Open the Copilot app from Start or the taskbar, then ask a question in chat or use its Windows-specific tools to find supported local files, ask about a screenshot, or get guidance to a Windows setting. Copilot can also interpret a screen you deliberately share during a Vision voice session, but it does not click, type, or scroll for you. Which features you see can depend on your account, subscription, rollout, and available service capacity.
Open Copilot in Windows 11
- Look for Copilot in the taskbar or open Start and search for Copilot. Microsoft says the app should generally be available on new Windows 11 PCs. If it is missing, follow the installation instructions linked from Microsoft’s Windows getting-started page.
- For the consumer Windows app experience described by Microsoft, sign in with a personal Microsoft account. Signing in provides chat history and other features.
- On a keyboard with a Copilot key, press that key; otherwise press Windows+C. Depending on your configuration, the shortcut opens the full app or Quick View. In the app, go to Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts to configure the shortcut’s behavior. On supported devices, a pen shortcut button can also be set to perform the Copilot-key action.

Choose the right way to interact
Chat, dictation, voice chat, a screenshot prompt, and Vision are different ways of giving Copilot input. The important distinction is whether you attach a still image or share a live screen, and whether you want a written or spoken exchange.

Use Copilot for Windows-specific tasks
Get help finding a Windows setting
Describe the result you want, rather than assuming Copilot will change a setting for you. For example, ask, “Make my screen easier to read” or “Help me focus by reducing distractions.” Microsoft says Copilot can guide you to the relevant Windows Settings option; check the suggested setting and apply it yourself.
Search supported local files
Ask Copilot to find a named file, or describe files by type or recency. Microsoft says Windows file search can find and open local files, including files synced from OneDrive on the device, and answer questions about them. The formats its support page lists as readable are DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, TXT, PDF, and JSON. That list is not a promise that every file, format, or cloud item is indexed. Ask about a screenshot
- Select the + in the Copilot composer.
- Choose Take a Screenshot, then select the whole screen or the part you want to ask about.
- Type your question about the capture and submit it.
This attaches a captured image to a prompt. It is not the same as a live Vision session.
View web content alongside chat
When you open a link in Copilot for Windows, its content can appear in a side pane beside the conversation. If you give permission, Copilot can use the context of tabs opened in that conversation to summarize or answer follow-up questions. The described scope is those tabs in that conversation, not unrestricted access to browser activity.

Use voice chat and the “Hey Copilot” wake word
To start voice chat, use the voice control in the Copilot prompt. In Quick View, open it with the Copilot key or Windows+C, then choose the voice-chat control. Voice chat supports a spoken back-and-forth; dictation instead turns speech into text for a prompt. Microphone permission may be required, and you can mute or end a session. Microsoft’s instructions are in its Windows voice chat guide.
“Hey Copilot” is an optional wake phrase, not an always-on conversation. Turn it on in Quick View settings if you want to use it; Microsoft says it responds when called. Feature availability and capacity can vary. See Microsoft’s wake-word instructions.

Share your screen with Copilot Vision
- Start a voice chat.
- Choose Share screen, then select a screen or app. An outline marks the shared content; Microsoft says you can share up to two apps at once.
- Ask your question aloud. To end sharing, use the floating toolbar.
Vision is off by default. Microsoft says it works with apps generally on Windows, but cannot analyze harmful or DRM-protected material. Consumer Vision currently requires a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium subscription, and access can vary during rollout. Microsoft separately describes commercial-user access to Vision in Copilot web and mobile apps with Entra ID; that does not establish availability in the Windows consumer app. Check Microsoft’s Copilot Vision requirements and sharing instructions.
What Vision cannot do
- It only works during voice chats, and usage depends on available capacity and counts toward daily voice usage.
- It cannot read videos or animated GIFs.
- Rapidly switching windows can lead to an answer based on the wrong screen context.
- It does not manipulate the computer: you must do the clicking, typing, scrolling, and setting changes yourself.

Know what screen sharing means for privacy and accuracy
Vision starts only after you begin a session and share content. Microsoft says Vision inputs—including images, audio, and shared page content—are not used to train models or personalize the experience. Session data may be retained for up to 47 hours to support feedback, then deleted if no feedback is submitted. A transcript is saved in chat history and can be deleted. Generative AI responses can be inaccurate. Verify instructions in Windows Settings before acting on them, and review generated text rather than treating it as guaranteed correct. Microsoft’s Copilot guidance advises checking answers before relying on them for decisions or actions.
