You can move the useful parts of a ChatGPT workflow, but no single export recreates everything automatically. Treat the move as two transfers: an archive of conversations and account data, plus a reviewed profile containing your preferences, instructions, projects and decisions. Request the ChatGPT export first, create the profile separately, use the destination’s documented importer, move files by hand where required, and test the new setup before cancelling the old account.
What actually transfers—and what does not
“My AI knows how I work” usually describes several different assets that live in different places:
- Conversation history: the text of past chats and associated account data.
- Memory: durable facts and preferences the assistant has saved or inferred for future conversations.
- Custom instructions and project instructions: rules about tone, role, formatting, context and working methods.
- Project files: documents, spreadsheets, images and other uploads.
- Generated media: images or files created inside the old assistant.
- Operational knowledge: decisions, open questions, recurring tasks and tool procedures that may be scattered across many chats.
An export is an archive, not a universal restore point. ChatGPT can provide a ZIP containing chat history and other account data, but each destination decides what it can parse. Gemini documents a ZIP route for chat history and a separate text-based memory import. Claude’s documented route imports text into memory rather than rebuilding a ChatGPT archive. Project files and generated media may need separate copying even when chat text transfers.
Prepare a migration inventory before exporting
Make a short inventory while the old account is still available. This prevents an important instruction or file from being buried in thousands of archived conversations.

Record durable preferences
- Preferred answer length, tone, spelling convention and formatting.
- Technical background and the level at which explanations should start.
- Rules such as “ask before making assumptions,” citation preferences or code-style requirements.
- Topics, personal details or business information that you explicitly want remembered—and items that must not be retained.
List active work
For every ongoing project, note its objective, current status, important decisions, constraints, next action, relevant people and source files. Include recurring workflows such as weekly reports, coding tasks, study plans or content production. A concise status sheet is more useful to a new assistant than an unfiltered archive.
Separate sensitive material
Mark credentials, client data, health information, financial records and confidential documents. Do not place secrets in a profile simply because they appeared in old chats. The export can contain sensitive account information, so plan secure storage before downloading it.
Request and secure your ChatGPT export
OpenAI documents self-service exports for signed-in Free, Go, Plus and Pro users. The current consumer path is:

- Open the profile menu in ChatGPT.
- Select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Choose Export data.
- Select Export, then confirm the request.
OpenAI says delivery by email or SMS can take up to seven days. When it arrives, the download link expires after 24 hours and must be opened while signed in to the account that requested it. Start this step early; waiting until the day you cancel a subscription can leave you without the archive.
Handle the ZIP as confidential data
Download it to encrypted storage, restrict access and keep an additional copy only if your security policy allows it. Avoid uploading the archive to an unknown “converter” or migration service. Inspect the contents locally so you understand which files are present and which are not. Deleted conversations cannot be restored by requesting an export.
The ZIP is not guaranteed to be directly importable by every assistant. Preserve it as your source archive, then follow the destination’s own import format and limits.

Create a portable profile instead of relying on raw history
A portable profile is a human-reviewed text document that gives the new assistant the context it actually needs. Ask ChatGPT to draft one, then edit it yourself before sharing it. Request sections such as:
- Response preferences and standing instructions.
- Durable facts you approve for retention.
- Current projects with status, decisions, constraints and next steps.
- Tools, software, terminology and workflows you use.
- Open questions and deadlines.
- Information to avoid storing or repeating.
Use explicit labels and dates. For example, write “Project Atlas — status as of 14 October 2026: prototype complete; security review pending” rather than “Atlas is nearly done.” Delete guesses, outdated facts and private material you do not want to disclose to the destination provider. Keep the final profile in a normal text format so it can be pasted into an import form or a new conversation.
Memory import is not the same as copying custom instructions. After importing, check both the assistant’s memory controls and any separate instruction or project settings. A destination may retain only selected entries, even when the text you supplied was longer.
Choose the destination’s supported migration route

Availability can vary by account, region, rollout and workspace policy. Use the labels shown in your current settings page and the provider’s help documentation rather than assuming every account has the same importer.
Import into Gemini without losing project context
Import memory
- Ask ChatGPT for the reviewed, structured profile described above.
- Copy only the approved text.
- Open Gemini’s memory import option and paste the summary when prompted.
- Review the memory entries Gemini creates; correct, remove or add items as needed.
Import chat history
- Open Gemini settings and choose the chat-history import option.
- Select the ChatGPT ZIP you downloaded.
- Keep the upload under Google’s documented 5 GB limit and within the limit of five ZIP uploads per day.
- Allow up to a day for processing before judging the result.
- Search several known conversations after processing and confirm that imported chats appear where Google indicates they will.
Imported chats are not necessarily identical to ordinary native Gemini conversations. Treat them as a reference collection and check the deletion behavior shown in Gemini. If the same ZIP is uploaded again, Google says the system adds new conversations and overwrites previously imported ones; do not retry casually when troubleshooting.

Move excluded assets separately
Google says project files and generated images or files from the previous assistant do not transfer through this importer. Recreate the project structure in Gemini, upload the source documents again and paste the project instructions from your profile. Keep an external folder with canonical originals so a later re-import does not depend on an assistant’s generated copy.

