If an AI assistant gets your command wrong, first determine where the failure happened: it may not have detected its wake phrase, it may have transcribed your words incorrectly, or it may have understood you but been unable to perform the request. Check the device’s activation indicator and, when available, its transcript or voice history before changing settings or buying hardware. Then work through language, microphone, noise, connection, and command-support checks for your specific platform.
Why does my voice assistant keep misunderstanding me?
Voice commands pass through several stages. A device must detect that you are speaking to it, capture the audio, convert speech into words, interpret what you want, and then carry out an action. A failure at any stage can feel like the assistant “didn’t understand,” but the fix depends on which stage went wrong.
Use this distinction to start:
- No activation: The speaker or display shows no sign that it detected the wake phrase, or the assistant does not begin listening. Check the microphone mute state and activation settings.
- Wrong words: The assistant activates but captures a transcript that differs from what you said. Look for an available transcript or recording, then troubleshoot language and recording conditions.
- Correct words, no action: The transcript is right, but the assistant misunderstands the intent, says it cannot help, or fails to complete the task. Check whether the service or device supports the request and whether it has a connection.
This is more useful than treating every failure as a microphone problem. For example, a clear transcript followed by a refusal to control a device points toward command support or setup, not speech capture.
How can I tell whether it heard the wake phrase?
Check the device’s visual or audible indicator when you say the wake phrase, and verify that its microphone is not muted. Google’s Home troubleshooting guidance specifically uses the speaker or display indicator to check whether the hotword was recognized.

- Confirm the device is powered on and its microphone is enabled.
- Say the wake phrase once from your usual speaking position, then look for the device’s listening indicator.
- If there is no response, try again from closer range in a quieter room.
- Check that the relevant assistant feature is enabled. For Siri, Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends confirming Siri is enabled and, when needed, repeating the voice setup prompts.
For supported Google Home speakers and displays, hotword sensitivity can be adjusted. Google says this control is available on most speakers and displays but only in some languages; a change applies to people using that device. Its availability and exact controls may differ by model and language.
If the device activates reliably but gets the words wrong, changing wake-word sensitivity is unlikely to address the main problem. Move on to checking the captured speech.
How do I check what the assistant actually heard?
Use a transcript or voice-history feature if your service provides one. It can separate a recognition error from a misunderstanding that happened after the words were captured.
Google Assistant and Google Home
Google’s Assistant SDK troubleshooting flow recommends inspecting the sample output transcript. For a consumer Home speaker or display, repeat the request and try speaking more slowly or using a different phrasing if recognition remains incorrect. SDK troubleshooting applies to an SDK implementation; its audio diagnostics should not be mistaken for a universal setting path on every Google consumer device.
Alexa on Echo
Alexa History in the Alexa app lets users review voice recordings that were streamed to the cloud and inspect the transcript of what Alexa thought was said. Compare the transcript with your command. If the words are wrong, focus on capture conditions; if they are right, investigate the request or device capability instead.

ChatGPT Voice
ChatGPT Voice provides a transcript after a conversation, but OpenAI cautions that it may not exactly match what was spoken. Overlapping speech, background noise, and rapid conversation can contribute to differences. Treat the transcript as diagnostic evidence, not a guaranteed word-for-word record.
Not every platform provides the same kind of history, and transcript visibility does not mean the underlying recording is stored or controlled in the same way across services. Review that platform’s privacy settings before changing history or recording options.

What should I change if the transcript has the wrong words?
Start with language and recording conditions, then test one change at a time. A short, clear command in a quiet setting is a useful way to find out whether the issue is tied to language, noise, or the original phrasing.
Check the selected language
- ChatGPT: If voice input detects the wrong language, OpenAI’s guidance says to choose the preferred language under Settings > Voice > Language.
- Echo: Amazon directs users to change the device language in the Alexa app’s device settings. Amazon also warns that some Echo languages may not support every capability, skill, music option, or content type.
- Siri: Apple says Siri availability and features vary by language and country or region. A feature or behavior available in one language or location may not be available in another.
Language settings matter both for recognizing speech and for what the assistant can do after recognition. If a command works in one language but not another, check the platform’s support for that language and the specific capability before assuming the microphone is faulty.
Reduce competing sound and speak toward the device
Try a quieter room, avoid speaking over other people, and speak toward the device without covering its microphone. For a live ChatGPT Voice conversation interrupted by overlap, OpenAI suggests a quieter environment or headphones. OpenAI also identifies network conditions and microphone settings as factors that can affect Voice.

Make sure the microphone is not muted or obstructed, and test from a normal, reasonably close speaking distance. Google’s Assistant SDK audio guidance recommends a good-quality microphone positioned near the user and avoiding clipped audio. This is engineering guidance for the SDK audio pipeline, not evidence that every consumer should buy an external microphone.
The SDK guidance also cautions against assuming that extra noise-reduction processing will help in that particular pipeline. That point is specific to the implementation described by Google; it should not be generalized to all smart speakers, phones, or voice services.
What if it hears the words but still will not carry out the command?
If the captured words are correct, check the request’s meaning and whether the service or device supports the requested action. Speech recognition and command execution are separate problems: a device can accurately transcribe a request that it cannot fulfill.
- Check whether the command depends on a capability, skill, connected device, or content type that is available on your platform.
- Try a simpler version of the request that makes the intended action explicit.
- If the request concerns a connected device, verify that the assistant is being asked to control a capability that device supports.
- Consult the relevant platform’s support information if the transcript is accurate but the action still fails.
Google’s Assistant SDK troubleshooting flow treats unsupported device capabilities as distinct from speech-recognition problems. This distinction is useful across the diagnostic process: an accurate transcript means you should not keep changing microphones without evidence of bad audio capture.

