To run PyTorch on a Google Cloud TPU, first choose the software path that matches your TPU generation and resource shape. Google’s current PyTorch-on-Cloud-TPU overview presents TorchTPU as the PyTorch-native backend: install it with pip install torch_tpu, create tensors on torch.device("tpu"), and scale with torch.compile and distributed tooling. Google also maintains a separate PyTorch/XLA workflow for TPU VMs and multi-host slices, using torch_xla[tpu] and PJRT_DEVICE=TPU. These are not interchangeable recipes. Confirm the supported TPU generations and package versions in the live Google Cloud documentation before pinning anything, because the published XLA example is centered on version 2.6 rather than a statement of the latest release.

How do I run PyTorch on a Google Cloud TPU?

The shortest current route is the TorchTPU backend. On a provisioned TPU resource, install the package in the environment that will run your program, select the TPU device explicitly, and perform a small tensor operation before attempting a full training job.

python3 -m pip install torch_tpu
python3 - <<'PY'
import torch

device = torch.device("tpu")
a = torch.ones((2, 2), device=device)
b = torch.full((2, 2), 3, device=device)
print(a + b)
PY

If the operation succeeds, the Python process has created and evaluated a tensor on the TPU backend. The current overview also demonstrates compiling PyTorch programs with torch.compile and using distributed training components. Treat the overview as the entry point, not as a universal compatibility promise: TPU generation, PyTorch release, TorchTPU release and the image supplied to your VM or slice must be a supported combination.

What must I have before installing PyTorch?

  • A Google Cloud project and billing account. TPU VMs and slices are allocated cloud accelerators; quota and regional capacity must be available before a connection can succeed.
  • A TPU resource. You can work on one TPU VM for development or a larger slice for distributed training. Resource-management procedures differ by generation and are maintained through current Compute Engine or GKE workflows.
  • A compatible software image. Verify the TPU generation and operating-system image against the current TorchTPU or PyTorch/XLA documentation. There is no single release matrix covering every generation in the material available for this guide.
  • Network access and identity. Your local account or service account needs permission to connect to the VM and use the project’s TPU resources.

Do not choose package versions solely because an older tutorial uses them. A version that works on one TPU generation can fail to import, fail to enumerate devices or compile the wrong operations on another.

What is the difference between TorchTPU and PyTorch/XLA?

TorchTPU is Google’s current PyTorch-native direction, while PyTorch/XLA is the established framework documented in TPU VM and TPU slice guides. Select one path for a given environment and follow its device API, installation instructions and distributed launcher.

Decision point TorchTPU path PyTorch/XLA path
Device selection torch.device("tpu") XLA devices exposed when PJRT_DEVICE=TPU is set
Typical installation shown by Google pip install torch_tpu torch plus torch_xla[tpu]
Primary documentation focus PyTorch-native execution, compilation and scaling TPU VM and multi-host slice workflows
Version guidance Check the live TorchTPU and TPU-generation support notes The calculation guide’s concrete example uses approximately PyTorch 2.6.0 and torch-xla 2.6.0
Best fit New projects following the current backend direction Existing XLA code, TPU VM examples and SPMD slice orchestration

The two routes should not be mixed casually. For example, installing torch_tpu does not turn a PyTorch/XLA script into a TorchTPU script, and setting PJRT_DEVICE=TPU does not replace the TorchTPU device selection shown in the current overview.

How do I install PyTorch on a Cloud TPU VM with PyTorch/XLA?

A TPU VM gives you a host where you can log in, install packages and run the training process. The following sequence reflects Google’s documented example; its 2.6 pins are an example tied to that guide, not a claim that 2.6 is the newest supported release.

1. Connect to the TPU VM

Set the project, zone and VM name for your resource, then use the TPU VM SSH command.

export PROJECT_ID="your-project-id"
export ZONE="your-tpu-zone"
export TPU_VM_NAME="your-tpu-vm"
gcloud compute tpus tpu-vm ssh "$TPU_VM_NAME"
  --project "$PROJECT_ID"
  --zone "$ZONE"

The command must target the TPU VM service, not a regular Compute Engine instance. If it cannot connect, check the resource name, zone, IAM permissions, project selection and whether the VM is still allocated.

