Google does not provide a permanent, account-wide switch for AI Overviews in ordinary Search. Google classifies them as a core Search feature, so the documented way to get a page of conventional results is to run your search and choose the Web filter. That filter is applied one search at a time. Search Labs has an AI in Search setting, but it controls an experiment rather than every core Overview. AI Mode is another, separate Labs experiment.
This guide explains which control affects which experience, how to find the Web filter on desktop and mobile layouts, what to do when it is hidden, and how to avoid treating an AI-generated answer as verified information.
Can I turn off Google AI Overviews completely?
No. Google Search Help says, “AI Overviews are a core Google Search feature, like knowledge panels. Features cannot be turned off.” There is therefore no documented account setting that permanently removes every Overview from ordinary Google Search.

The practical alternative is to switch an individual results page to Web. This produces a text-link view without AI Overviews and other feature modules covered by that filter. Because the choice applies to the current search, you must select it again for another query.

That distinction matters: an account-wide preference, an experimental Labs toggle and a one-search results filter have different scope and permanence. Choosing the right one prevents you from expecting a Labs control to change a core Search feature.
How do I make Google show only normal links?
Use the Web filter after each search. It is Google’s documented method for displaying text-based links without an AI Overview.
- Open Google Search and enter your query normally.
- Submit the search and look at the filter row below the search box.
- Select Web. If Web is not shown in the row, select More, then choose Web from the additional filters.
- Read the resulting page as a list of text-based links. The Overview and other modules covered by the Web filter are omitted.
The filter is not a permanent preference. A new search starts with Google’s standard result presentation, so repeat the same steps whenever you want a link-only page. The exact position of the controls can vary as Google updates Search, but Web remains the relevant filter name in the documented workflow.
What you should see after selecting Web
The page is designed around conventional web links rather than an AI-generated summary. Results can still include ordinary ranking, titles and snippets; “Web” does not mean that Google stops indexing or ranking pages. It changes the result presentation for that search.
What is the difference between the Web filter and turning off Search Labs?
The Web filter acts on one results page, while Search Labs settings affect particular experiments for an eligible account. Turning off a Labs experiment does not create a documented, account-wide switch for core AI Overviews.

Use Web when your immediate goal is a page of links. Use Labs controls when your goal is to stop participating in an experiment you enabled. They solve different problems.

How do I turn off the experimental “AI in Search” feature?
Google documents a Labs control for the experimental AI in Search feature. It is separate from the core AI Overviews behavior described above.

- Use a regular browser window, not Incognito.
- Open Google Search Labs.
- Choose Manage to view experiments associated with your account.
- Find AI in Search and toggle it off.
This setting applies to the experiment. It should not be interpreted as a promise that every AI Overview disappears from every ordinary Search query. If an Overview still appears, use the Web filter for that search.
Labs availability is conditional. Google can limit an experiment by account, country, language or rollout stage, and the labels or location can change as Search settings are updated. If you do not see AI in Search under Manage, that generally means the experiment is not enabled or not available to that account at that moment.
What is AI Mode, and does disabling it remove AI Overviews?
AI Mode is a separate Search Labs experiment, not another name for the standard Overview. Google describes it as opt-in and provides a Labs toggle for people who enabled it.
If you enabled AI Mode and do not want that separate interface, disable its own toggle in Search Labs. Avoiding AI Mode prevents that experiment from becoming part of your Search experience, but Google’s documentation still treats ordinary AI Overviews as a core Search feature. You may therefore need Web for a link-only page even when AI Mode is off.
Keep the two experiments separate
- AI in Search: an experimental AI Search feature controlled from Labs.
- AI Mode: a distinct, opt-in Labs experience with its own control.
- AI Overviews: a core Search feature for which Google does not document an account-wide off switch.
Confusing these labels is the most common reason a user disables a Labs option yet still sees an Overview in ordinary results.

Which option should I use for a particular goal?
Choose based on whether you need a temporary link-only page or want to leave an experiment.

For repeated research sessions, treat Web as a quick, repeatable step rather than a saved account preference. For an experiment you no longer want, change its Labs toggle once and then check whether the separate feature has disappeared.
What should I do if the Web filter is missing?
Web may not appear in the first row even though it is available. Work through these checks in order.
- Open More. The filter row can show only a subset of choices. Select More and look for Web in the expanded list.
- Confirm that the search completed. The filters appear on the results page, not on the initial Google home page.
- Check the current interface. Google says Search settings are being updated, so labels and placement may differ from one account or device to another.
- Consider eligibility and rollout. Filter presentation, Labs availability, language, country and account status can vary. A control available to one user may not yet appear for another.
- Try a standard signed-in browser window. Incognito and signed-out sessions do not expose every Labs control, and the documented Labs path specifically requires a signed-in, non-Incognito browser.
If Web is unavailable in your current layout, there is no documented permanent replacement switch for core Overviews. Check More again after the results load and rely on the filter when Google exposes it.
Does turning off Search Labs remove all AI summaries?
No. Labs controls are scoped to experiments. Disabling AI in Search stops that experimental feature for the account when the setting is available, and disabling AI Mode stops that separate opt-in experience. Neither setting is documented as a master control for all core AI Overviews.
When your priority is to avoid an AI summary on a specific query, select Web after running the search. This is the control whose documented output is text-based links without the Overview.

How can I limit exposure without changing account settings?
The least disruptive approach is to keep your normal Search behavior and use Web only when you want conventional links. It requires no account change and can be applied selectively to sensitive, technical or time-critical searches.

- Immediately inspect the filter row rather than relying on the first block of content.
- Choose Web, using More if necessary.
- Open several relevant links and compare their wording, date and supporting detail before acting.
This routine limits the Overview’s role without implying that every Google result page can be permanently customized. It also keeps access to Google’s other filters when they are useful for a different type of search.
Can I trust information in an AI Overview?
Google warns that AI responses may contain mistakes and recommends checking important information in more than one place. An Overview is therefore a starting point, not a substitute for reading the underlying sources when accuracy matters.
For health, legal, financial, safety or other high-consequence decisions, open the linked pages, identify the date and authority of each source, and confirm the key claim independently. If the summary and the source pages disagree, treat the source material and professional guidance as the information that needs to be resolved—not the summary as an automatic verdict.
Why the Web view can help verification
The Web filter removes the generated summary from the presentation and puts text links first. That makes it easier to inspect multiple pages directly, but it does not guarantee that every linked page is accurate, current or authoritative. Verification remains necessary whichever result view you use.

Google’s Search settings are being updated, and its help documentation cautions that the current interface may not match every user’s experience. Filter placement, the availability of Labs experiments and the appearance of AI features can change with rollout status, country, language and account eligibility.

Consequently, instructions such as “select Web” are more durable than a precise screen location. On one device Web may be visible beside the other filters; on another it may be inside More. Labs may show one experiment, both experiments or neither.
What is the practical bottom line?
There is no documented permanent switch for core Google AI Overviews. Use the Web filter for a text-link page on the current search, disable AI in Search or AI Mode only when you want to leave those separate Labs experiments, and verify important claims against more than one source.

Will the Web filter stay on for my next Google search?
No. Web is a per-search filter, so a later query can return to Google’s standard presentation. Select Web again whenever you want the text-link view.
