To transfer data to a Pixel 10a, use the on-screen copy process during setup and choose your old Android phone or iPhone as the source. Google supports wireless and cable-assisted transfers on Pixel 10 and later. You can also add data after setup with Android Switch. What moves depends on the source phone: in particular, iPhone device copy includes photos stored locally, not photos held only in iCloud.
Before you start the transfer
Prepare both phones before opening Pixel setup. Google recommends backing up the old device first. Keep both phones charged, switched on, close together, and connected to reliable Wi-Fi. Have the old phone’s screen-lock code ready. A USB-C data cable is optional, but can help if Wi-Fi is weak or you prefer a wired connection.
- If you use Google Messages on Android, update it on the old phone and make it the default messaging app before transferring.
- If moving from iPhone, enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, know the iPhone passcode, update iOS, and turn off iMessage and FaceTime before switching.
- For WhatsApp or another third-party app, back up its chats within that app and follow its own migration steps.
Transfer from an Android phone
- Turn on the Pixel 10a and begin setup. Choose the option to copy apps and data from an Android or Pixel phone when prompted.
- Follow the Pixel’s pairing instructions. If prompted, use the setup notification or QR-code flow to connect the old phone, then enter the old phone’s screen-lock code.
- Choose the items to copy and follow the instructions shown on both phones until the process finishes.
Google’s Android-to-Pixel guidance lists contacts, photos and videos, and apps downloaded or purchased through Google Play among the transferable categories. Data from apps made specifically for another phone manufacturer may not transfer. App data, logins, and in-app content are not guaranteed to move with the app itself.
Transfer from an iPhone
- On the iPhone, switch off iMessage and FaceTime before starting. Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, and have the iPhone passcode ready.
- During Pixel 10a setup, select iPhone as the source and follow the pairing and copy prompts on the Pixel and iPhone.
- Use the wireless option, a cable, or the combination offered by the setup flow. Keep the phones close and follow the on-screen steps until copying is complete.
Device copy transfers only photos stored locally on the iPhone. Photos held only in iCloud need a separate route: Google points users to Google Photos sync or Apple’s iCloud migration tool. iPhone apps do not necessarily become usable Android apps on the Pixel; download Android versions from Google Play where available and sign in to each service as needed.

Choose wireless or cable-assisted transfer
Pixel 10 and later support wireless transfer and cable-assisted transfer. Wireless avoids needing a cable, while a cable is useful if the Wi-Fi connection is unreliable or you prefer to connect the phones directly. A cable is not a universal requirement.
| Connection | What to know |
|---|---|
| Wireless | Keep the phones close, with Wi-Fi enabled; Bluetooth is also needed for the iPhone flow. Transfer options can vary by source phone and software. |
| USB cable | Use a USB-C to USB-C cable that supports data if the connectors fit both phones. Newer iPhones and Android phones can use USB-C to USB-C; iPhone X or older may require a Lightning-to-USB-C cable or the relevant Quick Switch Adapter setup. |
Check that your cable supports data rather than charging only. Google recommends having a USB-C cable available when Wi-Fi is not strong; most users do not need to buy an adapter in advance.

What transfers—and what may need separate attention
| Item | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Contacts | Contacts included in the source-device copy may transfer. Contacts already saved to your Google Account appear on the Pixel after you sign in to that account. |
| Photos and videos | Android transfer can include photos and videos. From iPhone, device copy includes locally stored photos; iCloud-only images require Google Photos sync or Apple’s iCloud migration tool. |
| Apps | Android apps downloaded or purchased through Google Play can be included. On iPhone, install compatible Android versions from Google Play where available. |
| App data and accounts | Not guaranteed. Support depends on the app and transfer method; you may need to sign in again or use an app’s own backup and restore process. |
| Manufacturer-specific data | Some data in apps specific to another phone maker may not transfer. |
Available categories can vary with the source phone model, operating-system version, and app. If Pixel storage fills during copying, the transfer may pause; free space on the Pixel and continue when prompted.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you skipped setup or no longer have the old phone
Add data after setup
Pixel 10a is covered by Google’s Pixel 9 and later guidance for adding data after setup. Open Settings, find and open Android Switch, and follow the prompts to transfer from an available device or cloud backup. If an earlier transfer was interrupted, Android Switch can also be used to continue later.

Restore without the old phone
During setup, connect the Pixel to a network, sign in to the Google Account that holds the backup, and follow the restore prompts. After setup, use Settings > Android Switch and choose an available cloud backup. This restores only data present in an eligible backup; it is not a guaranteed complete copy. Contacts already associated with the Google Account appear after sign-in.