Import a profile into Claude cautiously
- Prepare the edited memory text, omitting secrets and obsolete details.
- Open Claude’s memory import flow and paste the text it requests.
- Let Claude extract memory entries.
- Review each retained entry and remove anything inaccurate or too sensitive.
- Recreate important project instructions and upload current files in the relevant project or conversation.
Anthropic describes this memory import as experimental. It does not establish a full ChatGPT ZIP migration, and it may not retain every item. The documented focus is work-related context, so unrelated personal details may be omitted. Keep the original profile and archive until you have confirmed that the information you need is present.
Use a second ChatGPT account as a reference, not a merge
OpenAI’s account-transfer guidance allows exporting conversations and uploading the file into a new conversation as reference material. This can make old decisions searchable in the new account, but it does not merge accounts or rebuild the old account’s chat list. You will still need to set up instructions, memory and active projects in the destination account.
If you are deciding which account to keep, review active Plus or Pro subscriptions before changing anything. Do not delete the old account merely because the export finished; cancellation, retention and account ownership are separate decisions.
Verify the new workflow before cancelling the old one
Run a deliberate acceptance test rather than asking whether the import “worked.”
- Memory check: ask the new assistant to list the preferences and durable facts it retained. Remove errors.
- Project check: ask for the status, constraints and next action of several active projects. Compare the answers with your inventory.
- History check: search for multiple important conversations by distinctive terms, dates or decisions.
- File check: open representative documents and confirm that required attachments, versions and permissions are available.
- Workflow check: perform real daily tasks—such as drafting a report, reviewing code or continuing a plan—and inspect formatting, context and citations.
- Recovery check: confirm that you still have the original ZIP, profile and project files in secure storage.
Keep the old account accessible until these checks pass. If a critical item is missing, copy it manually into a new project or conversation instead of assuming a second import will repair it.
Workspace and account eligibility
Personal-account instructions may not apply to managed environments. OpenAI documents that Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces should route export requests to the workspace owner. Edu exports may depend on administrator enablement. Organization retention, access and security policies continue to govern managed data, even when a user wants to move to another provider.

Before exporting workplace material, confirm that your employer or client permits the transfer. A personal destination may not be an approved location for confidential data. If the workspace owner must perform the export, ask for the permitted format and retention period rather than bypassing administrative controls.

Privacy, memory and subscription pitfalls
Do not confuse model-improvement settings with memory
OpenAI documents model-improvement controls separately from saved chats and memory. Turning off model improvement does not delete saved conversations. Review each control independently and do not treat an export request as a deletion request.
Do not expose the archive unnecessarily
The ZIP may include account information beyond the conversations you remember creating. Store it securely, limit who can open it and remove temporary copies from shared machines. A USB drive can be an optional offline copy, but it is not required; if you use one, encrypt it and protect it like any other sensitive archive.
Do not cancel billing before verification
Confirm that the destination import, files, memory and representative workflows are usable first. Then review active subscriptions and decide which account to retain. Routine switching does not require deleting the old account.

The export email has not arrived
Allow the documented window of up to seven days, check the account’s email or SMS destination and ensure you can sign in to the requesting account. If the link arrives after you are ready, open it within 24 hours because it expires.

Check the destination’s size and file rules. For Gemini, remain below 5 GB and the daily limit of five ZIP uploads. Do not repeatedly upload the same file: a re-upload can add duplicates and overwrite prior imported conversations. Preserve the ZIP and use the provider’s support route if the documented limits are satisfied.

Memory looks incomplete
Compare the destination’s entries with your reviewed profile, not with every sentence in the old archive. Add missing high-value instructions manually, remove incorrect entries and keep project state in a dated document that you can refresh.
Files or generated images are missing
This is expected for Gemini’s documented exclusions. Locate the original files outside the assistant, verify their versions and upload them to the destination project. Recreate captions, prompts or usage notes from your inventory.
Old chats appear but cannot continue naturally
An imported archive may be searchable reference material rather than native, editable conversations. Start a new thread with the relevant excerpt, decision and current goal. This creates a clean working context without pretending that the old thread was fully reconstructed.

- Request the ChatGPT export while you still have access.
- Download the ZIP within the 24-hour link window and secure it.
- Draft, edit and date a portable profile.
- Check destination eligibility, limits and supported import types.
- Import memory separately from conversation history.
- Move excluded files, project instructions and generated assets manually.
- Search important chats and test real workflows.
- Review workspace permissions and active subscriptions.
- Keep the old account until the new setup is proven; then decide whether to cancel or retain it.
The practical decision rule
Choose the destination based on the amount of manual work you can accept. If searchable chat history matters most and your account exposes the feature, Gemini’s ZIP route is the most direct documented option, subject to its size, upload and exclusion rules. If a carefully curated work profile is the priority, Claude’s text-based memory flow can help, but its experimental nature requires review. If you are moving between ChatGPT accounts, use the export as reference and plan to rebuild the destination’s normal organization rather than expecting a merge.
The reliable handoff is therefore staged: archive what can be archived, summarize what should persist, recreate files and projects explicitly, verify with real tasks and only then change billing or access. That approach preserves the workflow—not just a pile of old transcripts.
