rescan the TV, and use a local reception or transmitter map to choose a better antenna position.

What you can and cannot watch on NBC

NBC’s broadcast network does not normally carry every sport and every event. During Milan Cortina 2026, NBC showed selected live daytime events, primetime coverage, and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. It also carried at least five hours of daytime programming each day.

That makes an antenna useful for major events and scheduled NBC programming, but it is not a free replacement for the complete event stream. If two competitions happen at the same time, the event you want may be assigned to Peacock, USA Network, CNBC or another NBCUniversal outlet instead.

Before relying on an antenna, check the official Olympic schedule for:

  • the event date and start time;
  • whether the listing says NBC broadcast or another network/service;
  • your local station’s schedule, especially for events affected by time-zone differences;
  • whether the program is live or a later primetime presentation.

Why the NBC app is not a free workaround

The NBC website and NBC apps may be free to download or visit, but the Watch Live stream is normally protected by TV-provider authentication. The usual process is:

  2. Select Watch Live.
  3. Choose the local NBC station, if it is available.
  4. Select Sign In or Link TV Provider.
  5. Enter the credentials for an eligible cable, satellite or live-TV provider.

An internet-only plan is not the same as a TV-provider subscription. For example, paying an internet company for broadband access does not by itself authorize the locked NBC live stream. A Peacock subscription also does not function as the TV-provider login for NBC network apps.

NBC’s online stream is location-based. It generally shows the NBC station associated with your physical location, not an NBC affiliate from another city that you select manually. Availability can also vary when the local station or provider does not have the required streaming agreement.

Is Peacock free for Olympic coverage?

Do not assume that a free Peacock account includes live Olympics. For Milan Cortina 2026, Peacock was the service that carried every sport and all 116 medal events live, along with replays, Gold Zone and other digital features. It was generally a paid streaming service, not a free channel.

A promotion could change the price temporarily for a particular Games, but that must be verified for the relevant event and date. A claim that “Peacock is free for the Olympics” is incomplete unless it identifies a current, official promotion and its restrictions.

Are USA Network and CNBC free channels?

Usually not. USA Network and CNBC carried additional Olympic programming in 2026, but they are pay-TV cable networks rather than ordinary free over-the-air channels. Access generally requires a cable, satellite or live-TV streaming package that includes those networks.

Some services offer introductory trials, but a trial is not the same as a permanently free channel. It may require payment details, automatically renew, exclude certain channels, or end before the event you want to watch. Check the provider’s channel lineup and cancellation terms before signing up.

How to avoid misleading Olympic streaming listings

  1. Check the date first. A page written for the 2026 Games may be outdated once those Games have ended.
  2. Identify the country. Rights differ by territory. A free option advertised in the United Kingdom, Canada or Australia may not be available in the United States.
  3. Separate network from service. “NBC coverage” can mean an over-the-air broadcast, a pay-TV stream, or a Peacock stream.
  4. Look for authentication wording. “Sign in with your TV provider” means the stream is not freely available to everyone.
  5. Confirm the event, not just the Games. A service may show the Opening Ceremony or highlights while requiring payment for live competition.
  6. Use official schedules. Search NBC’s Olympic coverage pages and the local NBC station’s listings rather than relying on an old blog post or search snippet.

What to expect for Los Angeles 2028

NBCUniversal holds U.S. Olympic media rights through 2036, so NBCUniversal is expected to remain the key U.S. rights holder for Los Angeles 2028. However, the detailed 2028 channel schedule and any free-streaming or promotional terms should not be treated as finalized until NBCUniversal announces them.

The safest planning assumption is that an antenna may provide selected events on the local NBC station, while the full digital schedule could require a paid service. Recheck the official NBC Olympics information closer to July 14, 2028, rather than carrying 2026 Peacock or broadcast details forward as if they were guaranteed.

FAQ

Can I watch the Olympics free with an antenna?

In the United States, an antenna can receive selected Olympic programming from your local NBC station without a monthly subscription. It does not provide every event.

Can I watch the full Olympics free on NBC.com?

Usually no. NBC’s live stream generally requires an eligible cable, satellite or live-TV provider login. A broadband-only internet plan does not qualify.

Is Peacock free for live Olympic events?

Not generally. During Milan Cortina 2026, Peacock carried the complete live schedule as a paid streaming service. Check for an official promotion for the specific Games rather than assuming a free account is sufficient.

Are USA Network and CNBC free over the air?

Usually no. They are pay-TV cable networks. Access normally requires a television package that includes them.

The Bottom Line

For viewers in the United States, use an antenna to watch the Olympic events that your local NBC station broadcasts for free. Expect only selected coverage, not the complete schedule. NBC’s website and app generally require a TV-provider login, and Peacock has been the paid home for full live Olympic coverage. Confirm the official schedule and pricing for the specific Games before making plans.