2. Install the guide’s example packages

Inside the VM, the calculation guide specifies approximately torch~=2.6.0 and torch_xla[tpu]~=2.6.0. Google’s instructions also use TPU wheel and libtpu release indexes. Use the index options and release channels shown in the current guide for your TPU generation rather than copying an old index URL.

python3 -m pip install
  'torch~=2.6.0'
  'torch_xla[tpu]~=2.6.0'

If the live instructions specify an additional TPU wheel or libtpu index for your image, add those options exactly as documented. Keep the installation in the same virtual environment that will launch the training script.

3. Verify that XLA can see the accelerator

PJRT_DEVICE=TPU python3 -c
'import torch_xla.core.xla_model as xm; print(xm.get_xla_supported_devices("TPU"))'

Google’s sample output lists xla:0 through xla:7. That is illustrative output from the example configuration, not a universal device count. The number of devices depends on the TPU type and VM configuration, so use the list returned by your own command when configuring workers or scripts.

4. Keep the environment reproducible

Record the Python version, PyTorch and torch-xla versions, TPU image, zone and the exact installation command. When a package is upgraded, rerun the device check before starting a long job. This makes it possible to distinguish a software mismatch from a quota or resource problem.

How do I run PyTorch across a Google Cloud TPU slice?

A slice is a multi-host TPU resource. The important operational difference is that installation and launch are worker-wide tasks: every worker needs the same requirements, source tree and environment before the distributed program starts.

1. Allocate the slice and identify every worker

Use the current Google Cloud resource workflow for the TPU generation you selected. Capture the worker names or addresses returned by the allocation command. Do not assume that a command or resource API from an older tutorial supports newer TPU generations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Install identical dependencies on every worker

Google’s slice example copies its requirements to all workers and installs them before launching training. Repeat the PyTorch/XLA installation, including the same release indexes and pins, on each host. A package mismatch on one worker can look like a distributed communication failure rather than a simple installation error.

3. Distribute the source code

The official example clones the PyTorch/XLA repository across workers, then runs an SPMD ResNet training script. You can use your own repository, but every worker must have the same commit, configuration files and Python entry point. Verify that relative paths and dataset locations resolve identically from each host.

4. Launch the SPMD program

Set PJRT_DEVICE=TPU in the launch environment and invoke the distributed script using the worker orchestration described by the current slice guide. The example uses fake data to demonstrate orchestration, so its output and run time are illustrative rather than a benchmark or a promise of training speed.

5. Check worker agreement before a full run

  • Print the torch-xla and PyTorch versions on every worker.
  • Print the supported XLA device list on every worker.
  • Confirm that the same script revision and configuration are present everywhere.
  • Run a short, deterministic step before starting a long training job.

If one host has a different package or cannot see its TPU devices, fix that host before retrying. Repeatedly restarting the whole slice without checking worker state usually obscures the underlying error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I adapt an existing PyTorch training loop for XLA?

PyTorch/XLA requires explicit device placement and a synchronization point that causes the lazy computation graph to execute. A loop that works on CPU or CUDA can otherwise build work without placing tensors on the TPU or without ever asking XLA to execute it.

Place both the model and input tensors on XLA

import torch
import torch_xla.core.xla_model as xm

 device = xm.xla_device()
model = MyModel().to(device)
optimizer = torch.optim.AdamW(model.parameters(), lr=1e-3)

for inputs, targets in loader:
    inputs = inputs.to(device)
    targets = targets.to(device)
    optimizer.zero_grad()
    outputs = model(inputs)
    loss = loss_fn(outputs, targets)
    loss.backward()
    xm.optimizer_step(optimizer)

The example illustrates the essential placement and step pattern. Adapt the optimizer, loader and model to your application, and follow the torch-xla release documentation for APIs that may have changed. In particular, do not assume that a CUDA-specific stream, memory or synchronization call has an XLA equivalent.

Understand lazy execution

XLA can defer operations while it builds a computation graph. The statement that appears to perform an operation may only enqueue work; an appropriate XLA synchronization or optimizer-step API triggers compilation and execution. This explains why the first step can take noticeably longer than later steps and why an error may appear at a synchronization point rather than on the line that constructed the tensor.

Use compilation deliberately

The current TorchTPU overview demonstrates torch.compile for PyTorch programs. Compilation can improve repeated workloads, but graph changes, unsupported operators or highly variable input shapes can trigger additional compilations. Start with a stable input shape and a small verification run, then inspect compile behavior before scaling out.

What actually runs on the TPU?

Google describes TPUs as “Google’s custom-developed, application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) used to accelerate machine learning workloads.” Code that runs on TPUs must be compiled by the accelerated linear algebra (XLA) compiler. In practice, framework-generated tensor computations are turned into TPU machine code, while other program work—such as Python control flow, input preparation and logging—runs on the TPU host.

