If you are looking for a single Turn off Meta AI switch, there is not one. Meta currently does not provide a documented global setting that disables Meta AI across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
You can still reduce or remove Meta AI in practical ways: delete or archive its chat, reset the information the AI has retained, and disable message sharing in supported Messenger conversations. The correct option depends on whether you want to hide the chat, remove your copy of it, or delete the AI’s stored conversational context.
What “turn off Meta AI” actually means
Meta separates the visible chat from the information held by the AI. These are different actions:

Commands and settings are not available to every account, platform, region, or chat type. If an option is missing, that does not necessarily indicate a problem with your app.

Reset Meta AI’s stored information first
If your main concern is what Meta AI remembers from a conversation, deleting the chat is not enough. Send the appropriate command inside the AI conversation.
Reset one Meta AI conversation
- Open the Meta AI conversation in Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp.
- Tap or click the message box.
- Send
/reset-aias a message. - Follow any confirmation or response shown by the service.
This resets that individual AI by deleting its copy of the messages and previous conversational context. The chat can still remain visible in your inbox until you delete it separately.
Reset all Meta AIs on an app
- Open any relevant Meta AI conversation.
- Send
/reset-all-ais. - Wait for Meta’s response confirming or explaining the reset.
This resets all Meta AIs on the relevant app, including AIs participating in group chats. It does not remove the visible copies of those conversations.
On Messenger, you can send /ai-options to display available AI commands. You can also type / or @ in a chat to open the command menu. Meta says these commands are not available on every platform or for every person.
Facebook and Messenger
Delete Meta AI from the Facebook web inbox
- At the top right of Facebook, click Messenger.
- Click the Meta AI chat.
- At the top of the chat, click Options.
- Click Delete chat.
- Click Delete chat again to confirm.
Deleting the chat permanently removes it from your inbox and cannot be undone. It does not delete the conversation from another participant’s inbox. If you also want to clear the AI’s stored context, send /reset-ai before deleting the visible chat, or use /reset-all-ais if you want to reset all Meta AIs on that app.
Hide Meta AI without deleting the chat
- At the top right of Facebook, click Messenger.
- Hover over the Meta AI conversation.
- Click Options.
- Click Archive chat.
Archiving preserves the chat history but removes the conversation from the main inbox. It is not a permanent block: the chat can reappear if a new message is sent in the conversation.

Restrict AI features in a Messenger conversation
Some Messenger chats have a setting that prevents participants from sharing messages with Meta AI. It is a conversation-level control, not a global Meta AI switch.

- Open the conversation in Messenger.
- Tap the chat name at the top.
- Under Privacy & support, tap Message permissions.
- Turn off Allow message sharing.
With this setting disabled, people in that chat cannot use supported AI features that involve sharing messages with Meta AI, such as summarizing with Meta AI or asking Meta AI to edit another person’s photo.
In a one-to-one chat, either participant can change the setting. In a group chat, only an administrator can change it. The feature is being introduced gradually and may not appear in Marketplace or community chats.
Use Meta AI in a group chat?
Messenger allows Meta AI to be mentioned in some existing group or multi-person chats with @Meta AI. The command menu may also appear when you type / or @. If you do not see these commands, they may not be enabled for your account, platform, region, or chat.
Delete the Meta AI conversation from Instagram’s web inbox
- On Instagram, click Messages on the left.
- Click the Meta AI conversation.
- Click the control in the top-right corner of the chat.
- Click Delete Chat.
- Click Delete to confirm.
This removes the conversation from your Instagram inbox only. It does not remove other participants’ copies of the conversation.

- Open an individual Meta AI chat on Instagram.
- Send
/reset-ai. - To reset all Meta AIs on Instagram, send
/reset-all-aisinstead.
The reset commands delete the AI’s copy of relevant messages and previous conversational context while leaving your visible chat copy in place. Delete the chat separately if you also want it removed from your inbox.

Delete the WhatsApp-side AI chat
Delete the Meta AI conversation in WhatsApp using the app’s normal chat-delete controls. This deletes the chat on WhatsApp, but it does not by itself delete Meta’s copy of messages used by the AI.
The exact button names can vary by phone and WhatsApp version, but the process is generally:
- Open WhatsApp.
- Find the Meta AI conversation in the Chats list.
- On Android, press and hold the chat; on iPhone, swipe left on it.
- Choose Delete or Delete Chat, then confirm.
Delete Meta AI’s stored copy and context on WhatsApp
- Open the relevant Meta AI conversation.
- Send
/reset-ai. - To reset every Meta AI on WhatsApp, send
/reset-all-ais.
These commands remove the AI’s copy of messages and saved conversational details. The visible WhatsApp conversation stays in your chat list until you delete it separately.

The Meta AI chat does not appear
Meta AI is not available to every account, device, region, or group. Messenger also states that its AI commands are not available to everyone. Try updating the app, checking the service on its supported web interface, and looking for the chat again. If it still does not appear, there may be no AI conversation or control enabled for your account.
The reset command does nothing
Commands are platform- and account-dependent. Open the AI chat itself rather than a normal conversation, type /ai-options in Messenger, and check the command menu. If the command is unavailable, deleting or archiving the visible chat may still be available, but that action should not be treated as an AI-data reset.
Meta AI reappears after archiving
This is expected. Archive only hides the conversation. A new message can return it to your inbox. Use delete if you want to remove your visible copy, and use /reset-ai or /reset-all-ais if you also want to clear the AI’s retained context.

AI remains in a group after you leave
Leaving or being removed from a Facebook group does not necessarily remove content that was previously sent in certain AI chats while you were a member. People removed or banned from a group may still be able to see previously sent content in those chats.
Common mistakes
- Deleting the chat and assuming Meta’s copy is gone: delete the visible conversation and send
/reset-aiseparately. - Assuming archive is a permanent opt-out: archived chats can return after a new message.
- Assuming “Allow message sharing” disables Meta AI everywhere: it only restricts supported AI features in that Messenger conversation.
- Expecting your deletion to remove everyone else’s copy: Facebook and Instagram delete the chat from your inbox only.
- Looking for “Unsend” in Messenger: Meta now generally labels the actions Delete for you and Delete for everyone. Some locations, including community chats, may still show Remove or Unsend.

Can I completely turn off Meta AI on Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp?
No global “Turn off Meta AI” switch is currently documented for these services. You can delete or archive the AI chat, reset Meta AI’s stored context, and restrict message sharing in supported Messenger chats.
Does deleting a Meta AI chat delete Meta’s copy of my messages?
Not necessarily. Deleting the visible chat is separate from deleting the AI-side copy. Send /reset-ai for one AI or /reset-all-ais for all Meta AIs on that app.
What does /reset-ai do?

Can I stop Meta AI from using messages in a Messenger chat?
Where available, open the chat, tap its name, select Privacy & support, tap Message permissions, and turn off Allow message sharing. This restricts supported AI features in that chat; it is not a global shutdown.
Why did Meta AI return after I archived it?
Archiving hides the chat but does not block new messages. The conversation can reappear when a new message is sent.
The Bottom Line
There is currently no universal switch that turns Meta AI off across Meta’s apps. For the most complete cleanup, send /reset-ai in the relevant conversation, or /reset-all-ais to reset all Meta AIs on that app, then delete the visible chat. On Messenger, turn off Allow message sharing in individual supported chats to restrict AI features there.
