To test a REST API with Postman, send a request that matches the scenario you want to check, inspect the response, and add assertions for the endpoint’s expected status, data, headers, or timing. Save related requests in a collection so you can run the checks together, then use environments and an appropriate run method to repeat them.

1. Create and send a request

Start with the API’s documentation or contract: you need the endpoint, the HTTP method, any required inputs, and the expected response. In Postman, create a request, choose its method, and enter the endpoint URL. Add any required query parameters, authorization, headers, and request body before sending it.

Use the request configuration that matches the API operation. Query parameters belong in the URL’s query component; headers carry request metadata such as content type; a body supplies data when the operation requires it; and authorization must match the API’s authentication scheme. Do not assume that every request needs all of these components.

Click Send. Postman displays the response so you can inspect its status, body, headers, cookies, and response time. For request setup and response inspection, see Postman’s request guide.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Inspect the response before writing tests

First confirm that you sent the intended request: the endpoint, method, inputs, and authentication should represent the case you mean to test. Then compare the response with the API’s documented behavior. An HTTP exchange can succeed while returning the wrong resource or business result, so a successful status by itself is not proof that the endpoint is correct.

  • Check whether the status is appropriate for this operation and scenario.
  • Read the response body and confirm its structure and relevant values.
  • Check response headers or cookies when the contract requires them.
  • Consider response time only when the endpoint has a meaningful timing expectation.

Expected values depend on the endpoint’s contract. A status of 200 or a particular JSON field is not universally correct for every API.

3. Add a post-response test

In the request’s Scripts > Post-response tab, write JavaScript checks using pm.test. Postman runs these tests after it receives a response, and the results appear in Test Results. Its quick-start example checks for status 200; use the status your endpoint is actually expected to return.

pm.test("Status code is expected", function () {
  pm.response.to.have.status(200);
});

This assertion checks one protocol-level expectation. It does not establish that the response body contains the right data. Postman’s test scripting guide describes post-response scripts, test scopes, and results.

4. Assert the response details that matter

Choose checks from the API contract rather than adding assertions for every available response property. A useful test suite covers the conditions that would make this endpoint wrong for its caller.

Expectation type What to verify Example consideration
Protocol Status and required headers Check the status expected for this operation and any header required by the contract.
Payload Body structure, values, or types For JSON, parse the response and assert properties relevant to the result.
Cookies Required cookie presence or value Check only when cookies are part of the endpoint’s expected behavior.
Timing Response time against an applicable expectation Use a threshold only when the API has a defined timing requirement.

For example, this checks a JSON property using Postman’s pm.response.json() and pm.expect pattern:

pm.test("Response contains expected name", () => {
  const body = pm.response.json();
  pm.expect(body.name).to.eql("Jane");
});

The expected name here is illustrative; replace it with a value and property specified by the endpoint contract. Postman’s assertion examples cover status, body, headers, cookies, and response-time checks.

5. Save and organize requests in a collection

Save the request to a collection after it is configured. A collection keeps related calls together so they can be reused and run as a group. Put endpoint-specific checks on the request; add a collection- or folder-level script only when the same check genuinely applies to every request in that scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Postman runs collection scripts before folder scripts and request scripts. Keep shared checks broad enough to apply consistently, and keep behavior unique to an endpoint in its own request script. Otherwise, a shared assertion can make unrelated requests fail or obscure which endpoint-specific expectation was violated.

6. Test an ordered workflow and reuse configuration

When the behavior spans more than one call, run requests in sequence and pass a value from one response into a later request. For example, a workflow can create a resource and then retrieve it, using the created resource’s identifier in the follow-up call. This tests a relationship between operations rather than treating each request as an isolated example.

Use an environment to group variables for a configuration, such as a base URL, and select the appropriate environment when running the collection. This lets a request set reuse configuration across contexts. Keep credentials and other sensitive values out of examples and shared artifacts; avoid embedding secrets in request bodies, scripts, or collection material that others may access.

Postman’s end-to-end testing guide explains collections, data passed between calls, and environments.

7. Choose how to repeat or automate the checks

Manual collection runs are useful while developing because you can inspect requests and results interactively. For ongoing checks, choose a run method based on who or what should trigger it and what feedback the team needs.

Run method Trigger Useful for Feedback loop
Manual collection run A person starts the run Developing and debugging a request workflow Interactive results in Postman
Scheduled run A configured schedule Recurring checks without a person starting each run Results from each scheduled execution
Postman CLI in CI/CD A pipeline run Running collection checks as part of an automated delivery workflow Automated run results in the pipeline context
Monitor A configured monitoring run Recurring API health checks Recurring monitoring results
Webhook-triggered run A webhook event Starting a run in response to an event Automated results associated with the triggered run
Performance test A configured performance run Investigating performance under the chosen test conditions Performance-oriented results

A functional assertion suite and a performance test answer different questions: assertions check whether responses match expected behavior, while performance testing examines behavior under its configured performance conditions. Postman documents collection run options; no one run mode is best for every team.

A repeatable Postman API test checklist

  1. Use the API contract to choose the endpoint, method, inputs, authentication, and expected behavior.
  2. Send the request and inspect the response manually for the intended scenario.
  3. Add post-response assertions for relevant status, payload, headers, cookies, or timing expectations.
  4. Save related requests to a collection and keep shared scripts limited to checks that apply consistently.
  5. Use an environment for reusable configuration and pass response data between requests when testing a workflow.
  6. Run the collection manually during development, then choose scheduled, pipeline, monitoring, webhook, or performance execution to fit the operational goal.
