What is the difference between an Agent Skill and an MCP server?
An Agent Skill is a reusable directory of instructions and resources. An MCP server exposes executable tools. Keeping those roles separate makes a screenshot workflow repeatable: the Skill contains policy and sequencing, while Playwright MCP performs browser actions.

What should the automated capture workflow do?
A robust workflow should make the same decisions every time, rather than asking an agent to improvise. Define these stages in the Skill:

- Validate input: accept an absolute URL, an output directory, and whether the caller wants PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF.
- Open the page: navigate with the browser MCP tool and wait for the page-specific content that must appear.
- Inspect structure: request an accessibility snapshot to locate headings, controls, and status text before interacting.
- Prepare the page: dismiss consent dialogs, sign-in prompts, or overlays when the task permits; trigger any required interaction or scrolling for lazy content.
- Capture: use a full-page screenshot for the image output, or the PDF export tool for a document.
- Verify: inspect the returned file and, when useful, compare it with a visual screenshot of the page.
- Report: return exact filenames, the URL, the format, and any skipped or failed step.
Do not hard-code a universal delay. Dynamic pages differ, so the Skill should name a selector or page-specific condition that proves the content is ready. If no reliable condition exists, use a bounded delay and record that it was used.
How do I create a Skill for screenshots and PDFs?
Create a directory with a SKILL.md manifest. You can add reference notes, helper scripts, and output templates beside it. The following example is intentionally focused: it tells an agent what to do without pretending that the Skill itself can take a screenshot.

# Website capture
## When to use
Use this Skill when a user asks for a complete webpage screenshot or a PDF of a URL.
## Inputs
- Absolute URL
- Image or PDF output (or both)
- Destination filename
- Optional readiness selector, wait condition, and interaction instructions
## Procedure
1. Navigate to the URL with the browser MCP server.
2. Request an accessibility snapshot and identify the main content and any blocking dialog.
3. Wait for the requested readiness selector or documented page condition. Do not claim readiness from a fixed delay alone.
4. Dismiss an allowed consent dialog or overlay, and perform requested clicks before capture.
5. For an image, call browser_take_screenshot with fullPage=true. Do not combine fullPage with an element target.
6. For a PDF, call browser_pdf_save after confirming the MCP server has the pdf capability enabled.
7. Inspect the returned files for blank output, missing below-the-fold content, or an unhandled overlay.
8. Save files with the requested names and report the URL, format, and any limitations.
## Failure handling
- If navigation times out, retry once only if the page may still be loading; otherwise report the timeout.
- If the page is blank, capture a diagnostic screenshot and report the suspected readiness or script problem.
- Never print or commit credentials. Keep them in the active runtime.The Skill’s wording is guidance for the agent. The actual tool names and parameters must be available in the active MCP connection. Keep site-specific selectors in a reference file so the manifest remains reusable.

How do I configure Playwright MCP for PDF output?
Screenshot capture is available through Playwright MCP’s screenshot tools. PDF generation is opt-in: the server must be configured with the pdf capability before browser_pdf_save is available (Playwright MCP capabilities).

Keep credentials and files out of logs
Use the browser runtime’s secret storage or environment variables for authentication. Do not paste tokens into a Skill, commit them to a repository, or print them in a report. Microsoft’s hosted-browser guidance likewise recommends keeping short-lived access tokens only in the current shell or process rather than storing or logging them (Microsoft browser automation guidance).
How do I take a full-page website screenshot?
Use the browser’s structured inspection first, then call browser_take_screenshot with fullPage: true. Playwright documents that this captures the complete scrollable page, including content below the fold (Playwright MCP screenshots).
Step-by-step sequence
- Navigate to the target URL.
- Request an accessibility snapshot. Snapshots expose structured elements and references for interaction; they are better than guessing coordinates (Playwright MCP snapshots).
- Wait for meaningful readiness. Examples include a product grid, article heading, chart, or footer selector. For pages that load data after navigation, wait for the data-bearing element rather than the first paint.
- Resolve overlays. If the task permits, click a consent or close control found in the snapshot. If a modal is essential to the page, leave it open and report that choice.
- Trigger lazy content. Some pages load images only as they approach the viewport. Scroll through the page or use the site’s own “load more” control before taking the final shot.
- Capture the page. Call
browser_take_screenshotwithfullPage: trueand a filename whose extension matches the requested format. - Inspect the output. Check that the header, middle sections, footer, and images are present and that no loading spinner or cookie dialog obscures the page.
Full-page versus element screenshots
Playwright supports viewport captures, element captures, and full-page captures. A full-page capture cannot be combined with an element target. If you need one component only, omit fullPage and provide the element target; if you need the entire scrollable document, use fullPage: true without a target.
Choosing an image format
The screenshot reference lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP. When a filename extension is available, Playwright infers the format from it. PNG is appropriate for sharp text and transparency, JPEG is smaller for photographic pages, and WebP is a practical compressed default when your downstream system accepts it. These are format characteristics, not guarantees about a particular page’s file size.

