To switch accounts on Instagram, open your profile, tap your username or profile name at the top, and select an account already added to the switcher. If the account is missing, choose Add account and log in first. Meta’s Help Center says Instagram supports up to five added accounts without repeated logouts.
Instagram account switching is useful for personal, professional, creator, hobby, client, and brand accounts. Switching changes the active account; it does not merge profiles, transfer followers, combine messages, or delete the account you leave.
Key takeaways
- Instagram’s account switcher lets you move between up to five added Instagram accounts without logging out each time, according to Meta’s current Help Center guidance.
- On the Instagram mobile app, open your profile, tap the username or profile name at the top, and select the account you want to use.
- On Instagram.com, click Switch next to the profile picture in the top-right area, then choose an account or log in to another one.
- Accounts Center is not ordinarily required just to switch between Instagram accounts; Accounts Center manages connected Meta accounts, settings, and experiences.
- Always confirm the active username and profile picture before posting, commenting, messaging, or replying to a Story.
What does switching accounts on Instagram mean?
Switching accounts means moving between Instagram profiles that are available in the same app or browser session. The active account controls where new posts, Stories, Reels, comments, likes, and direct messages originate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSwitching does not merge the accounts or transfer followers, posts, messages, usernames, account types, or ownership. Switching also does not delete the account you leave. The other account simply becomes inactive until you select it again.

How do you switch accounts on the Instagram mobile app?
To switch accounts on Instagram on an iPhone, Android phone, or a comparable mobile app, use the profile switcher:
- Open Instagram.
- Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap the current username or profile name at the top of the profile screen.
- Select the Instagram account you want to use.
- Wait for the username, profile picture, feed, and profile content to update before taking an action.
Instagram may display Add Instagram account, Add account, or a similar label. Instagram’s wording and layout can differ by iPhone, Android, Instagram Lite, iPad, mobile browser, language, and staged app rollout. The stable idea is to open the profile area and use the current username or account switcher.
Some Instagram app versions also offer a shortcut such as pressing and holding the profile picture or using the account avatar in the profile area. That shortcut is version-dependent, so use the profile-name method if the shortcut does not appear.
How can you confirm which Instagram account is active?
Check the username at the top of the profile screen and the profile picture before publishing anything. For an additional check, open the profile grid and confirm that the posts belong to the intended account.
Before posting or replying, also check the account name shown in the composer when Instagram displays it. Before cross-posting, verify the selected Facebook Page or other business destination. These checks help prevent a personal photo, brand comment, client message, or Story reply from being sent from the wrong account.
How do you add an existing Instagram account?
To add an existing Instagram account to the switcher, open your profile and complete the existing-account login flow:

- Complete any two-factor authentication prompt, security check, or unrecognized-device review.
- Return to the profile switcher and select the newly added account.
Meta’s Help Center currently says Instagram users can add up to five accounts for switching. The five-account figure refers to accounts added for access and switching; it does not mean a person can create only five Instagram identities in total.

Adding an existing account is different from creating a new profile. Choose the existing-account login option when the second account already has its own username, followers, messages, content, recovery details, or business ownership.
How do you switch accounts on Instagram.com?
Instagram’s documented desktop route uses a Switch control beside the profile picture:
- Open Instagram.com and log in.
- Look in the top-right area beside the profile picture.
- Click Switch.
- Select an account that is already available, or enter the username and password for an account that is not yet added.
- Click Log in if Instagram requests credentials.
The desktop website does not always display the same switcher as the mobile app. Browser cookies and site data help Instagram remember available sessions. Private-browsing windows, cleared cookies, browser resets, ad blockers, and workplace security policies can prevent an account from remaining in the list.

If an account disappears from Instagram.com, log in again through Switch rather than assuming the account has been deleted. Avoid saving another person’s credentials in a browser used by a wider team.
How do you create another Instagram account or profile?
Instagram’s creation flow can offer a new profile connected to an existing setup, while the login flow is for an account that already exists. The labels can be confusing, so identify the action before continuing.
Create a new profile through Instagram
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap Add Instagram account.
- Tap Create new account.
- Enter a profile name.
- Continue through the sign-up screens.
- Add an email address or phone number.
- Complete sign-up.
Meta’s current flow may let you add the new profile to Accounts Center or create a separate password instead. Read the choice carefully: a connected profile and a separately credentialed account can have different login and recovery arrangements.
Log in to a completely separate existing account
Choose Log in to existing account when the second Instagram identity already exists. A separate account may have independent credentials, recovery information, followers, content, messages, and ownership. Do not choose a creation option merely because Instagram calls the destination a “profile” in one screen.
Instagram’s use of “account” and “profile” can vary across screens. Before confirming, check whether Instagram is asking for credentials to an existing account or asking you to choose a new username and complete sign-up.

