To turn Telegram contact syncing off, open the mobile app and go to Settings > Privacy and Security. On Android, open Contacts and switch off Sync Contacts. On iPhone or iPad, open Data Settings and switch off Sync Contacts. If Telegram has already uploaded contacts, use Delete Synced Contacts separately; turning synchronization off alone does not remove previously synced contacts.
Turn off contact sync on Android
- Open Telegram.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Privacy and Security.
- Scroll to the Contacts section.
- Turn Sync Contacts off.
This stops Telegram from continuously synchronizing the address book on that device. The exact wording or position of a setting can vary slightly with the Telegram version, Android manufacturer, or app language.
Turn off contact sync on iPhone or iPad
- Open Telegram.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Privacy and Security.
- Tap Data Settings.
- Turn Sync Contacts off.
On iOS and iPadOS, Telegram places the contact controls one level deeper than on Android. If the option is unavailable or does not work, check that Telegram still has permission to access your contacts in the device’s privacy settings.

- Delete Synced Contacts: removes contacts that Telegram previously imported and stored for contact matching and related features.
For a more complete cleanup, do both actions in this order: turn off Sync Contacts first, then delete the previously synced contacts. If synchronization remains enabled, Telegram may upload the current device address book again after the deletion.
Delete synced contacts on Android
- Open Telegram > Settings > Privacy and Security.
- Open the Contacts section.
- Tap Delete Synced Contacts.
- Confirm the deletion if Telegram displays a confirmation prompt.
Delete synced contacts on iPhone or iPad
- Open Telegram > Settings > Privacy and Security > Data Settings.
- Tap Delete Synced Contacts.
- Confirm the deletion if prompted.
Deleting synced contacts does not delete your Telegram account. It also does not delete people from the phone’s native Contacts app. To remove someone from the device address book, use the phone’s own Contacts app; that is a separate action.
Turn contact sync back on
Return to the same screen for your device and turn Sync Contacts on:
- Android: Settings > Privacy and Security > Contacts > Sync Contacts.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > Privacy and Security > Data Settings > Sync Contacts.
Telegram must be allowed to access your device contacts. If contact access was denied, restore it in the device’s app-permission or privacy settings. The exact menu varies by Android manufacturer and iOS version, so look for Telegram’s Contacts permission rather than relying on one universal operating-system path.
After permission is restored and synchronization is enabled, Telegram can read the address book and synchronize it again. If you previously used Delete Synced Contacts, contacts may be uploaded again because synchronization is now active.

What Telegram contact syncing does
Telegram requests permission before reading and synchronizing contacts. The stated purpose is to help Telegram notify you when people in your address book join Telegram and to show their saved names in relevant places, including notifications. Telegram’s privacy documentation says the contact information used for this function includes phone numbers and first and last names.
Contact synchronization involves sending address-book information to Telegram’s servers for the contact-related features. Turning off synchronization prevents further ongoing syncing from that device, while Delete Synced Contacts removes contacts already imported through this feature. These controls are available in Telegram’s mobile apps; do not assume that the same contact-import controls are available in every desktop or web client.

Why unfamiliar contacts may appear in Telegram
If Telegram shows people who are not currently saved in your phone’s address book, the account may previously have been used on another person’s device, or those people may have been present in the address book during an earlier login or synchronization.
To clear those previously imported contacts:
- Turn Sync Contacts off.
- Open Delete Synced Contacts on the same platform-specific settings screen.
- Confirm the deletion.
- Leave synchronization off if you do not want the current address book uploaded again.
On Android, the route is Settings > Privacy and Security > Contacts > Delete Synced Contacts. On iPhone and iPad, use Settings > Privacy and Security > Data Settings > Delete Synced Contacts.
Contact sync is not the same as frequent-contact suggestions
Telegram has a separate setting called Suggest Frequent Contacts. This controls suggestions based on people and inline bots you message frequently. Disabling it removes the relevant suggestion data and stops Telegram from calculating those frequent-contact ratings.

It does not disable address-book synchronization. To stop Telegram from importing or continuously checking the device address book, change Sync Contacts. If you also want to remove frequent-contact suggestions, change Suggest Frequent Contacts separately.

A contact still appears after sync was turned off
Turning off synchronization does not automatically delete contacts already imported. Use Delete Synced Contacts after switching off Sync Contacts. Also remember that a Telegram contact and a contact in the phone’s address book are separate records.
A contact does not appear after synchronization is enabled
Try these steps in order:
- Confirm that Telegram has permission to access contacts.
- Update Telegram to the latest version available for the device.
- Close and relaunch Telegram.
- Check that the person’s phone number is saved correctly in the device’s address book, including the country code where appropriate.
- Temporarily change the contact’s name in the phone’s address book, save it, and check Telegram again; then restore the preferred name if necessary.
Re-logging into Telegram is a later troubleshooting option, not a first step. Signing out and back in can remove device-specific Secret Chats from that device, so do not use re-login casually if those chats matter.
Deleting someone in Telegram does not keep them deleted
If a person remains in the phone’s address book while contact synchronization is enabled, Telegram may add or refresh that person again. Remove the person from the device address book as well, or leave Sync Contacts disabled if you do not want address-book changes reflected in Telegram.
Quick checklist
- Need to stop future address-book syncing? Turn off Sync Contacts.
- Need to remove contacts already imported? Use Delete Synced Contacts too.
- Need to restore syncing? Turn on Sync Contacts and grant Telegram contact permission.
- Seeing frequent-contact suggestions? Change Suggest Frequent Contacts; it is a separate setting.
- Seeing old or unfamiliar contacts? Disable syncing, delete synced contacts, and avoid re-enabling sync unless you want the current address book uploaded again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off Telegram contact sync delete contacts already imported?
No. Turning off Sync Contacts stops ongoing synchronization, but previously imported contacts can remain. Use Delete Synced Contacts separately to remove them from Telegram.

Will deleting synced contacts delete people from my phone?
No. Delete Synced Contacts removes contacts imported into Telegram. It does not remove entries from the device’s native Contacts app.
Can I disable contact sync from Telegram Desktop or Telegram Web?
The documented controls are in Telegram’s Android and iOS mobile apps. Desktop and web clients may not expose the same contact-import controls, so change this setting in the mobile app.
Why did Telegram sync contacts again after I deleted them?
If Sync Contacts was still enabled, Telegram can synchronize the device address book again. Turn synchronization off before using Delete Synced Contacts if you want to prevent that.