How do I check power, Wi-Fi, and other basic settings?
Confirm power, microphone state, and connectivity before making more involved changes. Then restart the device using the method recommended for its platform and retest the same short command.
- Check that the device is powered and the microphone is not muted.
- Confirm the network connection is available, especially if the assistant normally relies on an internet connection for the requested service.
- For Echo, check Wi-Fi and move the device away from walls, other speakers, and background noise.
- For Google Home speakers and displays, Google recommends disconnecting and reconnecting power.
- For Echo, Amazon recommends unplugging and reconnecting the device.
- For Siri, Apple says an internet connection is required for normal operation and recommends updating device software when appropriate.
After a restart, repeat the same command from the same location. If the outcome changes, that is useful evidence that power, connection, or a temporary device state may have contributed. If it does not, return to the activation, transcript, language, and capability checks rather than repeating the restart indefinitely.
What platform-specific steps should I try before escalating?
Use the checks that match the assistant you are troubleshooting; menu names and feature availability can vary by device, language, and region.
Google Home speakers and displays
- Look for the device indicator when speaking the hotword and check that the microphone is enabled.
- If hotword detection is the problem, check whether hotword sensitivity is available for that device and language.
- Disconnect and reconnect power, then test a short command.
- If recognition is still inaccurate, speak more slowly or try a different question. In an SDK implementation, inspect the sample transcript and investigate microphone configuration if the audio is noisy or distorted.
Amazon Echo
- Check Alexa History in the Alexa app to compare the recording and transcript with the command you intended.
- Check the Echo’s device language in the Alexa app’s device settings if it is detecting the wrong language.
- Check Wi-Fi, reduce background noise, and move the Echo away from walls and other speakers.
- Unplug and reconnect the Echo, then try the command again.
ChatGPT Voice
- If voice input detects the wrong language, choose the preferred language under Settings > Voice > Language.
- For interruptions or confused turns, reduce overlapping speech; try a quieter environment or headphones.
- Review the conversation transcript as a clue, while allowing for possible differences from the spoken conversation.
- If the issue persists, consider whether microphone settings or network conditions are affecting Voice.
Siri
- Confirm Siri is enabled, and repeat the voice setup prompts if recognition needs retraining.
- Check the internet connection and update device software when appropriate.
- Apple suggests toggling Siri listening setup off and on, then retraining it if needed.
- If Siri still does not respond, Apple suggests typing to Siri or pressing a button to get its attention.
When should I suspect a microphone problem?
Consider a microphone issue only after checking mute state, placement, noise, and audio evidence. A microphone becomes a more plausible cause if the assistant repeatedly fails to capture speech clearly in quiet conditions or if an SDK transcript shows noisy or distorted input.
Before purchasing anything, test the built-in microphone in a quiet room, speak toward it, and compare results from a closer position. Google’s recommendations for a good-quality, well-positioned microphone are aimed at Assistant SDK audio, so they do not establish that an external microphone will fix a consumer device’s recognition problem.

Can I use voice history to troubleshoot without changing privacy settings?
History can help identify whether the assistant captured the wrong words, but recording and activity controls differ by platform. Google describes accidental activation and provides activity review and deletion controls; Amazon’s Alexa History can expose the audio and transcript that were streamed to the cloud.
Review the platform’s current privacy controls before changing history or recording settings. Use only the diagnostic information you need, and do not assume that one assistant’s history or deletion behavior applies to another.
How should I run a clean retest?
A controlled retest helps show whether a particular change fixed the problem. Change one variable at a time so that a different result has a plausible explanation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Choose a simple command you can recognize in the transcript or result.
- Test it once in a quiet environment, with the microphone unmuted and the device connected.
- Note whether the assistant activated, what words it captured if a transcript is available, and whether it completed the request.
- Change one factor—such as language, device placement, or network conditions—and repeat the same command.
- If activation works and the transcript is accurate but the action fails, stop adjusting capture conditions and check support for the requested capability.
This sequence helps avoid replacing equipment or repeatedly retraining voice recognition when the actual failure is unsupported functionality, language availability, or connectivity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a voice assistant mishear me even when the transcript looks correct?
Yes. A transcript can reflect the words captured while the assistant still interprets the intended meaning incorrectly. If the wording is accurate, simplify the request and check whether the requested action is supported.
Does changing a Google Home hotword setting affect everyone in the household?
Google says the hotword-sensitivity change is device-level, so it applies to people using that device. Availability is limited to most speakers and displays and only some languages.
Can I trust a voice assistant transcript as an exact recording of what I said?
Not always. OpenAI cautions that ChatGPT Voice transcripts may differ from the conversation, especially with overlapping speech, background noise, or rapid conversation.
Why does an Echo support my language but still lack a skill or music option?
Amazon warns that language support does not guarantee access to every Echo capability, skill, music option, or content type. Availability can differ by language, so check support for the particular feature.