What is the difference between Instagram’s account switcher and Accounts Center?
The Instagram account switcher is primarily for moving between Instagram accounts available in an app or browser. Meta Accounts Center is a separate management area for connected Facebook, Instagram, and Meta accounts, with WhatsApp availability depending on location.
| Feature | Instagram account switcher | Meta Accounts Center |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Move between Instagram accounts available on a device or browser | Manage connected Meta accounts and cross-app experiences |
| Needed for ordinary Instagram switching? | Yes; this is the relevant feature | No, not necessarily |
| Can include Facebook? | No; it focuses on Instagram account access | Yes, where the account setup supports it |
| Can affect cross-app login? | Not by itself | Yes, when connected-login features are enabled |
| Privacy and account-separation effect | Saved account access remains available on the device or browser | Connected accounts may share certain login and settings experiences |
| Best use | Fast personal, professional, creator, or brand switching | Deliberate Facebook–Instagram connection and centralized settings |
Accounts Center can support connected experiences such as logging in to one Meta service with information from another, managing some settings in one place, connecting Facebook and Instagram, cross-posting where available, and coordinating certain advertising and account preferences. Meta describes these capabilities in its Accounts Center Help Center information and its explanation of centralized account settings.
Adding multiple accounts to the same Accounts Center is optional for ordinary Instagram switching. Meta says accounts can remain in separate Accounts Centers. Do not assume that every account in the same Accounts Center automatically appears in the local Instagram switcher; the two mechanisms are related but not identical, and behavior can vary by account setup and app version.

Why does switching Instagram accounts matter?
Switching accounts matters because Instagram actions always belong to the account that is active at the moment of the action.
- It reduces wrong-account posts. A profile check can stop a personal post from appearing on a business account or a client comment from coming from a creator’s personal identity.
- It saves time. A user can move between added accounts without repeatedly logging out and authenticating.
- It separates audiences. Personal, professional, hobby, niche, and brand identities can retain separate feeds, followers, posts, and messages.
- It supports work-life boundaries. Leaving a work account by switching to a personal account does not delete the work account or its login.
- It makes ownership easier to audit. Each account can retain its own recovery email, phone number, password, and two-factor authentication settings.
- It improves team hygiene. A shared business login should not automatically expose a manager’s personal account on a shared device.
Instagram’s original account-switching announcement described the feature as useful for people using different accounts for different interests, audiences, and parts of their identity. The original Instagram announcement provides that historical product context.
Should you use only the account switcher or also Accounts Center?
Use only the Instagram account switcher when you manage several Instagram accounts on a private device and want those accounts to remain operationally separate. This approach is simple, but you still need each account’s credentials and recovery methods, and clearing app data or browser cookies can remove the remembered access.
Consider Accounts Center when you deliberately want connected Facebook–Instagram login, centralized settings, cross-posting, or other connected Meta experiences. Connected login can be convenient, but it makes it more important to audit which accounts and devices can access one another.