How do I export the same page as a PDF?
After the page passes the same readiness and overlay checks, call browser_pdf_save with a destination filename. The PDF tool is separate from screenshot capture and requires the server’s PDF capability.

Browser PDF output can differ from a screenshot because print layout, paper size, margins, and page breaks affect pagination. If the result is clipped, adjust the page’s print CSS or the PDF options exposed by your MCP client rather than assuming that another screenshot will fix it.
Why should I use an accessibility snapshot before a screenshot?
A snapshot provides structured page elements and references for interaction; a screenshot shows visual appearance. Use the snapshot to find the correct consent button, tab, or “load more” control, then use the screenshot to verify spacing, typography, images, and overlays. Playwright explicitly distinguishes these purposes in its snapshot documentation (Playwright MCP snapshots).
Practical snapshot checks
- Confirm the main heading or page title matches the requested URL.
- Find a visible loading status and wait until it disappears or changes to a completed state.
- Locate dialog roles and buttons before clicking; avoid coordinate-based clicks when a reference is available.
- Check that a footer, results count, or other end-of-page marker exists before full-page capture.
How do I make the workflow reliable on dynamic pages?
Reliability comes from explicit readiness conditions and verification, not from making the delay longer.
Lazy-loaded images
Scroll incrementally through long pages, wait for image elements to obtain their final dimensions, and then return to the top if the visual capture must begin there. A full-page flag captures the scrollable document, but it does not guarantee that a site’s JavaScript has already fetched every lazy asset.

Animations and rotating content
Pause or disable animations when the page offers a setting, or wait for a stable state such as a completed carousel transition. Record the condition in the report so a later run can distinguish a genuine page change from capture timing.
Infinite scroll
Define a stopping rule in the Skill: a known item count, a “no more results” message, or a maximum number of scroll cycles. Without a stopping rule, an agent can keep requesting content indefinitely.
Authenticated pages
Establish the session through the approved login flow or a pre-authenticated browser context. Never place passwords or session tokens in SKILL.md, screenshots, filenames, or logs. If access expires, report an authentication failure rather than repeatedly submitting credentials.
Bot checks and blank responses
A bot challenge, blank document, or script failure is a different outcome from a successful capture. Save a diagnostic artifact when policy permits, include the observed state in the report, and do not label the run complete merely because a file was created.

When is a hosted browser runtime useful?
A hosted runtime is optional. It becomes useful when a team needs managed browser sessions, run visibility, screenshots or recordings, human takeover, summaries, traces, and diagnostics. Microsoft documents these capabilities in its hosted Browser Automation pattern (Microsoft Foundry browser automation). You can still run the core workflow locally with Playwright MCP; hosting is a deployment choice, not a prerequisite.

How should I organize files and reports?
Use deterministic names that include a safe slug, date, format, and optional viewport, for example docs-example-com_2026-10-26_fullpage.png and docs-example-com_2026-10-26.pdf. Keep the original URL, final URL after redirects, readiness condition, capture format, and any skipped interaction in a small sidecar report. This makes reruns auditable without putting credentials into filenames or logs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Agent Skill take screenshots without MCP?
No. A Skill can describe the procedure and decide when a capture is needed, but it does not provide a live browser by itself. It needs an MCP server or another tool implementation to navigate and save files.
Can I capture a full-page screenshot and a specific element in one Playwright call?
No. Playwright MCP treats full-page capture and element targeting as mutually exclusive modes. Run separate calls when you need both artifacts.
Why does my PDF look different from the screenshot?
PDF export follows print layout rules, including paper size, margins, print CSS, and page breaks. A screenshot represents screen layout, so matching the two may require print-specific CSS or PDF settings.
Is a fixed five-second wait enough for every website?
No. Load times and client-side rendering vary by page. Prefer a selector or status change that proves the needed content is ready, and use a bounded delay only as a fallback.