This split matters when debugging. A data-loader bottleneck is a host-side problem, whereas an unsupported operation or changing tensor shape can force graph recompilation. Device placement, synchronization and compilation diagnostics should therefore be examined separately rather than treating every delay as a TPU hardware issue.

Should I use one TPU VM or a multi-host slice?

Choose the smallest resource shape that matches the workload and the software support you have verified. A single VM is simpler for interactive development and single-host calculations; a slice is appropriate when the model or throughput target requires distributed execution and you can maintain identical environments on every worker.

Use case One TPU VM Multi-host TPU slice
Initial installation Install and verify on one host Install and verify on every worker
Code launch Run a local Python process Use the slice’s distributed/SPMD orchestration
Debugging Inspect one environment and device list Compare versions, source and devices across workers
Best starting point Prototype, test a model or run a single-host job Scale a validated program that already works on one host

Do not infer performance, cost or training time from the illustrative slice tutorial. The supplied documentation does not establish a current price or price-performance comparison.

What should I check when PyTorch cannot see the TPU?

The VM or slice cannot be reached

  • Confirm the active Google Cloud project and TPU zone.
  • Check that the TPU resource still exists and that your account has permission to use it.
  • Verify quota and regional capacity; an allocation failure is not fixed by reinstalling Python packages.

Import or installation errors appear

  • Compare the TPU generation with the TorchTPU or torch-xla release support in the current documentation.
  • Check that torch, torch_xla, TPU wheels and libtpu came from the indexes intended for that release.
  • Remove conflicting packages from the environment or create a clean virtual environment, then repeat the documented install.

The device list is empty

  • For XLA, run the verification command with PJRT_DEVICE=TPU in the same shell that launches Python.
  • For TorchTPU, test a tensor created on torch.device("tpu") rather than only importing torch.
  • Check that the process is running inside the TPU VM or the intended slice worker, not on your local workstation.

The program is using the CPU unexpectedly

Print the device associated with a model parameter and an input tensor, and inspect the launch environment. In XLA code, a model left on CPU can silently make the first debugging run look successful while doing no TPU computation. In TorchTPU code, use the explicit TPU device shown by the current guide.

A distributed run fails after one worker starts

Compare package versions, source revisions, environment variables and device lists across all workers. Slice jobs require worker-wide setup; a single missing dependency or stale checkout is sufficient to prevent the group from initializing.

Which resource-management tutorials are still appropriate?

An older Google tutorial for training ResNet-50 states that “The Cloud TPU API is no longer under active development.” It also warns that the tutorial does not support TPU7x and later, and recommends Compute Engine or GKE for newer TPU resource management. Treat that tutorial as historical PyTorch/XLA context, not as a current provisioning recipe for every TPU generation.

For a new deployment, start with the current Compute Engine or GKE workflow documented for your TPU generation, then select TorchTPU or PyTorch/XLA according to the software support notes. This avoids combining a legacy allocator with a newer accelerator generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop TPU charges after testing?

Release the TPU VM or slice when the job is finished, following the deletion procedure for the resource type and management service you used. A stopped Python process does not necessarily release an allocated accelerator. Confirm in the Google Cloud console or command-line resource listing that the TPU has been deleted or deallocated, and remove any temporary worker resources created for the experiment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move the same PyTorch model between a TPU and a GPU without rewriting it?

The model architecture and most tensor operations can often remain the same, but device-selection, synchronization and compilation code are backend-specific. Keep device handling in one configuration layer so the training loop does not hard-code CUDA calls or assume eager execution.

Why is the first TPU step slower than later steps?

XLA may compile a graph the first time a particular operation and shape pattern is executed. Subsequent steps can reuse compiled code when the graph remains compatible, while changing shapes or operations can cause another compilation.

Does a TPU slice automatically install PyTorch on all workers?

No. The documented slice workflow explicitly copies requirements and installs dependencies on every worker before launching the distributed script. You must also keep the source revision and configuration synchronized.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many TPU devices should a TPU VM report?

There is no universal count. The eight-device list shown in Google’s calculation-guide example is configuration-specific; your VM’s generation and shape determine the devices returned by the XLA query.

Can the older Cloud TPU API manage every current TPU generation?

No. Google’s older ResNet tutorial says that API is no longer under active development and does not support TPU7x and later. Use the current Compute Engine or GKE resource workflow recommended for the generation you plan to run.
