Violet unlocks automatically for every Deadlock player. Valve released her globally on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time as part of the City Never Sleeps rollout. You do not need to buy her, complete a quest, reach a level, or spend a priority token. If she still shows as locked, fully restart Deadlock and Steam, allow the pending update to install, then add Violet from Create Roster.
What Violet’s unlock actually requires
There is no personal unlock condition for Violet. Her availability is controlled by Valve’s scheduled hero rollout, so the change applies to the player base rather than to individual accounts. Once the release time has passed and your game client has received the update, Violet becomes selectable like the other available heroes.
- Release time: Friday, October 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
- Cost: None. Violet is not sold separately and does not require a pass or other payment.
- Progression: No account level, match count, quest, achievement, or grind is required.
- Priority tokens: Optional. They can improve your chance of receiving a popular hero in a match, but they do not unlock Violet.
The important distinction is between unlocking Violet and being assigned Violet. Unlocking makes her eligible for your roster. Match selection still depends on the normal hero-selection system, and a priority token only influences those selection odds.

- Confirm that the release window has passed. Violet’s global release was October 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time. If you are checking before that point, the locked state is expected. After the date, continue with the update steps below.
- Exit Deadlock completely. Close the game rather than leaving it suspended in the background. A full restart gives Steam an opportunity to detect and apply the hero update.
- Restart Steam if necessary. If no download appears, quit and reopen the Steam client. Wait for any Deadlock update to finish before launching the game again.
- Open Create Roster. From the game’s roster-creation screen, locate Violet and add her to the heroes you are willing to play. Adding her here makes her part of your eligible selection pool; it is not a purchase step.
- Queue for a supported mode. Start a Standard or Street Brawl match with Violet in your roster. Her inclusion means the selection system may assign her; it does not guarantee that she will be the hero you receive in a particular match.
- Use a priority token only if you want better selection odds. If Violet is attracting many players, a token can improve the likelihood that you receive her when the match is formed. Saving the token is also valid because Violet is already unlocked without it.
If the hero appears in Create Roster after the restart, the unlock is complete even if you do not immediately play her. The remaining wait is a match-selection issue, not an account-unlock issue.

Why Violet may still appear locked
A lock shown after the release time usually means the client has not applied the rollout update yet. Work through these checks in order:

Restarting is the first practical fix because the lock can be a stale client state. If Steam shows no update at all, close both Deadlock and Steam before reopening Steam; the game must receive the rollout data before the roster can change.
Do priority tokens unlock Violet?
No. Priority tokens affect the probability of receiving a popular hero when a match is assembled. They are not an access key, payment substitute, or progression requirement.
For example, if Violet is already in your Create Roster and the match system is choosing among several requested heroes, spending a token may improve your selection odds. You can still fail to receive Violet, because a token does not guarantee the assignment. Conversely, you can receive Violet without spending one if the normal selection process chooses her for you.

Think of the process as two separate gates:
- Global availability: Valve’s rollout unlocks Violet for everyone after the scheduled time.
- Match assignment: The selection system decides which eligible hero you play in a specific match. Priority tokens operate only here.
How the City Never Sleeps rollout worked
City Never Sleeps introduced six heroes in a staggered, vote-determined order instead of enabling all six on one day. The vote decided which hero arrived first, second, and so on; it did not create a personal achievement path for any hero.

The staggered approach explains why Violet could remain unavailable while earlier City Never Sleeps heroes were playable. It was a calendar-based rollout, not a sign that your account was missing a prerequisite.
What Violet can do after she is unlocked
Violet’s kit combines guided ranged attacks, movement control, a line-of-sight channel, and a vision-denial area ability. The abilities below describe what becomes available once she is on your roster; they are not additional unlock tasks.
Living Ink: steer three empowered bullets
Living Ink empowers Violet’s next three bullets. While those bullets are in flight, Violet can steer them, giving her more control than a standard straight-shot attack. The empowered bullets deal increased bullet damage and add splash Spirit damage.

Hero hits also reduce ability cooldowns and partially reduce item cooldowns. That creates a feedback loop: accurate guided shots can bring Violet’s other tools back sooner, while missed shots provide less cooldown value. The ability therefore rewards deliberate targeting rather than firing the three rounds indiscriminately.
Flow State: help allies slide and control a route
Flow State sends a traveling brush trail across the battlefield. Allied players who use the trail gain increased slide distance, while enemies on it are slowed and damaged. Violet can reactivate the ability to end the cast, producing a larger Spirit-damage burst.
The trail serves two purposes at once: it can improve allied movement through an area and make that same route uncomfortable for opponents. Because reactivation ends the cast, Violet must choose between keeping the trail active for movement control and cashing it out for the larger burst.

Still Life: channel a target, then gain a lasting boost
Still Life channels on a chosen enemy while Violet maintains visual contact. Completing the sketch stuns the target, deals additional Spirit damage, and drops a sketch on the ground.

Collecting that sketch grants Violet a permanent hero-based stat boost. The ability therefore has a clear setup requirement: she must keep line of sight long enough to finish the sketch. Breaking visual contact interrupts the practical opportunity to complete the channel, so walls, cover, and enemy movement matter when deciding whom to target.
Abstract Landscape: deny vision and punish exits
Abstract Landscape creates a circular ink display. It blocks vision, grants allied Spirit, and reveals enemies inside the area. Enemies that leave are punished with Spirit damage, silence, and slow.
This is Violet’s strongest area-control tool. Allies can use the circle to gain its Spirit benefit, while opponents must decide whether to remain inside a revealed, vision-blocked zone or leave and accept the exit penalties. The ability is especially defined by information control: it changes what each side can see while attaching a cost to escaping.

These mechanics make Violet distinct from a hero whose value comes only from immediate burst damage. She can pressure at range with steerable bullets, shape movement with a brush trail, invest time in a line-of-sight channel, and control a whole area with the ink display. The kit also has visible setup demands: Living Ink benefits from accurate hero hits, Still Life requires uninterrupted sight, and Flow State asks you to decide when to end the trail.

Unlocking versus learning Violet
Once Violet is added to your roster, the game does not require a second progression step before her abilities function. The practical learning questions are instead about timing and positioning:
- Use Living Ink when you can maintain a clear target and make the guided shots count.
- Place Flow State where allies can exploit the longer slides and enemies must cross or contest the trail.
- Attempt Still Life when you can preserve visual contact long enough to complete the sketch.
- Reserve Abstract Landscape for situations where vision, movement, and the exit penalties all matter, rather than treating it as ordinary area damage.
Those are play decisions, not prerequisites. You do not need to complete a tutorial, earn a stat boost, or use a priority token before Violet’s kit is available.
Quick checklist

- Deadlock and Steam have been fully restarted.
- Any pending Deadlock update has finished downloading and installing.

After these checks, Violet should be globally available. If she is in your roster but does not appear in a particular match, that is normal assignment variance rather than a failed unlock.