How do you remove an Instagram account from a device?
Removing an account from a device is different from switching away, logging out, removing it from Accounts Center, or deleting the Instagram account.
| Action | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Switch away | Makes another account active | Does not remove the account from the switcher |
| Log out | Ends the current session | May not remove saved login information or connected account relationships |
| Remove saved login or remove account from this device | Removes the shortcut or stored access from that device | Does not delete the Instagram account |
| Remove from Accounts Center | Changes the account’s Meta connection | Does not delete the Instagram account |
| Delete the Instagram account | Starts an account-deletion process with consequences for the account | Is not a routine way to remove a login from a phone |
To remove saved access, look in the account switcher or login screen for Log out, Remove account from this device, Saved login, or equivalent wording. Instagram labels vary by device and app version. Read the confirmation screen so you remove only the local login information you intend to remove.
How do you remove an account from Accounts Center?
To remove an account from Meta Accounts Center, open Accounts Center → Accounts, select the profile, and choose Remove account. Meta documents this route in its Accounts Center account-removal instructions.
Removing an account from Accounts Center changes the connected-account arrangement. It is not the same as deleting the Instagram account, and it is not necessarily the same as removing saved login information from a phone or browser.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do if Instagram account switching is not working?
The second account does not appear
- Return to the profile switcher and confirm that the login completed successfully.
- Check whether you added the account to Instagram’s switcher rather than only adding it to Accounts Center.
- Confirm that the app is using the intended Instagram account when you add the second account.
- Update Instagram through the device’s official app store.
- If you are using Instagram.com, leave private browsing and check whether cookies or site data were cleared.
- Check whether the device or session has reached Meta’s documented five-account limit.
If the account was created through a linked Meta login and does not have a separate password, do not repeatedly guess passwords. Use Instagram’s password-recovery flow or the appropriate linked-login option.
You cannot log in to the second account
Common causes include a wrong username, email address, phone number, or password; a password belonging to a different account; a required two-factor authentication code; different recovery information; a linked-profile setup without a separate password; or a security challenge for an unfamiliar device.
Use Instagram’s official password-reset and account-security flows. Never send an Instagram password, two-factor code, or recovery code to another person, and avoid third-party “account recovery” services.
The wrong account keeps posting
Stop before publishing and confirm the profile picture, username, profile grid, and account name in the composer. For business workflows, verify the selected Facebook Page or other cross-posting destination. If the wrong-account risk is high, remove unnecessary saved logins from shared devices and keep personal and organization accounts on separate access arrangements.

The app or browser does not remember an account
Cleared app data, deleted browser cookies, private browsing, device changes, security policies, or a completed logout can remove remembered account access. Add the account again through the profile switcher and complete any security verification. Remembered access is a convenience feature, not proof that an account has been merged or deleted.
An unexpected account appears on a shared device
Do not open or use an account that belongs to someone else. Log out or remove the saved login according to the screen’s available option, then review the device’s stored accounts and security settings. The account owner should review recent sessions through Accounts Center → Password and security → Where you’re logged in. Some accounts may show a separate Login activity path. Instagram documents device review and logout in its recent-login activity guidance.
Security checklist for multiple Instagram accounts
- Use a unique password for each Instagram account.
- Enable two-factor authentication on each account, not just the account used most often.
- Check the recovery email address and phone number for every account.
- Review Accounts Center membership and connected-login settings.
- Review Where you’re logged in or Login activity and sign out unknown devices.
- Do not save personal credentials on a phone or browser routinely used by coworkers.
- Do not share passwords or security codes for a shared business account.
- Use separate, named access through Meta’s business-management tools where available instead of sharing one password.
- Confirm the active username immediately before posting, messaging, commenting, or cross-posting.
Switching accounts is convenient, but convenience can increase exposure on a shared device or when connected login is enabled. Treat the switcher as an access shortcut, not as a security boundary.

Can I have more than two Instagram accounts?
Yes. Instagram supports switching among multiple added accounts, and Meta’s current Help Center says users can add up to five accounts for switching. The five-account limit concerns accounts added for access on the app or browser, not the total number of Instagram identities a person may create overall.
Do I need Accounts Center to switch between Instagram accounts?
No. Ordinary Instagram switching uses the profile account switcher, while Accounts Center manages connected Facebook, Instagram, and Meta accounts and related experiences. Accounts Center membership is optional for basic Instagram switching, although account behavior can vary by setup and app version.
Will switching Instagram accounts merge the accounts?
No. Switching Instagram accounts does not merge followers, posts, messages, usernames, ownership, or account types. The selected account simply becomes the active account for new posts, Stories, Reels, comments, likes, and direct messages.
Can I switch Instagram accounts on a computer?
Yes. On Instagram.com, log in, click Switch next to the profile picture in the top-right area, and select an added account. If the account is not listed, enter its credentials and log in. Browser cookies, private browsing, and cleared site data can affect remembered accounts.

How do I remove one Instagram account without deleting it?
Log out or remove the saved login from the device or browser using the available option such as Remove account from this device or Saved login. Removing saved access is not the same as deleting the Instagram account. Removing an account from Accounts Center is a separate action that changes connected Meta-account settings.
The Bottom Line
Use Instagram’s profile switcher for routine movement between accounts: open your profile, tap the username, and choose the account. Add an existing account through Add account → Log in to existing account, and remember that Meta currently documents a limit of five added accounts. Keep Accounts Center separate unless you deliberately want connected Meta experiences, and verify the active username before every important action.
